On TOP of the world - "Arch"
I am not a serious reader / learner but whenever I read (my interests are reading history, interesting facts, stories behind personalities, anything that has a interesting history) I have a habit of knowing the meaning of the words that is unusual or even a word that is commonly used, I tend to ponder on those words which leads to a fascinating history or word origin.
I have been learning these word history quite some time but last few weeks I was thinking that I need to document these learning so I can make use of it or I can amuse my friends with this. And then it strikes me to write a blog so it can even reach the world (hopefully).
So, here I am trying to amuse and charm you with words that I am learning and if you have other interesting history on the words which I dissect, please share it with us and the world benefits!!
My intention to write this blog is not only it serves me but also the learning community around the globe. If you gain something from this, that is what my ultimate aim of this blog.
As you can see on the right hand side of the blog's window, the word Archive
As many of us know the literal meaning of this word Archive
A collection of older things - documents, books, movies, etc. and it tells us about history
When I start checking on its word origin it is derived from Archon from Greek meaning ruler or chief. You may ask, how it relates to Archive where the meaning is completely different. So here is some light on it.
In ancient Greece, an Archon has the authority and rules the house in which important official state documents are filed and interpreted.
So you guess how Archive links to Archon. So simply archival or historical records can be seen in that house which is used for interpretation and analysis.
So Arch (ruler) and we see many words originates from this
(a construction/structure, a shape resembles an upside down "U" - a tall structure where we mostly tilt our head up and see - so basically high, top - you see the link - rank/level
(Mono - single, one and Arch - ruler/chief) - Queen of England
(Hiereus - priest and Arch - ruler) - From Greek originally, priest is the highest rank and comes rest of us.
Archbishop (a bishop of highest rank)
Architect (chief builder)
Archery (Nowadays it is just a sport with a bow and an arrow but in those days, originally a way for people to hunt for food or defend themselves from enemies. Latin root "arcus", or "bow.")
Arc (students studying geometry, very well knows what is an "arc" and now they see its root.)
And now the word Archeology (arch - ruler/king who are now history and ancient times and logy which is from Greek "logia" meaning "study of" so put together, study of ancient, pre-historic stuffs, simply put, learning about the pre-historic people and their culture.
I guess you now relate Archive and Archeologist (someone who studies history)
Well, though you see Archive in my blog (you cannot find any history right now ;) ) eventually, you will see archival records where you can study and gain something from it!
I hope you enjoyed learning few words in this blog, please share/comment if you find interesting words that originate from "Arch" and share it with us so we strengthen our vocabulary!!
