He wasn’t even sure how old he was. He lost count after 100,000 millennia, a time he now practically considered his youth. He had a name but it was meaningless to him, having had so many it was insignificant. He supposed his most meaningful name was once John... not that it mattered. There was no one to speak it anymore.
Everything was dark. Cold. Void. Everything had died… he had seen the last star burn out, the last black hole fizzle into nothing, the last asteroid disintegrate. If time existed then John knew nothing of it existing in this vast nothingness. They said he lived forever… but he didn’t think so. He existed yes, but lived? No. He couldn’t live in the state he was in. He was just a soul bound to a body. And he was so, so tired.
“… Why don’t you save me?” The man’s voice cracked, looking up. Or what he considered up. “God… there is nothing left… why do you leave me here?” He looked around, then back ‘up.’ “Have… have you abandoned me? Do I mean nothing to you?”
Tears were welling up in his eyes, a knot wedging in his throat. “I have been a man of faith all my life Lord why do you keep me here have you forgotten me?!” The immortal bit back a sob, hand holding the cross around his neck. “I-Is this my Hell? Am I to exist alone for the rest of eternity? Is there no saving me? If I am to exist this way forever please God just TELL ME!” Sobs began to shake his body, hot tears the only heat in this darkness. “I d-don’t understand! I-I, I have d-done as mu-uch good as I c-could I tried t-to redeem myself from a foolish mistake I made as a boy why do you do this to me?!?”
He curled himself up as he sobbed, arms going around his knees. “G-God please I don’t understand! I ju-ust want to die! I ha-ave seen e-everyone and ev-everything I c-care ab-abou-ut die, wh-why can’t you take me?! E-Even if- if I sto-op existing e-even if I d-don’t ma-make it t-t-tto heaven even if I-I become no-nothing just anything but this!”
“GOD P-PLEASE! WHY HA-HAVE YOU ABANDONED ME?!” He began to scream, voice shattered in agony. “I DON’T WANT TH-THIS PLEASE GOD I’LL D-DO ANYTHING! L-LET THIS T-TORMENT END I’M BE-BEGGING YOU! SAVE ME!!!!!!” The immortal wailed before breaking down into violent sobs, gasping and choking and coughing for air as he mentally collapsed.
He wasn’t sure how long he sobbed for. He would assume for a couple of hours, but time was nothing here. It could have been thousands of years or just a blip in time for all he knew. He didn’t stop until something caused his eyes to open… a small, fragile light had been born.
Whimpering, John looked at it. Was it… could it be? A star? He went to grab it when another lit up… then another. The man’s tears and movements had begun something new… the destroyed universe beginning to gather around John and collect into clouds of gas and dust. He breathed out and the movement of the dust caused many little lights to come to life. It was then he truly got a look at himself… black, darkness, filled with lights. Stars. Breathing out a long breath a nebula formed, stars sparking and flashing to life. Every movement caused new stars to form… gestures forming them into galaxies. Tears still rolled down his face, water dripping and floating into the void… Taking one of the stars and the droplets, John brought over more dust. Putting it into the tear. Then watched it solidify into stone… then as he breathed on it the brown became green, orbiting the sun.
“… is this why?” John finally spoke, voice tiny. “But… I am no God… I just…want to rest. I could not care for these lives…”
John closed his eyes, shuddering. He just wanted to… stop.
That’s when he felt a soft hand on his shoulder, and a voice.
There was just enough time so that a small smile could cross his face… and then finally... he found peace.
Having a character who literally lives forever is really heartbreaking guys this has been a PSA
