In my experience, horror fans are by and large lovely people with a very healthy relationship to their genre of choice, but sometimes they fuck up and say something that in their ears sounds very affirmative of the movie of discussion and to everyone else sounds like the most sinister shit.
I mean the line that I think of first is “A kid dies in this movie.”
Which I suspect to horror fans is shorthand for “The director of this movie subverts horror tropes (wherein kids are usually immune to the monster/slasher/source of terror) to make something that is deliberately shocking. Seeing a child character die in this story is not a happy thing or a good thing, but for a horror story emphasizes that nobody is immune to the source of the terror, which makes the horror more serious and scarier.”
And to everybody else just sounds like “Oh this movie’s great! A kid dies in it!”
Buckle up bitches, I'm gonna share my thoughts on the Newest Halloween movie whether you want them or not.
Posting a SPOILER WARNING HERE because I'll be discussing the end and much of what happens in the movie. If you haven't seen it, I don't wanna spoil it fot you, But if you read it past this point, that's on you.
First I wanna say, I did throughly enjoy the movie, and I have seen opinions from both Ends. I personally didn't think it was terrible but I do feel that it could have been executed better
Firstly it wasn't consistent with Halloween as I personally know it. I've seen the Originals and the modern ones, and while it's not my favorite horror franchise, I am familiar with it to a degree.
Micheal Meyers has always been solitary. He works alone, always has. I would have liked to see more context as to why he didn't kill Corey when he saw him like he does literally anyone else.
Typically if you survive a Meyers encounter it's because you got away somehow, not because he let you. I would've like more context as to why Corey was suddenly different, but that will never happen, I honestly feel like blumhouse just wanted to throw a fresh face in there because why not? But it didn't make sense if we're going off the fact that it's Halloween.
My friend feels like what they did with Laurie was backwards, having her be super paranoid and stuff in other movies and this one she's trying to heal, and I get that thought. However there's no doubt that Laurie has PTSD and when she saw Corey standing there like he was, it triggered it and she just kinda... spiraled from there.
Also the reference Micheal Meyers... being brain damaged (I don't recall this ever being mentioned before in previous movies) and some.. expanding on that would have been nice because from what I remember he was seen my a therapist or a Psyciatrist as a child who insisted he was the devil incarnate and no one did anything for him ever except demonize him. I have no doubt he had something going on but if I recall correctly this is the first time someone mentions him being brain damaged instead of just plain evil or even mentally ill.
Expanding on the other part of it with Corey and Allison (I know I spelled it wrong) I loved it. I loved Corey's character and I loved his development. I loved seeing him go from being this timid Lil guy to being more... meticulous and bold. I love how we get to see how smart this man actually is at the end of the movie
I think Corey's part of this movie would have been FANTASTIC on its own. Still able to make a play on what happened and how he was swayed to the "dark side" (so to speak) meeting a killer, who's has decided to show him the ropes or whatever. I think they could have done this without riding on the "Halloween" part. I feel like Micheal Meyers working with someone is just out of character with the Micheal Meyers we've seen until now.
I feel like if it wasn't for the Corey part of the movie, the ending of it would have hit much differently with them parading Micheal around. I do feel like the way he died was a little lackluster for Micheal given all the stuff he's survived, but the whole showing all of Haddonfield he's actually dead is a good fit for the end of his legacy since he's terrorized that town for years.
I think, personally, Blumhouse should have dived balls deep into the Halloween aspect of it without Corey's story to it, because in my opinion that would have made more sense, then taken Corey's story and maybe made and seperate film with that. I wouldn't even mind some Halloween references in it, but I don't think Micheal Meyers should really have been in it at all.
