Intro Post

Hello! A very quick about the author:

I am a 40+ yr.o. fanfic writer and reader who has recently returned to fandom spaces after more than a decade of pursuing other nerdy interests. I created this sideblog to stash my whumpy stuff (a word that literally did not exist when I was last writing), but I'm delighted that there are so many people who are enjoyers of this specific thing, because boy howdy am I in that camp.

My main fandoms at present are Six of Crows and Arcane, but I'm an equal opportunity fic writer and consumer, where the main criteria of interest are morally grey, emotionally and physically broken people and canon world building that hints at, but never fully realizes its potential.

I follow from @genuineformality, where I reblog with no particular rhyme or reason except that I enjoy it and/or have thoughts about it.

You can find me and my fan work on AO3 at genuineformality, where the bulk of my work is self-indulgent, often at least whump-adjacent, and of dubious interest to anyone who lives outside of my head.

they can feel themselves getting worse, and they know eventually they'll need to seek medical help if they don't want the damage to get worse

but they don't want to bring it up to anyone - how humiliating it'd be, after everything, to once again ask for more help, especially if they had to go into any detail

its been weeks since the whump happened, it all should be over now

maybe its for the best that no one has noticed yet

Late night trouble

whump prompt that came to me in the shower:

An exhausted character is stopping to rest (returning after a battle, pausing on a long and difficult journey, etc.) after they were hurt. They arrive at [home, an inn, etc.] filthy and bone-tired.

Someone hurries to draw them a warm bath, then leaves them to their privacy. They undress, stiff with exhaustion and wincing as the dried-blood-soaked clothing pulls at their skin.

But it's worth it when they're able to sink into the tub. The warm water immediately helps with their aching muscles. It's been so long since they've felt this warm, this comfortable.

At some point they notice that the water, already a disgusting red-brown from the blood and dirt caked on them, is turning a bit more red. They realize that as they undressed they ended up removing their very makeshift bandages, which caused their wounds to start bleeding again. And the warm water made their blood vessels expand and made them bleed more.

Now they've been sitting in the bath, bleeding, for who knows how long. They know they should get out, dry themselves off, and see to those wounds (surely someone will have some spare rags. They can handle the rest themselves.), but they're just so tired. And the water is so warm...

(Later, someone comes in to check on them, only to find them passed out from exhaustion in (quite literally) a bath of their own blood.)

When a character is revealed to be nonhuman, or a villain/living weapon while wounded, and the discovering character seems like they're about to point out the obvious in a horrified tone, only to go

Like yassss characters not caring at all about their friend's true identity. They only care that someone is need of help

A bit of nuance I find interesting are living weapons that are made for more delicate work.

They are still dehumanized, expendable, and have no life outside their purpose, but that purpose is espionage and social manipulation as well as murder. They have an inconspicuous name rather than a number. They can take care of themselves. You’d probably find them charming.

Living weapons that could operate on their own, undercover, for years. Who could escape and seem perfectly normal, even if it’s just another act. Who know to hide their injuries or else they’ll be “decommissioned”, but will expertly misdirect any questions along with just gritting their teeth and not showing that it hurts.

I guess I’m thinking about Black Widow. Still think it’s neat.

Gasp, i've written a few short stories about my lesbian fire genasi duo! Wick is genderfluid (she/they/he) and has chronic pain from before the initial Whumpening, and Osmi is demigirl (she/they) who has been trying to help Wick find a cure to the illness slowly burning her and her memories alive. Favorite subjects: nightmares, ptsd, hallucinations, chronic pain flare-ups, and more!

West - immediately after the events that left them inches from death, Wick and Osmi are travelling west to escape their captor and go into hiding. But Wick's wounds only seem to be getting worse, and tensions rise.

The First Few Nights - my first time writing about them. The beginning of their new life in a shitty shack in Gillad, Wick begins to process the nightmare she and her partner survived.

Seen - Months later, Wick attempts to go outside, but the new memories that dont seem to burn away like the others taunt her.

Shelter - ten years later, after the events of Ballad of Ennersval (our campaign) session 38, Wick cleans a now empty apartment and reflects on the toll her body has been taking.

“The Heart and the Hunger” has Celeste, a female vampire whumpee who was owned as a pet. She gets rescued by a bounty hunter who was after her last owner, and is now acting as an underqualified caretaker.

