after months of worshipping the ground Pet Sounds walks on, ungodly anounts of research into their history as a band, and dipping my toes into every album through a couple songs, i’m finally gonna listen to the rest if the Beach Boy’s discography. i’m starting with all the albums i’ve heard are the best of the post-Pet-Sounds career and what intrigue me the most, which includes:
SMiLE Sessions (1967/2011) (i may also listen to Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE after)
Smiley Smile (1967)
Wild Honey (1967)
Friends (1968)
Sunflower (1970)
Surf’s Up (1971)
Holland (1973)
i’ve heard at LEAST one song from each of these albums already to know i’m interested and these seem to be the albums people talk about the most positively (excluding Holland, but two music commentators i respect really enjoy it so i’m giving it a shot, and Friends, which nobody talks about but once again one lf those music reviewers thinks its very underrated so we’ll see)
I’m most familiar with Surf’s Up, just haven’t listened in order but the title track is one of my favourites they ever made (and another reason i’m so excited for SMiLE specifically) and i’m least familiar with both Friends and Holland so it’ll be interesting.
if you think i should add a different album to the list, please let me know!! i haven’t added much pre-Pet-Sounds music because frankly it interests me a bit less but i know of some beautiful gems earlier on if its worth checking out beyond just listening to the Endless Summer compilation and the songs i already know.
