Important things to note in this scene:
- Puppycat and Violet went to elementary school together.
- The two-mouthed humanoid creature from the pilot is their teacher. Either that or the one living in Wallace was related to the teacher and knew Puppycat and Violet somehow. I am partial to the former and they somehow ended up inside of a fish in fishbowl space.
They also go on to say while they are reprimanding Puppycat for not paying attention in class that if he doesn’t get serious about thriving in his schoolwork, he won’t amount to anything, just a little monster.
And as we all know, he did, in fact, become a little ‘’monster’’, but I wouldn’t say he didn’t amount to anything.
Additionally, we can take from that interaction that they didn’t like Puppycat for struggling in their class for not paying attention often and not doing well enough to consider him passing it.
I would believe in addition to that is it wasn’t the first time they have rebuked him by their sharp, disapproving tone, their choice of words, the number of toys they keep in their small box they have confiscated from their students being his including the one they had just taken away from him, and the criticism by them of him being the worst student in their class alluding as much.
- Puppycat was a sensitive and gentle child who struggled in school and because of his benign nature probably made him susceptible to being teased and picked on but had resolve and determination to keep working hard on what was important to him and not letting the harassment by his peers and admonishment by his teacher,( hopefully, it wasn’t more than once and not frequently and not by any other teacher or staff member at the school), discourage him. Even if what was important to him wasn’t always his schoolwork and grades.
- Violet was more confident and assertive. She wasn’t shy of calling people out on doing something unfair and wrong, sometimes even getting physical about it if she deems what someone is doing particularly wrong.
- It is not shown or implied that she struggles with schoolwork like Puppycat does, but she definitely finds it boring and isn’t devoted to it enough to stay in class as she leaves in the middle of it with zero concern on how it will affect her grades and school record.
= This can be further implied for she couldn’t care less about getting in trouble for kicking her teacher hard enough to knock them down to the floor, especially for talking down on Puppycat and possibly on her as well for maybe having similar beliefs and ambitions as him, and I suspect she and the teacher didn’t get along all that well and often disagreed and argued with one another seeing as how personal her rebuke and kick to them was.
- I also love that she did it for Puppycat, as it tells she is protective of him and strongly suggests she takes care of him from bullies and others who wish to hurt him for caring about him sincerely but remains subtle about it for being reserved on showing her more warm emotions.
- The candy Bee gets for her birthday every year through her father’s birthday/ repair box was candy he, Puppycat, and Violet obtained on their many missions together as candy hunters and apparently isn’t regarded highly as a profession by the society Puppycat, Violet, and he lived in.
