Okay but imagine someone had spent their entire life painstakingly cataloguing 'good' and 'bad' things, what is appropriate to say to someone vs what's not, carefully studying the reactions and expressions of others, and just genuinely devoting themselves to being a 'good person'.

Then imagine that person suddenly thrown into another world with an entirely new set of societal expectations and moral rulings, resulting in them having to start from scratch.
