I’ve been gone a long ass while. But my fiancé is now on her her bacholrette trip, and I’m drunk, so when is a better time for an update? She always teases and says I’m Phil dunphy. If you don’t know who that is, look it up and live. frighteningly enough, I get it. Nerdy, dad jokes, best intentions, I get it. But the weird thing is, I’ve never found it more relevant. I keep having these brilliant (I say that objectively) thoughts, but I know that only she knows why I think it’s so funny. And why I’m the only one that thinks it’s funny. I’ve essentially been talking to myself this past drunken hour. And receiving my own dad jokes with my own eye rools that said jokes deserve. I couldn’t be happier.

I’ve purchased an engagement ring. Not too fancy, but I’ll post a picture of it when it comes in the mail. I’ve been with the girl for a year now, and I’ll be moving in with her in January. Something is different though. A year isn’t very long, but now that I’m older, the time table works differently. It’s less about ‘how long we’ve been together,’ and more about ‘is this the right time in each other’s respective lives.’ Everyone has always said, “timing is everything.” And to be honest, its hard to argue with that when nothing is going the way you’d planned. But now that I see what timing actually means, I completely understand the merit behind the cliche.

Girls in the past have always been special in one way or another. I’ve loved some of them, and I’ve been infatuated with others. The end of the relationship was often looming from the beginning, or a sudden change would show a lapse in timing or character judgment. In my mind, there was always this idea in my OWN head that would whisper, “Wait till after _____.” That blank was refillable on a regular basis due to whatever inconvenience I had incoming. But at some point during my ‘adulting’ I realized that I had finally reached a certain level of homeostasis in my life. It was shortly after I met a girl who was also at the same point of equilibrium. So, here we are.

Timing isn’t just a matter of age, time together, or goals accomplished. It’s being old enough to be able to accomplish some goals alone, and then spending the time together to realize that you want to accomplish the rest of your goals WITH the other person. The catch is, you have to find another person that is at the SAME place in life with you.
