Herbs to Avoid while on Birth Control or Hormone Replacement

Disclaimer: I am not a professional herbalist or physician. Always consult with your private physician when considering herbal supplements.  If your doctor recommends you take any of these herbs, do not discontinue use.  If you are concerned, speak with your doctor about the possible side effects and use additional birth control measures. Once again, this is not professional advice.  I am simply sharing what I have learned in my own research.

I have seen a lot of excellent posts out there with people recommending natural herbal remedies for a whole host of maladies.  While I am a firm believer in holistic medicine, herbal supplements can have some serious side effects.  One that I think is incredibly important to learn is the interaction of some herbs with hormonal therapies such as birth control and hormone replacement. 

Here is a short and incomplete list of popular herbal supplements that can interact negatively with hormonal prescriptions (Feel free to add more):

St. John’s Wort recorded cases of unintended pregnancies when taken with birth control

Fenugreek blocks the absorption of medications, including birth control

Black Cohosh creates hormonal interaction with birth control and hormone replacement therapy

Blue Cohosh while I didn’t find anything specifically about interactions with birth control, it appears to cause uterine contractions and was used to induce labor, or abort early pregnancies.  Because of it’s effects on the reproductive system, it may be unwise to take concurrently with any hormonal prescription.

Fennel may decrease effectiveness of hormonal birth control and estrogen therapies

Hops may interact negatively with hormonal birth control 

Licorice taken medicinally, affects reproductive hormones, steer clear if on birth control or hormone replacement therapy

Soy while not an herb, can imitate estrogen, thus interfering with hormonal medications 

Red Clover may decrease effectiveness of birth control and hormone replacement therapy

Scatter some sugar to purify a room.

Throw rice into the air to make rain.

Carry a potato in your pocket or purse all winter to ward against colds.

Eat five almonds before consuming alcohol, to lighten the effects of intoxication.

Place a pine branch above your bed to keep illness away.

Chew celery seeds to help you concentrate.

Carry of chunk of dry pineapple in a bag to draw luck to you.

Ask an orange a yes or no question before you eat it, then count the seeds: if the seeds are an even number, the answer is no. If an odd number, yes.

Eat olives to ensure fertility.

Toss Oats out your back door to ensure that your garden or crop will be bountiful.

Eat mustard seed to ensure fertility.

Place Lilacs around your house to rid yourself of unwanted spirits.

Eat Lettuce to drive lustful thoughts from your mind.

Rub a Lettuce leaf over your forehead to help you sleep.

Add Lemon juice to your bathwater for purification.

Eat grapes to increase psychic powers.

Things I’ve Learned

As both a witch and someone who makes more mistakes than there are cells in my body

just do what works

like i’m serious if screaming at the moon works then do it

listen to your gut. it knows

work with what you have and don’t be afraid to cheat the system a little

eat after you preform magickal works, drink water

succulents are friends

spider plants can live just about anywhere but actual pots are best

rosemary doesn’t like water and will die very quickly if you over water it

aloe vera is a beast and flat out refuses to die

be like aloe vera

eggshells don’t decompose like other things they just kinda dissolve eventually

freezing eggshells keeps them fresh but they’re difficult to pry apart 

don’t use salt on plants they will die 

enchanting your makeup is a good idea

put sigils everywhere

don’t be afraid to do magick for practical/”mundane” things

always look at the mundane causes for things first

showers are a great time to self-cleanse and ward

screaming and throwing your grimoire at spiders is probably going to happen eventually

you should probably set up a schedule or an alarm to water your plants

store your seeds away from water 

dandelions are friends

don’t pick the first dandelions of spring! bees need those to get started

sometimes just asking for something to lend it’s energy is enough

sometimes doing spells is the equivalent of kicking the universe in the knees until it does the thing

cursing bad people with lots of supporters is very difficult, but worth it 

be very careful with your wording and intent

your spells probably aren’t going to work out the way you thought

Witchcraft.

Witchcraft finds the disgraced, the beaten, the neglected, the hurt, the lonely, the tormented, the abused, the sorrowful, the scarred, the mutilated, the abandoned, the oppressed and gives them a new home.

I’ve never met a witch in real life without their fair share of trauma.

