Chapter 5 - change

If you are not afraid to grow, please teach me. Because I am so scared everytime I look back and I realize that things are never going back to what they were.

If you are not afraid to leave, please teach me. Because one day I’ll look outside of my window and I won’t see the orange flowers, the grass and the bamboo and I don’t know how it will feel.

If you are not afraid of emotions, please teach me. Because I don’t want to feel differently about things I care about, but i know that I will. Just as I quit sleeping with my teddy bear as soon I grew up, and I tought I never would.

If you are not afraid of change,please tell me, because I tought everyone was. 

And I am, everyday, anytime.

But it’s good to change. And to grow. And to leave. And to see things differently. And it’s okay if memories will be just memories, because they will be more and more, and because it’s nice to have stories to tell, but we need to move on if we want to have someone to tell them to.

Idk maybe it really is a generational thing but competition is so pointless and dumb? Like really think about what good its done, basically nothing good comes from competition except the feeling of pride I guess. Like war, war is a type of competition. Competition is like the whole reason college is so expensive bc if the job market wasn’t so competitive then college would probably just be funded like public/private highschools and so many freaking people wouldn’t have e their life ruled by crippling debt just because they wanted a degree for a job they thought they would enjoy.

K-12 grades girls are encouraged to always try to one up any other girl that’s around them. Then all other generations their biggest reason as to why this generation is the worst is because we’re so ‘sensitive’ but like old people get so mad at participation trophies??? Why are they so mad at that what’s so bad about not having to compete with everyone all the time what’s so horrible about just liking yourself the way you are and not worrying about one-upping everyone else?

Also what trophies are all those adults winning now? First place in annoying the fuck out of everyone else and talking about the 'good old days’ where we all had segregation and women had even less rights to their bodies? Get off my dick Joan and start worrying about where your husband’s has been while you’ve been yapping about 1000 years ago

Most people think we’re nihilist and it’s right, but,

but, we also care. A lot. And you can see it all the time.

You see it when someone fails a test that it was important for them and they cry. And you see it when all their friends try to console them, remembering them that it will be ok, maybe not now, but someday.

You see it when people have that pet they love and will take the shit out of you if you hurt them or say that they are not cute.

You see it when people identify signs of abuse on some else, and they are right there, letting them know that they are not alone.

You see it in posts like: “If you suffer from anxiety, depression, etc, send me an MP, YOU ARE NOT ALONE OK?

And try to tell me that you haven’t seen any post supporting all the lgtb+ that are ‘still on the closet’ or stuff like that.

You see it when people know that you are going through something hard, and they look you carefully every day for any signs that you are hurting yourself. (Once I had to explain to one of my friends that all of my bruises and cuts were from me being clumsy as fuck and my three cats, not any type of abuse.)

You see it when someone in your class has a panic/ anxiety/ epilepsy attack and 70% of that class search how to help with one, only in the case that it happens again.

You see it in all the people that ask if you are ok if you are not acting like usual.

You see it in all that post around about what to do, or how to act during panic/ anxiety/ epilepsy attack, or with a person with depression/ diabetes, etc

You see it when people actually ask their chauffeurs their names, or to the people that clean their salon, etc, and ask them how was their day because we all have heard how that usually makes their day, and we want to make people happy.

You see it when people discuss about the world they live on, its situation, and actually propose HOW to changes it, how they are trying, and HOW THEY ARE DOING IT.

We care, maybe not in the same way that millennials or baby boomers do, maybe not in the same things that they care. But we do care. We are here, in some world that is, at the same time, changing for good and for bad, and we care. Not for us, our emotional or physical health, but for other’s.

So yeah, we are nihilists, but we also do care about stuff

Chapter 4 - Just because

Here I am again, it's 12:05 AM, another late night working on the "Generation Z call".

This morning I looked in the mirror and I asked myself: "Why are you doing this?". The answer didn't come right away. I tought about it all day long. What finally came to my mind was simple. I am young. This is the time of my life when I can do things just because. Life doesn't actually always have to answer questions. We are humans. We do what we want to do, what we can do, what we feel like doing.

So here you go brain, that's your answer. The answer to this and so many other doubts. I feel like nowadays more people need to give that answer to themselves. "Why do they act like that?", "Why are they doing that?", "Why is she fighting?", "Why is he trying?".

Just because.

Because while we spend all life tring to explain things that aren't actually meant to be explained, out there, someone learned that life works better when you sing out loud, when you dance with no music, when you paint on the walls and do runaways on the streets. That the world gets magic when you don't try to solve all of its mistery. That people are more intresting when there's no reason for them for being it. That, in the end, it is more fascinating to look at things we don't understand and that we fall in love with the things that we don't know how to read.

Chapter 3 - freedom

PURPOSE 2: To grow together with other artists

Art is my language. 

And I speak trough it way better than how I do trough Italian or English. 

I know that it works the same way for billions of people out there.

In my opinion, what’s fascinating of art is that it doesn’t need to convey emotions, stories and ideas into logic thoughts. It’s irrational, like human minds. It is the expression of the universal, it goes over individuality. I know art is, first of all, a vehicle of democracy and so, a vehicle of freedom. And all that people want is to be free.

