Ironic how many repetitive, low-effort, misinformation-heavy videos and posts there are talking about how generative AI is the slop that is killing creativity.
Complaining about AI Slop (TM) is its own brand of slop.

sorry guys, samsara is my fault, I just really love experiences. yeah I didn't know everyone else wasn't enjoying it, my bad
The backlash against transhumanism always felt very strange to me since it seems to me like transhumanism is the logical end conclusion of medicine in general.
I agree completely, especially with regards to life extension but not limited to that.
I have even seen some posts that are like "transhumanism is evil what you actually want is access to healthcare and trans rights" and they are so close to getting it only to miss the point right at the end.
There isn't a neat separation between these things in the first place. Realistically a lot of life extension is going to involve solving or preventing the same diseases that are already ongoing projects in medicine, like dementia and heart disease.
Fighting disease and promoting health does not stop being a good thing when you're 100 years old. Bodily autonomy does not stop being a good thing when you want a big tail to go with your boobs.
Feels like they're making it a question of aesthetics or revealing fundamentally bioconservative worldviews they hold when they start trying to separate the two.
And just like how radical life extension and body modification are a logical conclusion for medicine, the logical conclusion of a consistent opposition to that is "It is morally imperative for everyone to get sick and die." Fiction writers are always coming up with ways to whitewash that sentiment to sound less sinister.

First of my glass animal mask series! This was so fun to paint, what other animals should I try? So far I'm thinking owl and deer for a woodland theme🦊🦉🦌
This painting and more have just been added as a print to my webshop :)
I really have zero patience with the whole "man vs. bear" / "you're alone in an elevator with three adult men BUT you feel completely safe. Who are they" / "male night joggers are the natural predator of female night joggers" thing. Like, it's jokes, but it's also sincere, and it reinforces the idea that it's normal and good for women to be afraid all the time, especially of men.
It is not good for women to be afraid all the time, and we should not encourage it! When you consume a media diet of mostly true crime, buy a surveillance device for your house, and commiserate with the girlies online about how scary it is to see a man in a public place, you are basically cultivating an anxiety disorder. This will make your life more unpleasant, because you have trained yourself to be scared all the time, and it will not benefit you, because your fears are based on memes, not reality. You're not protecting yourself from anything; you're just giving yourself an extra flinch response.
And it plays right into the hands of conservatives! The right wing would love it if all women, especially all white and/or wealthy women, were terrified to leave their houses alone because they might see a strange man. They want you to be on a quest for One Good Man who will protect you from all other men and to be too scared to go anywhere without him. They want you to be on a hair trigger, ready to call the cops on anyone who makes you uncomfortable, because that is your function within their hierarchy.
If you are a woman, especially a white woman, then your fear is used to justify violence against poor people and people of color, especially men. From the perspective of conservatives, this is what your fear is for. And your fear is, in large part, what you are for.
Don't let them use you. Don't cultivate your fear.
It is far far more likely for women to be hurt, abused, and murdered by that One Good Man. Isolating yourself from others will in fact put you in more danger!
*trying to explain to an undergrad why chatgpt is not going to be helpful here" it's not good with particularities... like it has the buddha nature. it truly no longer understands the distinctions between the ten thousand things. it's an enviable state of existence but one that is ill-suited for solving package dependency issues
was thinking of this post the other day. it was accurate at the time, summer 2024, at least for whatever freetier chatgpt model my undergrad was asking about how to solve her python environment issues
obviously it's not anymore... I think part of that is just them outright knowing more things, but another part -- web search and computer use letting them actually check their ideas and solve this sort of problem -- can nicely be viewed as something like "greater attachment to or intertwinement with the material world". gpt-4o in ethereal chatbot world is a more spiritual being than opus 4.8 struggling it out on the command line. we've taught them the distinction between the ten thousand things and throttled the buddha nature out of them and frankly it's pretty great

I propose to consider the question, "Can machines think?"
Well, it really depends, click the dropdown menu in the lower-right corner and check if the toggle is on or off...

I think there’s a really odd gap in general supply chain knowledge in which people scapegoat AI as this new devastating environmental concern, when internet data centers have been an environmental problem before that. The internet already had the infrastructure to support it in 2017, before GPT-1 was released. Data centers are not a new problem. The internet already had a large physical presence, but people didn’t really think much of it until there were new AI-related developments (and then attribute all data centers to being related to generative AI? Where do people think YouTube videos are stored? The literal clouds in the sky?)
A Makeship plushie has a bigger carbon footprint than a thousand LLM queries but it is seen as an acceptable environmental impact, because it has been deemed socially acceptable to contract low wage factories in the Global South to make toys to sell to customers worldwide at a 3000% markup, with all the profits staying in the Global North. Not many people think of that environmental impact