To me the film didn't feel like a Halloween film. It felt like Blumhouse rode of the popularity of the Halloween franchise and off Micheal Meyers more than anything considering Corey killed more people than Micheal and was more the focus of the film than Micheal (aside from Meyers being mentioned a few times)
I think Micheal should have been more the focus of the film since they were bringing his reign of Terror on Haddonfeild to an end, and while I Like Corey as a character A LOT him having been a Meyers wannabe that in all honesty should have been killed by Meyers sooner or maybe not in the film at all.
All the stuff with Corey (in my opinion) would have been better as it's own film, and I think the way his story ended would have been a great ending to that film, and the end to Micheal Meyers would have hit better without it.
Still a great movie, I still liked it, I still enjoyed watching it, and I enjoyed Corey and his character. But it still felt like two different films mushed together.
I'm gonna talk about my thoughts on Halloween Ends, (I'm very quiet so idek who will see it) but it might be a while because i have a lot of feelings and I want to try and make them as coherent as possible. So *fingerguns* if anyone cares to read My opinions and criticisms of the movie you have that to look forward to on this, neglected little blog of mine.
Watched the most recent Halloween woth @mlmdarkfiction
I certainly have.... thoughts.
I didn't hate it, I actually liked it a lot but... I feel like if they'd done some things differently, it would've been a little more true to the franchise as I know it anyway.
Seth was originally seen as a perfect pick by the Producers for the Sunny Time Crew, he was straight edge, had a religious upbringing, and was at the time, generally considered to be an attractive 'woman'.
Although his character Sarah was never a main cast member, more often in the background, occasionally having speaking roles, or an occasional episodes where she's more present, she was still a fan favorite with kids, especially little girls.
It was at the height of the shows popularity when Seth 'came out' as trans. Originally Seth only told one of his fellow actors on the show, who then let it slip to a producer. Seth was almost fired, but due to his character's popularity was put on a special contract solely for the purpose of not embarrassing the show, or ruining it's image.
This was fine with Seth at first, but eventually began to become incredibly draining as his transition started.
Seth also became incredibly paranoid about violating his contract, and being fired from the show, or even worse, sued. It got so bad he stopped leaving his house in fear that someone would see him out, and recognize him. During this time it was said he only left for filming, media appearances, and to hang out with his fellow actors. It's also rumored that while this was going on Seth had become addicted to drugs and alcohol, although there was speculation about who got the previously straight edge actor addicted (Joseph), there was never any proof, and Seth never said anything to confirm or deny the speculations about his addiction.
When Seth eventually went missing, no one really took it seriously. Producers believed he'd ran away in an attempt to flee his contract, and by the time his fellow actors and friends filed a missing persons report, there was already nothing left to find of the missing actor.

You just wanted to lay with Vincent in the dark and forget about the world. No, more than that... oh, more than that, you wanted to lay down with Vincent in the dark and the warm, to feel those strong arms around you, that broad chest pressed up against you, those dark locks you loved to brush out intermingling with your own colour until it combined into a soft kaleidoscope and you couldn't tell your hair from his, your limbs from his.
You wanted to sink into Vincent and never resurface.
All of your thoughts of him were safe inside you, just as all of his thoughts of you were safe within Vincent, too. Your love for one another kept you both safe, kept you alive and well within the decaying confines of Ambrose, just as much a graveyard was it for the living as well as for the deceased.
With so much work to do and nothing left to say, you almost staggered your way down the wax encased stairs which led to Vincent's basement. The golden glow of the hundreds of the candles which were strategically placed along the walls of the staircase cast long black, distorted shadows which flickered almost in sync with the many little flames. The heat grew stronger and stronger with every pace and it matched the heat within you, the burning for Vincent and for everything he was to you.
Soft notes of the opera Vincent was listening to drifted across the walls and filtered into your ears, caressing your mind and soothing the screaming within you from the inside out, so calming was the effect which Vincent and the things you associated with him had on you.
In a haze of love and want did you finally reach the bottom step and you stood there for a time marked only by the roaring in your head and the slightly uneven breathing which was coming from you, logically you knew, but it sounded like it originated from someone stood beside you; you were beginning to fall outside of yourself. If you were lost at sea, then Vincent was your anchor.
