Herbs to Avoid while on Birth Control or Hormone Replacement
Disclaimer: I am not a professional herbalist or physician. Always consult with your private physician when considering herbal supplements. Â If your doctor recommends you take any of these herbs, do not discontinue use. Â If you are concerned, speak with your doctor about the possible side effects and use additional birth control measures. Once again, this is not professional advice. Â I am simply sharing what I have learned in my own research.
I have seen a lot of excellent posts out there with people recommending natural herbal remedies for a whole host of maladies. Â While I am a firm believer in holistic medicine, herbal supplements can have some serious side effects. Â One that I think is incredibly important to learn is the interaction of some herbs with hormonal therapies such as birth control and hormone replacement.Â
Here is a short and incomplete list of popular herbal supplements that can interact negatively with hormonal prescriptions (Feel free to add more):
St. Johnâs Wort recorded cases of unintended pregnancies when taken with birth control
Fenugreek blocks the absorption of medications, including birth control
Black Cohosh creates hormonal interaction with birth control and hormone replacement therapy
Blue Cohosh while I didnât find anything specifically about interactions with birth control, it appears to cause uterine contractions and was used to induce labor, or abort early pregnancies. Â Because of itâs effects on the reproductive system, it may be unwise to take concurrently with any hormonal prescription.
Fennel may decrease effectiveness of hormonal birth control and estrogen therapies
Hops may interact negatively with hormonal birth controlÂ
Licorice taken medicinally, affects reproductive hormones, steer clear if on birth control or hormone replacement therapy
Soy while not an herb, can imitate estrogen, thus interfering with hormonal medicationsÂ
Red Clover may decrease effectiveness of birth control and hormone replacement therapy

Things Iâve Learned
As both a witch and someone who makes more mistakes than there are cells in my body
just do what works
like iâm serious if screaming at the moon works then do it
listen to your gut. it knows
work with what you have and donât be afraid to cheat the system a little
eat after you preform magickal works, drink water
succulents are friends
spider plants can live just about anywhere but actual pots are best
rosemary doesnât like water and will die very quickly if you over water it
aloe vera is a beast and flat out refuses to die
be like aloe vera
eggshells donât decompose like other things they just kinda dissolve eventually
freezing eggshells keeps them fresh but theyâre difficult to pry apartÂ
donât use salt on plants they will dieÂ
enchanting your makeup is a good idea
put sigils everywhere
donât be afraid to do magick for practical/âmundaneâ things
always look at the mundane causes for things first
showers are a great time to self-cleanse and ward
screaming and throwing your grimoire at spiders is probably going to happen eventually
you should probably set up a schedule or an alarm to water your plants
store your seeds away from waterÂ
dandelions are friends
donât pick the first dandelions of spring! bees need those to get started
sometimes just asking for something to lend itâs energy is enough
sometimes doing spells is the equivalent of kicking the universe in the knees until it does the thing
cursing bad people with lots of supporters is very difficult, but worth itÂ
be very careful with your wording and intent
your spells probably arenât going to work out the way you thought
baby witches: there are LITERALLY no rules.
donât feel like sandlewood is really all that cleansing? does jasmine just FEEL like it works better for you? bam. jasmine is a cleansing incense. donât feel like quartz is your end all be all âworks for everythingâ crystal but amethyst is? bam! then thatâs it.
the posts on tumblr are not rules. they are GUIDELINES. âthis worked for me so maybe it will work for you!â if something doesnât feel right then it ISNT. it works the same with tarot.
you are a witch. the strongest part of your power is your intuition. itâs in your blood â€ïž
YASSSSS
I am going to make a special altar just for gemstones, geodes and crystals, until then Iâll keep them with the herbs and incense oils and sticks, however, hereâs my favorite fluorite wand crystals Iâve got
Sometimes it can be difficult getting your hands on everything you need for a spell. In scenarios like that, these substitutions will come in handy. These are generally easy to find, as opposed to some rarer or pricier ingredients used in magic.

Reminder
Witchcraft is a practise - it is not a religion nor is it inherently religious.
You can be a witch without religion, or you can be a witch with it. But witchcraft itself, is simply a practise.

