Paul McCartney, photographed by Barry Lategan for Observer magazine, July 1968
October, 1979 (Dakota, New York): After celebrating Sean’s fourth birthday, John sits with Sean in the kitchen and explains the mechanics of time and growing older. (Note: Max was the son of one of John and Yoko’s neighbours in the Dakota building; he was also toddler-Sean’s best friend at the time.)
SEAN: Maxie went to my birthday too, so he’s four, just like me.
JOHN: Mmhmm. I understand what you’re saying.
SEAN: ‘Kay?
JOHN: Yeah. But – he doesn’t become the same age as you just because he goes to your birthday party. You see? Because he was already four when he went to your birthday party. When you woke up that morning – the night before you were four, you were only three. So you were only three that one day. At your birthday party you were four, but that was the first day you were four – that day of your birthday party. But Max had already been four for – I don’t know, quite a few months, I don’t know how much older he is. You see, size isn’t age. You can be as tall as me, maybe, but you could still be four. [laughs] Not really, but uh – you know? So you can be – maybe you’ll meet somebody, a little child that was taller than you, and was only three! You never know. People are all different sizes.
You’ll be five next year, on October the 9th, the same day that I’ll be forty next year. There’s nothing I can do to get to be forty quicker. I have to be thirty-nine for one whole year. And you have to be four for a whole year. You can’t rush it.
SEAN: I’m waiting. I wanted to be four.
JOHN: Well, you are four! And next, you’re going to be five.
SEAN: That’s why I wanted to go to someone else’s birthday, and be four so quickly!
JOHN: But you can’t, you see. You have to be each number for a whole year. And a year is three hundred and sixty-five days. That’s how long a year is – three-hundred and sixty-five days.
SEAN: Oh.
JOHN: Mmhmm.
SEAN: Well, I love you.
JOHN: I love you too, sweetheart.

Three pitch perfect puns. A fucking hat trick. The Simone Biles triple backflip of front pages. New York Post knew they were gonna be in the history books for this one and they gave it everything they had. Beautiful. I love journalism.
Sometimes you just have to remember that these were the two school besties who thought they could build a guitar from scratch, hitchhiked to Wales together, and were bonded by Jimmy and Jemima’s untimely end.