You were ripped out of your silent reverie by the sound of footsteps; worn boots on a wax covered floor which approached you with confidence. A wax encrusted hand came into view and with tender firmness did a thumb and forefinger tilt your chin up until your dark eyes met Vincent's solo blue one. The question in his eye was obvious but you didn't know how to answer him. How could you, when your words had run dry just as your tears always ended up doing, and you knew not how to vocalise that which followed you every moment of every day?
Vincent huffed and you smiled. It was an unhappy gesture, one tinged with desperation for something more, something new, something different to this. "Yeah, I don't know what I need, either."
Vincent shook his head and held his hands palm up in front of you to get your attention before he moved with certainty, his hands so firm in their gestures that you heard him in a clipped tone. "I know what my boyfriend needs. Cuddles. Touch. Warmth. To forget." As Vincent finished off his small but oh, so important list, his hand slipped into yours and he tugged you deeper and deeper into his basement. It reminded you of the Phantom of the Opera for just a split second; a tall, dark man with a mask leading the one he loved down a dark, candlelit hallway, but you shook the thought off. You, for once, for once, had a moment in reality which was better than your dreams and you wanted to savour it.
Jonesy, the sweet girl, was sprawled across the bed, and Vincent held his right hand over the left side of his body and moved it through the air like a hot knife through butter. Jonesy grumbled but she moved to the foot of the bed, and Vincent patted her head affectionately as the both of you laid down and got comfortable. Jonesy shuffled around some more and ended up resting her head on Vincent's ankle. The man huffed in content to have his dog and his partner with him on the same bed, occupying the same space.
"Come here," Vincent's hands were sluggish now, as if every word was an effort, and you realised that he was just as tired in all ways as you were, and like a moth to a flame were you drawn to one another. In this scenario, you were both the moth and the flame alike; the darknesses in you answered the other's call until all that remained was a beam of light, bringing the both of you together and keeping you there, side by side where arguably did you belong.
You smiled and shuffled over to Vincent, who wrapped you up in his arms and huffed a breath deliberately against your hair. He meant, "closer".
"Vin, honey, I can't get much clo - "
Vincent shook his head and simultaneously tugged you into him and pushed himself into you until you practically collided into one another. Not a sheet of paper could have come between your bodies and you cherished the way every part of Vincent was pressed against every part of you. Your fingers played with the seam of his mask but you didn't remove it, seeing that to be an act of physical assault if it was without his permission. Vincent sensed your thoughts, as it seemed he always did, and he nodded. Just once - decisiveness.
You lifted the mask carefully, slowly, presenting Vincent with every opportunity to change his mind, but he didn't. He didn't.
As his beautiful scarred visage came full into view, the concaved parts of his forehead seeming deeper due to the way the candles played with the shadows, you smiled with a heart full of love. "There you are." The fondness in your voice, oh, but it sent Vincent's heart aflutter and he blushed, pushing forward until his face was burrowed in the crook of your neck, his lips pressing once, twice, thrice against where your heart beats could be felt through your skin. It was an, "I love you".
You nestled into Vincent, wrapped your arms tight around him, and he pressed a kiss to your forehead, the outline of his teeth against his lips from the sheer tender force of his affection towards you, his Y/N. Jonesy made a small noise and shuffled further up the bed until she rested against Vincent's knee, one of her paws draped over to touch your leg, too, and you reached across Vincent to stroke her head.
"Love you so much, Vin."
An 'mmff' was all you got out of your boyfriend, but you heard everything he said and everything he didn't. Vincent always did his best to give you what you wanted, what you most needed, and most of the time he did it without even realising it. The warmth of him and the many candles which scattered around the basement, the true weight of his body, the softness of his lips, the depth of the love you held for one another...
... The screaming within you had quieted just enough that you didn't even notice it start to fade away.
