women’s pro baseball begins one week from today. it’s the first time in over 70 years that there has been a women’s pro baseball league here in the u.s.

the inaugural season will take place entirely at Robin Roberts Stadium in Illinois, and will have four teams:

the Boston Hunters, named after Dr Harriot Hunt, one of the first women in the u.s. to practice medicine

the Los Angeles Queens, named after Lizzie “the queen of baseball” Murphy, the first woman to play against major league baseball players

the New York Heights, named after Dorothy Height, an activist for Black civil rights and women’s rights

the San Francisco Firebells, named after Lillie “Firebell Lil” Hitchcock Coit, who worked with San Francisco’s volunteer firefighters
