Am I happy Watcher rolled back their plan and apologized? Yes. Have I still lost any desire to watch their videos? Yes. Do I think people are being too harsh towards Steven, singling him out and such? Yes. Do I think Steven and Andrew bringing back worth it in the middle of a global cost of living crisis is extremely out of touch? Yes.

All of these things can coexist. Feelings towards the situation can be complex. It happens.

I am just. So weirdly tickled by this Watcher situation. Like yes, initially I was very disappointed and upset but honestly now I just think it's funny. I can't remember the last time a creator or group of creators misread the room this hard. Like they really thought they were cooking with this one. They had a countdown to this. They announced their paywalled streaming service with their whole chests and expected rapturous applause. Instead, there has been a non-stop chorus of boos and thrown tomatoes for days now. They would have probably gotten a better reaction if they had posted a video where they sprayed a dog in the eyes with soapy water.

It's all so pleasantly... low-stakes. The consequences are nonexistent. It's not like the Ned Fulmer situation, where a friend group is destroyed, real life relationships are ended, and young children are potentially subjected to the trauma of divorce. Nah, all that's happening here is three idiots will be making a lot less money than they wanted. Maybe they'll learn something, maybe they won't. Either way, they brought it entirely upon themselves, and that makes it okay to laugh at in my books. So I will!

watcher backtracking and making their content free again

I'm surprisingly super cool with the update response Watcher made. I think what was really being lost in the conversation is that they wanted to create content that was free from advertiser influence. If you watch a lot of YouTube essayists or TikToks, you know that people talk in round about ways to get points across (unalive myself, SA, r*pe) because they can get demonitized for not doing so.

The way they handled it with initially putting everything behind a pay wall to oh no not everything just new content but Patrons will still have to pay full price for a subscription to WatcherTV and also saying the price was one everyone could afford was out of touch and rightfully upset a lot of people. But I understand them wanting to create content that wasn't beholden to advertisers.

I think they took a lot of responsibility and self-reflection and I'm pretty happy with their response. These changes to the model should be much more sustainable and make more people willing to sign up. I am cautiously optimistic.

I’m glad they addressed our concerns and our outrage appropriately; I know this had to have been a stressful 48 hours, but I would highly encourage going forward that they consult better business professionals when making decisions. It’s about the education, degree or no degree.

Running a business means you need to be educated on how a business can successfully and efficiently operate, and most importantly, how to scale your business at a rate that is consistent and sustainable. Accounting, marketing, social media marketing, public relations, production, etc; these resources and internet of things is available and at your disposal. If they had invested more time in educating themselves on those aspects they not made this decision based on artistic passion, you would have not gotten the response they got.

And I’m a graphic designer; I know the creative/passionate side of things but I also got a degree/got educated in business because I wanted to understand how to start a company and run it successfully. If they’re having trouble handling the responsibility of doing that, managing production costs, managing overhead expenses, and especially with compensating your 25 employees, then they should hire professionals that are sympathetic to their creative interests, but have the education and experience to reign in bad decisions like these.

the watcher update/apology thing is good but the whole situation is just so funny that i almost can't take it seriously. like just the contrast between the super high-production 14 minutes laying out the details of this genius master plan and then 2 days later- guys we are so sorry we're taking it all back. like i respect them a lot for handling it this way, i genuinely did not think after the tone of that video & the 2-day silence that they would walk back anything at all, i figured they had just decided even if it made everyone hate them it would make them more money and that was worth it, but the whole situation is kind of comic i have to admit.

Ok this is genuinely not ok anymore, I understand people are upset but it is NEVER OKAY to bully and harass someone just bc u disagree with a decision they've made.

People have been flooding the comments of Ryan Bergara's wedding photos on Instagram with hate, booing both of them and telling him she's gonna leave him when he goes broke from his stupid business decision. ITS FINE TO NOT LIKE WATCHERTV. ITS FINE TO NOT SUBSCRIBE. but it's not ok to completely dehumanize, other, and harass them. I've seen people telling Shane and Ryan to kill themselves. That is Not Fucking Okay. They are STILL HUMAN BEINGS. NOT UNTOUCHABLE 1 PERCENTERS.

I know cyberbullying and harassment is normal these days but it's not fucking okay. Not a watcher fan but the way some people are like “artist deserve to be paid for their work!” About the situation is crazy. They were being paid already, they had a crazy amount of patrons and they had expensive merch that would sell out quickly.