“Hell Is Empty” has Tara, a college girl whose boyfriend sacrifices her to summon a demon. Because the boyfriend is not the most competent magician, he messes up the summoning and the demon ends up bound to Tara. The demon, Reth, has their own issues they're working through, and Tara and Reth end up as mutual caretakers.

“Viaticum” has a fallen angel whumpee who gets found by a demon. The demon, for unknown reasons, decides to help the angel rather than hurt her. Both angel and demon use she/they pronouns.

“Blood of the Covenant” has a vampire who was turned as a child, so she will forever be a little girl. She gets captured by a vampire hunter who can't bring himself to kill her, and taken back to the vampire hunter's guild for further study.

“Disdain All Glittering Gold” has two female whumpees. There's Solana, who has the precarious position of being a woman aboard a ship, bringing bad luck. And then there's the mermaid that the sailors just caught.

So far "Disdain All Glittering Gold" has only one part, but the others are longer, and they're all in progress!

nothing quite like a whumpee no one knows existed. caretaker inheriting a house and oh god- there's someone in the basement. taking over a ship and- Is that a prisoner? hero getting kidnapped or infiltrating a base, stulbling into a room where they find a bleeding whumpee. spy getting interrogated by someone with suspicious wounds. getting thrown into a cell with someone who's been there for a long time.

When the whumpee is so concussed/ drugged/ feverish/ suffering from serious blood loss that they keep zoning out.

Their mind wanders away, or their train of thoughts keeps derailing or jumping all over, or concentrating is very hard, or they almost fall asleep/ pass out every few minutes or so, or they kind of just freeze and stare into the void.

Friends and/ or caretakers keep having to wake them up or try to get them to focus.

They get worried over whumpee being unable to hold a normal conversation, or unable to fill a role or do something important expected of them. They need the whumpee awake just a little longer, perhaps even to save their live.

They keep telling whumpee: "Are you with me?" or "Whumpee, can you hear me?" or "Stay with me, whumpee." or "Whumpee, please, you have to focus!"

Maybe caretakers and or friends are resigned to the possibility whumpee is not lucid enough for now and cannot help. Or resigned to try again later when the fever gets better, or the blood volume gets restored, or the drugs wear off.

Maybe whumpee is fully aware of how much they keep zoning out. They can feel guilty about it, or try harder in vain, or get very confused or worried. They can be in denial about it or unhappy about not being allowed to rest/ pass out

Okay I don't have room for all this shit in the tags

First of all, I have no idea how I'm supposed to differentiate between "some" and "entirely," I have no idea what "some" would look like. Is this a metaphor/parallel to me and the pain scale now that I live in constant pain (i.e. that it's asking me to quantify what is no longer quantifiable at this point)? Maybe

Secondly, YES, entirely, because pain is just a lens I see the world through. Whether it's my politics, or my philosophy, or my relationships, or my writing, or my sexuality, everything is filtered through that lens of pain. And viewing life through that lens has been completely transformative for all of it.

And this makes a lot of people uncomfortable. I had to walk out on a therapist because she couldn't handle the contents of my BTHB card, and looked at me like I was a budding serial killer. I now refuse to see any doctor or therapist who doesn't have experience treating chronic pain patients.

My "sudden" foray into kink, especially as a submissive masochist, has alarmed a lot of people in my life who know about it, but it's much simpler and logical than vanilla folks quite understand at first:

I'm constantly in pain that I don't choose to be in, so pain that I have the agency to choose is very important to me. My life is almost entirely controlled by my disease, so control that I have the agency to surrender is very important to me.

Is whump a kind of chosen pain? Is that why I can't write fluff anymore? Is that the reason I can barely tolerate fluff unless it's counterbalanced by whump? Is that why the parameters and boundaries of the genre are so important to me? Is that why I take such exception to people incorrectly tagging their hurt/comfort as whump? Maybe

Is my exponentially increased interest in horror, and my recent embrace of exploitation and extreme cinema, related to this? Is my dedication to woman's revenge as a subgenre about the theme of agency in the face of pain? Am I searching for narratives that don't shy away from honest depictions of pain, no matter what the context is? Is this the underlying reason that I'm in this goddamn fucking situationship with Ruggero Deodato's work? Maybe
