me (crazy eyes, covered in blood): I NEED to finish writing my fanfic. so I can start writing a different fanfic.
Hereās the thing: authors know when they get a rec on an older story. Thereās a telltale uptick of kudos (with a 10-15% comment rate if youāre lucky) in your digest email.
The thing is, thereās no way to know where these people are coming from. In the before, when fandom was more in the corners we all knew about, you could search LJ or a message board or whatever social bookmarking site we were using. You could join the community and participate.
You could get a little dopamine hit by seeing someone tell their friends why they loved your story.
Anymore, those recs are hidden in discords, or in tiktoks or instagram slideshows that you canāt search for. Theyāre inaccessible, not discoverable unless youāre already there. You may never know why 27 people left kudos on an old story of yours, what they liked and found in your writing. You just get the thumbs up and a kinda lonely feeling, cause these could be your people. You could like them, maybe. You could be friends.
But youāll never find out why they stopped by, or what people are saying about you behind your back, and thatās sad.
So thank you to the people who still do public rec lists on this webbed site. You are my sunshine, and Iām appreciative of all of you.
If you are recced a fic and enjoyed it, leave a comment telling the author where you came from! We like to know!
I love the idea of Jack and Robby on a beach day where Robby is a little insecure about how he looks in just his swim shorts and tries to avoid being seen even though Jack knows he's hot in that shirt and wants to swim.
So Jack promptly spills most of his lunch all over Robby's shirt - whoops he's such a klutz.
Then once the shirt is off - Jack complains that he wants to go in the water but it's so far and his plastic foot is bad on sand and Robby doesn't want to swim so there's nobody to help him.
Suffice to say, Jack gets to watch his deliciously sexy man haul him all the way to the water: bouncy tummy, saggy tits and all. ššššš

everybody say thank you, fanfiction
the point of fanfiction is to write something so self indulgent that nobody else has thought of it before or cares
this genuinely makes me so mad. some of you really donāt deserve fanfics. at all.
comment like this, besides the ai witch hunt, is one of the reasons why fanfic writers donāt want to post their fics anymore.
we write for free. whenever we can. whenever we have time. whenever weāre not too exhausted by life and responsibilities. we write for our own enjoyment. as a hobby. not a job. we update whenever we can. whenever we want. we do not owe anybody anything.
one of my favorite fics was updated after literal 13 years. but the point is that fanfic writers do not owe you anything. whether a fic was abandoned forever or updated after a decade or two is not something you as a stranger has a say in.
stop being entitled. stop treating fanfic writer as a content farm or a machine that produces contents for your enjoyment.
weāre not your employees. weāre not your slaves. weāre kind enough to share what we write for our own enjoyment with you for free. so either respect and appreciate us or be quiet.
Iāll never forget the fanfic space on wattpad back in 2016-2017āish where its culture was that writers would not post their new chapters until they reached x amount of votes (kudos) and comments. I mean Iād never judge anyone for how they chose to update their fics even though I didnāt agree with them. but like. it was the entire wattpad fanfic culture back then that made most writers believe they had to set these specific numbers of votes and comments that they must reach first before they posted the next chapters. so if you were on the fanfic corner of wattpad during that time, youād most likely have seen fics where it said in the chapter something like ā50 votes and 20 comments for the next chapter!ā and it was literally the norm and so normalized that I didnāt see anything weird about it back then. but looking back, years after Iāve left wattpad for ao3, yeah that culture as a whole was weird and it shaped writers into thinking that they wrote for the sake of shallow engagement instead for the joy of getting to create, it shaped writers into thinking that their ficsā worth was decided and dictated by strangersā approval. and then tiktok became a thing and this mindset continued. not to mention how wattpad is full of ads now unless you pay the site monthly for a premium, ad-free service.
so like. man, this is why I love ao3. thereās none of these capitalism or algorithm bullshit on ao3. just writers creating out of love and passion. everybody say thank you ao3
some people will be like āI wonder why fanfic writers donāt share their works anymorešā and then this is them when a writer is kind enough to share something they write ā as a hobby, for their own enjoyment ā with them for free.
some people really donāt realize how privileged they are that they get fanfics for free. imagine having access to something for free because someone is kind enough to share it with you⦠and then being rude, entitled and an ungrateful pos to that person who was kind enough to share their creation with you for free
āalmost 1 year is a lil too much for meā fuck off. fanfic writers donāt owe you anything. one of my favorite fics was updated after 13 years, and what I did is that I thanked the author for choosing to continue the work, I didnāt act like a spoiled toddler by asking why they didnāt update sooner. and even if a writer chooses to abandon their fic permanently with no explanation, that is their choice, their hobby, their decision. they donāt owe your entitled ass anything.
you people let tiktok rot your brains to the point you see everything as content farm and engagement. not a piece of art created by the artistās love and passion. itās dystopian.
anon in my inbox said fanfic writers who wrote about dark and taboo topics were not āreal writersā because of what they wrote about.
reblog if you believe anon is wrong and writers are writers, no matter what they write about. no matter how they portray these taboo topics.
reblog if you believe art can be about topics that are controversial, taboo or outright disturbing, and artists who create controversial, taboo or outright disturbing art are as valid as artists who create art of conservative values.
reblog to laugh at anon ā”
Any person who writes is a real writer, thereās no right or wrong way to be a writer
Fandoms have a serious problem with how creators are being treated these days.
Fandom creators spend hours of their free time to create something to make fandom thrive...for free and for the love of the game.
And what do they get? A wholeass heap of fuck all. No reblogs, no comments, no nothing. And people are surprised that creators are dropping out left, right, and centre??
"Why is there no long fic anymore?" "Why did my favourite writer stop?" "Why is my favourite artist not posting anymore?"
I implore you to ask yourself: "What's the last thing I did to support my fandom? Does my favourite creator know they are my favourite? When was the last time I left a comment under something?"