Since being free wouldn’t make us happy if we could’t share our freedom with someone else, art is important also as a bound between people. And that’s what the “Generation Z Call” is looking for. Bounds, links. Something that goes past individual differences, we are looking for the identity of a generation, the story of young souls that comprehend and talk using the same tools. We are looking for people that are aware of being the future of the world. 

Why?

I honestly have no clue.

I guess that it all begins with the need of finding something to fight for, a reason to create, knowing that maybe no one is ever gonna see our works besides our families and friends. It begins with the need to build communication where there’s a lot of talking but no saying.

It begins as an adventure, as a game, the real question is, where is it gonna end?

Chapter 2 - Always on our phones

The Generation Z Call

“Every generation needs a new revolution”

PURPOSE 1: “To demonstrate that the Generation Z has something to say”

Since I was little I grew up with the idea that our generation wasn’t as good as the others: we don’t have our opinions, we are always looking at our phones and we never had to face hard times when growing up.  It took me almost 18 years to realize that those are all lies. That all the generations think that the new ones are worse. That the fact that we are digital natives doesn’t mean that we can’t be creative. But change is scary and who is scared of the future always tries to hold on to the past.

So here I am, and there they are. Millions of young souls with their own ideas and opinions. Millions of different minds developing everyday billions of thoughts. Whoever thinks that our generation isn’t socially involved must have never met a genzer* at all. We are everywhere: fighting for the climate change, for the LGBTQ+ community, for freedom, equality and humanity. And the ones of us that don’t join manifestations in person express themselves through the media. Every single day we share, like and interact with social and political content on our networks. It’s not less valuable than manifesting on the streets or than joining strikes. It’s only a new way of doing politics, a new way to express ideas: wider, faster, different. That’s our way, the Generation Z’s way.

Are you still wondering what’s on our phones? On our phones there’s change. And that’s what we are looking at all the time. Change. Not the frozen still society that thinks media are wrong, that still thinks as people of a century ago used to do. And we aren’t alienated into our phones. They aren’t our escape from reality. They actually are the only reality that represents us, the only reality where our voices matter. They are our vehicle to share opinions, they are our squares for our manifestations. Does this make any sense to you? Because to me it does. Are you still wondering what’s on our phones? On our phones there are people. Real people, from all around the world. There are different cultures, different languages and different ways of thinking. On our phones there is a cosmopolitan space for the Generation Z, which really isn’t anymore a generation of citizens of nations as much as it is a generation of citizens of the world. What else? On our phones there’s art. Famous and unknown artists, people that speak for us with their works. There art galleries of incredible photos, shows of singers and dancers. There’s fashion, there’s poetry, there are images. There’s beauty. An incredible amount of it. Last but not least, on our phones there are sentiments. Love stories and friendships. People that understand us even if they never met us. On our phones there’s unity, on our phones there’s the rest of the Generation Z. And I know the internet can be dangerous, but compared to all of this, isn’t it worth the risk?

Finally when people say that our generation “never had to face hard times when growing up”, I think that they should be really cautious with that. First of all we are all different, no story can be compared to the others, generalizing like that can be very dangerous. Secondly our generation has gone through different things than the others. Maybe some of us, in Europe and Northern America escaped poverty and wars but still, this doesn’t make our generation a generation of people that never went through difficulties. Please pay attention to it because some of us are screaming and you can not hear them.

Chapter 1 - Art Nouveau

The Generation Z Call

The “Generation Z call” project first came to my mind one day while I was studying the Art Nouveau for my Art test. I was reading about the Universal Exposition of St. Louis (1904) when I realized that I didn’t know anything about how artistic movements work today. I bet that there’s one, or even more than one. Unfortunately, because of my personality, I am a person which tends to create before learning and I know this is a defect 99% of the time but I really hope the “Generation Z call” will be part of that little fortunate 1%.

So right away my mind started developing ideas of how a new movement could grow and what kind of changes it could bring to the society. I ended up thinking that trying to create a whole artistic movement was probably a little too ambitious even for a daydreamer like me, that has so many utopian ideas that a lifetime wouldn’t be enough to even start working on them all. The compromise between my heart and my brain was what we named a “Call”: a little less challenging, a little more fun.

Now, what is the “Generation Z Call”? First of all is our way to express. Is a vehicle for our voices, which matter as we are the future of the world. My dream is to find someone else that is as much excited about the project as we are, that realizes that this isn’t something we do to spam ourselves but that is our way to find people like us: with the same enthusiasm, similar dreams and hopefully a completely different culture, new ideas and different opinions from ours. Secondly the GZC is sort of a game. We are still young, which lots of choices to make, this is our time to live adventures. And this project is an adventure. 

I don’t know if we are gonna change something. Most likely not, but at least, while we try, we’ll have the chance to have fun.

This is the beginning of something new. Our new project is named “Generation Z call” and it’s meant to unify as many young artists as possible towards one common purpose: to demonstrate the our generation is able to create, to think and to express and that we aren’t the kids always looking at our phones that everybody believes us to be. 

If you feel like this purpose represents you please join the Call by preparing an art work to be shared in a day of September during which every artist we reached out to is gonna post something with the theme “young people have a voice”. Thank you for your attention.