Witchcraft gives back our lives. It gives back what other people have taken from us, and makes us whole again.

Imbolc Recipes

I just wanted to put together a series of posts with some recipes that I’m interested in. I’m not taking any credit for these–link is in the title of the recipe.

Lavender Bread

1-3 tablespoons lavender flowers

1 cup boiling water

1 package dry yeast

¼ cup warm water

1 tablespoon shortening

2 tablespoons white sugar

1 teaspoon salt

2 ½ cups bread flour

Steep lavender flowers in boiling water.  Let steep until almost cool.  Meanwhile, proof the yeast in warm water.  

In a large mixing bowl fit with the dough hook, place the shortening, sugar, salt and flour.  Strain the lavender infusion into the bowl while mixing at a slow speed.  Pour in the yeast and continue to blend.  If the dough seems too thin, add 2 tablespoons flour and mix well.  Remove dough hook, cover bread mix with a piece of wax paper and let sit for 45 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a small loaf pan.  Punch down dough, shape into loaf and place in pan.  

When dough has doubled in bulk, put into oven and bake for 30-40 min.  Bread is done when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.  Let cool on rack for 10 min.  Remove from pan and drizzle a little melted butter over it.  Serve warm.

Wondering how the word gypsy is a racial slur? Why are you referring to it as the G word when it literally means a free spirited traveller. What is so offensive about that?

Let me tell you a story, ignorant one. 

Once upon a time, there were a group of people migrating from northern India and Pakistan after the invasion “of the Persian Muslims who have since settled in Trukey, all of Europe, and the Americas These people are called the Rromani.” (x)

Once the pale bird feces people of Europe came into contact with the Rromani, they believed them to hail from Egypt, thus calling them Gypsies. 

Now about what disgusting white people like you have been trying to turn this racial slur into. There is nothing about being a free spirited traveller if you’re called such a word. What is up with white people romanticizing everything to make it seem all nice and rainbows for them?

“They were not nomadic by choice. They moved around because they had to… they were persecuted everywhere they went, and still are, to this day. They were persecuted alongside the Jews in the Holocaust – the Roma & Sinti”. They were forced to have this sort of nomadic lifestyle because “no country wanted them there”. (x)

Let’s not forget these lovely things Rromani people did and still go through because of who they are:

“Forced sterilization (yes, it is still happening)

Eviction

Harassment (by law enforcement as well as civilians)

Fingerprinting (this is happening in Italy right now – all Romani people are being fingerprinted, simply because our race is considered ‘criminal’)

Concentration camps

Starvation

Exclusion from public schools and welfare programs

Bombings (it is not uncommon in places like the Czech Republic for people to throw molotov cocktails into the windows of Romani homes)” (x)

“First and foremost: THE WORD “GYPSY” IS AN ETHNIC SLUR. It is a pejorative. It is an exonym that is hurtful and offensive. You need to accept this, period.

We are NOT your halloween costume. We are NOT your flowy skirt. We are NOT your fashion sense. We are NOT your wanderlust. We are NOT ‘boho.’

Gypsy is not fashion. Gypsy is not traveling. Gypsy is not a headband or a costume, or boho, or a long skirt.

Gypsy is a hurtful ethnic slur used to refer to the Romani people.

We cannot seem to emphasize this enough to people. This word is a slur. It was created to be a slur. Its meaning does not change. It will always be a slur. It will always be offensive.

‘The word is not yours. It’s ours. We can use it as we see fit. You cannot.’ - biggadjeworld 

We are a real people, with traditions, culture, and colorful heritage that spans centuries.” (x)

This is important! In America we are not used to hearing it as a slur, so it can be hard for us to realize it’s one if we don’t run into it or seek it out. Fly across the pond and say it you will get VERY different responses. If you want replacement words for free spirit and bohemian aesthetic, just use “free spirit” or “hippie” or even “flower child” honestly. Hippie Witch sounds more catchy anyway 🌻

Never appropriate someone’s culture for the sake of ‘aesthetic’!!! Learn the history of the words you use. Respect people. Say what you mean (and if you use these slurs, you MEAN to be racist, no two ways about it!). If “free spirited traveler” appeals to you there are suggestions above- other suggestions:
