For once, Dayo was being completely serious, not a single smirk in place. “You did not ask me, I asked you.” Unable to resist a little joke, he added, “That’s how a proposal works, the man asks the woman.” More seriously, he stood up. “This is not something that will affect my life at all. I plan to one day marry for love, and I am sure that whoever I loved would not mind that I pretended to be married to help a friend.” If he ever did find love, he was sure it’d be with someone who had a sense of humour and loyalty. It wouldn’t be a good match otherwise. “My people, my family, they would not protest either, as it is my decision.” There was a little bit of pressure to marry an African woman, but Dayo never bowed to pressure. “I want to do this for you, Matilda.” He took her hands in his larger ones. “No friend of mine will ever have their choice taken from them. If you wish to stay at Hogwarts, this is a way. At least for now.”
It was a unorthodox offer, however Matilda had to admit that it was a rather favourable one. If her parents thought that she was already engaged, they might not be so insistent that she return. This would give her more time to figure out what to do while letting her stay at Hogwarts. The question is if she could deceive her family like this. In the end, she had to return anyway. Although... technically Dayo did propose (not accounting for the word "fake" in it), and she really didn't want to leave. "You are sure of this?" Her question was more to reassure her that she could go through with this. "If you are, I will try to find a way to get out of my parents' arrangement as soon as I could," she promised. “I also won’t be able to thank you enough. You will have my utmost gratitude.”
