Mind vs. Heart: an analysis

Something I just realized: JUST1C3 is a Mind thing.

(And not just a Pyrope thing.)

Because Mind is about the choices that a particular iteration of the individual decided to make, and holding that individual accountable for their actions.

Terezi’s character arc is basically her struggle with killing Vriska. And given the actions Vriska has taken, killing her was definitely the just thing to do. The Mind thing to do. But she struggled with that because...of who Vriska could have been, what Vriska could have done.

The way I see it, a character’s assignment in an aspect pair describes something they are comfortable with, as how they view the aspect pair as being. Then, their character arc deals with them struggling with, and coming to terms with how their aspect can be seen from the opposite direction, and then maybe gaining what could possibly be called mastery.

In contrast to Mind, Heart

is about who the person is in essence and could have done in other iterations, and so Heart is the aspect that is about forgiveness. It’s about doing what is true to yourself no matter the outside circumstances - because those are arbitrary - and Dirk and Nepeta are both very idiosyncratic people.

And because they see what a person could have been, they tend to see the best in a person.

I think Dirk’s attraction to Jake can be seen that way as well, as Dirk seeing the potential in Jake.

But this is also why Dirk might not have been the best person, morality wise. And Nepeta too, if you want to judge her that way.

Heart is how we can recognize Dirk and Bro as people who essentially think the same, and that Bro is what Dirk would have done had he grown up like Bro.

Heart is how we can recognize Meenah and the Condesce as people who essentially think that same, and that the Condesce is what Meenah would have done had she grown up like the Condesce.

This is the reason why we can feel that it was just that the Condesce has died, and still mourn her death.

It’s funny - Roxy and Dave were the ones who were actually able to take down their bosses.

Oh, and Jake and Karkat, I guess. I guess.

And PM, although the story was not necessarily told from her perspective...

Something I just noticed: the sparks that fly off when attacks are made during boss battles. Blue for good guys, red for bad guys.

Condesce is a bad guy, fighting good guys. Jacks are bad guys, fighting good guys. The felt are bad guys, fighting good guys. PM is a good guy, Bec Noir is a bad guy. Lord English is a bad guy, fighting good guys. Caliborn is a bad guy, Yaldabaoth is a good guy. Vriska is a good guy, Andrew Hussie is a bad guy.

Something that changes, though, in the “Heir of Grief” segment - the attacks no longer give off sparks. The damage is physical. Gamzee is crying. It humanizes the violence.

The flash starts off all grand and majestic - Karkat is the first to rise, and the first to die. But he’s in a video game, where death means you wake up, go back to the last save point and try again.

By the end, though, the violence is real, the death is real, not just some points on a scoreboard. It is a pretty sad flash.

From thinking about Redglare being a legislacerator and an agent of the regime, while also being a Signless follower. Deciding that she would achieve her aims from inside the regime, than from outside it.

Aradia: fights LE (starts fighting in defence of Tavros! how fitting) (laughs at him, tries to dominates him - Megido is always and will forever be the dominatrix, the waifu, and hentai)

Tavros: valiantly fights LE, but mostly gets bullied

Sollux: shows up in the beginning, and...? (Condesce’s laser eye beams?)

Karkat: tries to lead battle against Lord English, triumphantly defeats four-leaf clover

Davepetasprite: Davepeta is precious and unique and has a force of personality that would never be brought down. Davepeta is the quirky Undertale that accepts all things weird. Davepeta can almost, but not quite, dodge all the bullets LE shoots at them. But Davepeta will never be broken. <3

Kanaya: fights Condesce

Terezi: fights two jacks (her two swords are Dave and Dirk)

Vriska: fights Andrew Hussie - how fitting. spends all her time fighting over how things look, when she could be doing things much more important.

ARquiusprite: fights felt (beats up kool-aid man with Gamzee fridge, gets saved(?) by Dad). his shocked face while the tower crumbles cannot help but make me think that the tower is a phallic symbol

Gamzee: cries in fridge

Ampora: no one cares. (Erisolsprite is nowhere to be seen, probably still moping)

Meenah/Condesce: Meenah fights LE. Condesce also wants to take down LE, but is being a battle boss instead. Chokes her heiress

John: fights Condesce

Rose: fights Condesce

Dave: fights jacks; beheads jacks and Dirk; is the hero

Jade: plays with her dogs, and is reprimanded for doing so

Jane: goes around healing, is choked by Condesce

Dirk: fights jack; trapped by jacks and beheaded by Dave; is the villain

Roxy: stabs Condesce like Terezi stabbed Vriska

Jake: triumphantly defeats felt

Dad: dukes it out vs. kool-aid man

Lord English: internet manchild

Also, to summarize the boss battles:

two “female” battles - dogs, condy

two “male” battles - jacks, felt

the dual battles of Lord English vs. Ghost Army, Yaldabaoth vs. Caliborn

and to counterbalance that - Calliope, Mayor, and Serenity! as well as whatever yoda Calliope is up to.

A while ago, I drew Vriska crying. At that time, I drew it thinking that, when I posted it to tumblr, I’d caption it with a blurb about how we haven’t seen Vriska cry yet.

I didn’t think we’d see Vriska cry. But I did think that if we saw Vriska cry, she’d cry horribly.

Huh, I actually have a “Homestuck Alchemist” AU idea where the trolls are the humans and the kids are the Homunculi. Envy is Jane, and Lust is Roxy. Jane/Roxy is not very rare. (Haha yeah sorry I meant only Homestuck. Go find Jane/Roxy and pretend it’s Envy/Lust?)
