Only 59 pages left to go in The Deathly Hallows and it’s got me crying. Also, one of my favorite moments during the Battle of Hogwarts that I really really hope will be in the show is this: “…as a herd of galloping desks came thundering past, shepherded by a sprinting Professor McGonagall. She appeared not to notice them: Her hair had come down and there was a gash on her cheek. As she turned the comer, they heard her scream, ‘CHARGE!’” I love that woman so much.
I’m also reading Not With A Bang by Temi Oh, and there’s a character whose last name is Snape. I genuinely love that. (Speaking of Temi Oh, even with the editing and proofreading issues that plague all three of her books, I think she’s genuinely one of the most promising sci-fi writers out there.)
Two Saturdays ago was my birthday, and my brother got me all eight of the Harry Potter movies on Blu-ray, and I seriously might have to have a movie marathon. I haven’t seen the Deathly Hallows movies since they were in theaters, when I was seventeen or so. Lord knows they’re not as good as the books, but I think it will be fun nonetheless.
don’t!!! fake!!!! your!!!! interests!!!! to!!!! make!!!! someone!!!! like!!!!! you!!!!
I have a friend who works at a bookstore and she was very proudly telling me that they don’t sell anything by J.K. Rowling and was going on and on about what a terrible person she is, and I said something like, “So she’s worse than Neil Gaiman?” And my friend was like, “He sucks, but she’s way worse”. And what do you know, a good number of his books are still on their shelves. What. The fuck. Figures that she works with a TIF.
It just kind of sucks because I’ve known this woman for over a decade; she and her wife were (to my knowledge) the first lesbians I ever met. Remember the joy of meeting people like you for the first time? Women who know what it’s like to love women? That moment where you stop feeling so alone? And then sometime in the last few years, my friend started getting super into all the gendie bullshit and started calling herself “queer” instead of gay or lesbian. It’s hard to really talk with her now. Again, I have to find people in this city who have broken free of gender ideology.
So I just finished reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and holy shit. Sorry, movie fans, but the book is about a million times better. The casting in that movie was atrocious. Emma Watson as Sam? Fucking creep-ass Ezra Miller as Patrick? No fucking thank you.
I don’t think I’ve mentioned how Ezra Miller really fucking skeeves me out, but he really does. I don’t remember exactly how it goes, but there’s a Tumblr post about how women use a nonbinary identity to identify out of oppression and be treated like a human being, and men use it so people forget about their criminal charges. That’s Ezra Miller to a T. Gross.
I see a good amount of people on YouTube and Reddit saying “REDACTED” whenever they’re talking about J.K. Rowling (like “the Harry Potter series by [REDACTED]”), and it’s the stupidest fucking thing. I never see them do the same thing for, say, Neil Gaiman, but of course we all know that an imperfect woman who defends women’s rights and says things that hurts people’s feelings is worse than a literal rapist. I’m willing to bet that none of these people actually know what JKR is saying or has said; they’re just dog piling for internet points. The way people hate women, more than they hate an actual fucking rapist, makes me sick to my stomach.
As Albus Dumbledore once said, “Always use the proper name for things. Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself.” Although I suppose in this case it’s not fear these idiots are feeling, but still.
My city keeps talking about LGBTQIA2S+ and BIPOC Pride month. Predictably, everything is about trans-identified people (mostly TIMs) and drag and a lot of spicy straights. Sometimes there will be some bisexuals and gay men, but lesbians (you know, female homosexuals, women who love women) are absolutely nowhere. I’m not even surprised, really; I’m just angry and sad. I have never felt less proud of being a homosexual in my life; I’ve never felt more hopeless, more discouraged, more disconnected from my supposed “community”.
All of the pictures and videos of drag queens in my city, twerking with city officials (one of whom is a TIM) fill me with this kind of knee-jerk disgust. The misogyny of it all! The fact that we were making some kind of progress a little over a decade ago! The fact that there was a time where I could say I was a lesbian and not be subjected to endless scrutiny and nonsense! I hate it! My mother, heaven bless her, keeps talking about “finding my peeps”, but where do I start?