Witchcraft.
Witchcraft finds the disgraced, the beaten, the neglected, the hurt, the lonely, the tormented, the abused, the sorrowful, the scarred, the mutilated, the abandoned, the oppressed and gives them a new home.
Iâve never met a witch in real life without their fair share of trauma.
Witchcraft gives back our lives. It gives back what other people have taken from us, and makes us whole again.
Iâm thankful that it found me.
Imbolc Recipes
I just wanted to put together a series of posts with some recipes that Iâm interested in. Iâm not taking any credit for theseâlink is in the title of the recipe.
Lavender Bread
1-3 tablespoons lavender flowers
1 cup boiling water
1 package dry yeast
Πcup warm water
1 tablespoon shortening
2 tablespoons white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 œ cups bread flour
Steep lavender flowers in boiling water. Â Let steep until almost cool. Â Meanwhile, proof the yeast in warm water. Â
In a large mixing bowl fit with the dough hook, place the shortening, sugar, salt and flour. Â Strain the lavender infusion into the bowl while mixing at a slow speed. Â Pour in the yeast and continue to blend. Â If the dough seems too thin, add 2 tablespoons flour and mix well. Â Remove dough hook, cover bread mix with a piece of wax paper and let sit for 45 minutes.
Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a small loaf pan. Â Punch down dough, shape into loaf and place in pan. Â
When dough has doubled in bulk, put into oven and bake for 30-40 min. Â Bread is done when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Â Let cool on rack for 10 min. Â Remove from pan and drizzle a little melted butter over it. Â Serve warm.
Wondering how the word gypsy is a racial slur? Why are you referring to it as the G word when it literally means a free spirited traveller. What is so offensive about that?
Let me tell you a story, ignorant one.Â
Once upon a time, there were a group of people migrating from northern India and Pakistan after the invasion âof the Persian Muslims who have since settled in Trukey, all of Europe, and the Americas These people are called the Rromani.â (x)
Once the pale bird feces people of Europe came into contact with the Rromani, they believed them to hail from Egypt, thus calling them Gypsies.Â
Now about what disgusting white people like you have been trying to turn this racial slur into. There is nothing about being a free spirited traveller if youâre called such a word. What is up with white people romanticizing everything to make it seem all nice and rainbows for them?
âThey were not nomadic by choice. They moved around because they had to⊠they were persecuted everywhere they went, and still are, to this day. They were persecuted alongside the Jews in the Holocaust â the Roma & Sintiâ. They were forced to have this sort of nomadic lifestyle because âno country wanted them thereâ. (x)
Letâs not forget these lovely things Rromani people did and still go through because of who they are:
âForced sterilization (yes, it is still happening)
Eviction
Harassment (by law enforcement as well as civilians)
Fingerprinting (this is happening in Italy right now â all Romani people are being fingerprinted, simply because our race is considered âcriminalâ)
Concentration camps
Starvation
Exclusion from public schools and welfare programs
Bombings (it is not uncommon in places like the Czech Republic for people to throw molotov cocktails into the windows of Romani homes)â (x)
âFirst and foremost: THE WORD âGYPSYâ IS AN ETHNIC SLUR. It is a pejorative. It is an exonym that is hurtful and offensive. You need to accept this, period.
We are NOT your halloween costume. We are NOT your flowy skirt. We are NOT your fashion sense. We are NOT your wanderlust. We are NOT âboho.â
Gypsy is not fashion. Gypsy is not traveling. Gypsy is not a headband or a costume, or boho, or a long skirt.
Gypsy is a hurtful ethnic slur used to refer to the Romani people.
We cannot seem to emphasize this enough to people. This word is a slur. It was created to be a slur. Its meaning does not change. It will always be a slur. It will always be offensive.
âThe word is not yours. Itâs ours. We can use it as we see fit. You cannot.â - biggadjeworldÂ
We are a real people, with traditions, culture, and colorful heritage that spans centuries.â (x)
The âxâs in the post refer to sources you can click on and educate yourself with. On those pages, there are more links to become familiar to this slur and the Rromani people.
Also, donât forget to stop by thisisnotromani!
- Jess
This is some shit that the witchcraft and neopagan communities really need to get straight. You are not a âgypsyâ witch, that does not make you mystical, you are not special, you are just racist. V sorry.
I REALLLYYY need everyone to read this at least three times so there is no chance for confusion.
This is important! In America we are not used to hearing it as a slur, so it can be hard for us to realize itâs one if we donât run into it or seek it out. Fly across the pond and say it you will get VERY different responses. If you want replacement words for free spirit and bohemian aesthetic, just use âfree spiritâ or âhippieâ or even âflower childâ honestly. Hippie Witch sounds more catchy anyway đ»
Never appropriate someoneâs culture for the sake of âaestheticâ!!! Learn the history of the words you use. Respect people. Say what you mean (and if you use these slurs, you MEAN to be racist, no two ways about it!). If âfree spirited travelerâ appeals to you there are suggestions above- other suggestions:
Traveling witch, footloose, wanderlust, free-wheeling, free lance, roaming, nomadic, mugwump, beatnik, avant-garde, offbeat, alternative, idiosyncratic, arty, outlandish, backpacking, bird of passage, excursionist, explorer, gadabout, globetrotter, landloper, adventurer, nonjuror (like conjuror!), pereginator, peripatetic, rootless, scatterling
Thank you for educating people about this!
Imbolc is upon us! Hereâs a handy reference guide of witchy business to get up to.
For me, Imbolc is a great time to celebrate the warmer months coming soon and the return of the sun. Anything with solar or fiery correspondences works well for me around Imbolc, as well as anything having to do with keeping a happy home or inspiring creativity and the arts, since Brigid works with poets and artists often.Â