I feel bad, because good god, the immense amount of privilege I have here: I will not be killed for being a homosexual. I can still get married if I one day have a partner. My parents and brother are endlessly supportive. These are not little things. But Christ alive, it is so very hard here to find anyone who hasn’t gulped down the gendie Kool-Aid. It makes it hard to even find friends, much less a girlfriend.
A reminder for this Pride month that female homosexuality is real, innate, unchangable and beautiful! It's a privilege to be born a lesbian! Despite everything we have to fight against to simply be allowed to exist, it's all worth it because of love for our fellow women.
Lesbian pride will never die because we will never stop existing! ✊
Finished Goblet of Fire earlier today. Now it’s on to Order of the Phoenix, and I can’t be the only one who lowkey has a crush on Tonks, can I? Always have, even years before I knew I was a lesbian.
Oh man, there’s just so much good stuff in this book, especially the battle at the Ministry and the veiled arch (which kind of reminds me of the Stone Table in Narnia, now that I think about it) and crazy, evilly wonderful Bellatrix. And the introduction of dear sweet Luna Lovegood who I just adore. And that hateful, hateful Umbridge! (Imelda Staunton, I’m sorry, but I don’t think you were quite evil enough in the movie. But maybe I should watch it again because it’s been a long time.) While I don’t love this book as much as Prisoner of Azkaban and Half-Blood Prince, it is still wonderful.
I love how I’ve read the entire Harry Potter series at least half a dozen times, maybe more, and there are so many moments that still just get to me. Like Harry just completed the first task in the Triwizard Tournament in Goblet of Fire, and that horrible wait in the tent, listening to the crowd and the commentary, still makes my stomach hurt with nerves. I still grin with joy as Harry flies off on his Firebolt. It doesn’t matter that I’ve read it before and I know what will happen; it affects me just as it did when I was a kid and reading it for the first time. That’s the sign of a damn good writer.
Being a lesbian has to be one of the most lonely experiences ever
Words cannot express how sad I’m going to be if we never get the two promised sequels to Pegasus by Robin McKinley.
I’m sure this has been discussed a billion times before, but holy shit, is JKR good at writing sports scenes! (And action scenes in general.) I think sports scenes are notoriously difficult to do well, and way too many times, I find myself very bored and very confused whenever I’m reading about football or baseball or whatever in fiction (with the exception of the opening baseball game in the novel The Chosen by Chaim Potok; that is a truly excellent scene that kicks off the plot and lets you get to know the characters). With Quidditch, the rules are easy to understand, the pace is breakneck and wildly exciting, and it’s just fun to read.
I’m at the Quidditch World Cup chapter in The Goblet of Fire, and I remember watching the movie in theaters when I was eleven and being so incredibly disappointed that we never got to see any Quidditch at all, or the Veela or the leprechauns. I really hope the show fixes that.
The opening chapter of The Goblet of Fire is so good. It gives me chills every single time. JKR is just too damn good.
lowkey how it feels to be an actual homosexual during pride month
And so, after throughly enjoying The Prisoner of Azkaban, do I begin The Goblet of Fire (which I also very much enjoy because this is where things really start getting dark and terrifying). This is another book that I really, REALLY hope the TV show does better than the movie. David Tennant as Barty Crouch, Jr. absolutely sucked imo. The stupid bullshit thing about how Beauxbatons was a girl’s school and Durmstrang was for boys, even though they’re canonically coed. The more I think about that movie, the more annoyed I get, because it feels like nobody who worked on it even read the book.
Something that I really hope the HBO show does different from the movie is the portrayal of Aunt Marge.
To be fair, I haven’t watched the movie in quite some time, but Aunt Marge was only on screen for maybe ten minutes tops, and there was no buildup to her being blown up. Harry getting angry didn’t feel earned. I love how in the book, you get a sense of time passing, the endless awful days going by, the increasingly terrible behavior of Marge that all comes to a head over a drunken dinner, Harry’s gloriously cathartic rage. Every time I read it, I appreciate it more and more. I get that Season 3 is ages and ages away, but it’s hard not to be excited about seeing one of my favorite books in the series being adapted properly.
