I watched Bells Hells and finished the finale right when Gomens 3 dropped and fuck was it WILD to be around both at once.

(*If you dont know/watch critical role I dont think I talk about anything that needs a lot of context; there's a dnd campaign that grapples with themes of divinity VS the people that I experienced concurrently lol and want to comparatively discuss)

Because bells hells spends their campaign grappling with Divinity as a source of oppression and authoritarianism. "Should any being with the power of a god be permitted to exist?" Throughout the campaign it had been treated as a power structure that they could think about dismantling if they chose, and we had like... hundreds of hours of content of the characters debating every angle of doing so. Religion is an important source of culture and comfort how can we take that from people, what happens to souls if there is no divinity to guide them, how does the natural order of the world come into play, we don't know if the thing currently threatening the gods is also a threat to humans and animals so what happens if we just set it loose on everyone, in what ways will humanity be allowed to thrive without the boot of all powerful beings on their necks.

On and on they grappled with the immense implications of removing divinity entirely from their planet, and came to a compromise not completely dissimilar - the gods could either throw themselves at the mercy of the thing that would destroy them, or they could choose to continue to be guardians of their children and walk among them as mortals in an ATLA-style cycle of reincarnation. The gods chose reincarnation

And then - because I haven't watched the finale, I've just had a lot of conversations with fandom friends - I hear that gomens basically had the opportunity to go on the same journey and almost entirely flubbed it lol. CR almost told a more Terry story than GO did. Imagine if that had been the ending of gomens too. Magic isn't gone, it's just no longer hoarded in ivory towers by the divine. They remember past lives every time they are reborn and find their way to one another, serving and protecting humanity with their magic, under the boot of no god that turned from her children?

Again. Wild that I got to experience the bell's hells finale grappling with almost the exact same themes on the day gomens was released.

Twurp’s Peerage made me throw a book (gently) at a wall.

In the UK, the book of the peerage is called Burke’s Peerage. Burke sounds like berk, which means a silly/annoying person. So Terry took ‘twerp’, another word for a silly or annoying person, and replaced the e with u. 

The Book of Silly and Annoying People, based on the real thing with a pun on the name thrown in for good measure.

In Carpe Jugulum, Count Magpyr boasts of having helped write the Malleus Maleficarum, along with the Torquus Simiae Maleficarum, the Auriga Clavium Maleficarum, and in fact the entire Arca Instrumentorum.

The Malleus Maleficarum is a very real, very nasty and absolutely batshit insane book from late 15th-century Germany, basically laying out the procedure for catching, torturing, and executing witches. Its title translates to The Hammer of Witches. The other titles are Pratchett's inventions.

A new trend is starting to appear in AO3 comments: impersonation of known writers in certain fandoms to write extremely mean comments.

The username is going to appear as such:

This, for example, is a member of Good Omens After Dark, who we know and love and can absolutely ENSURE would never post something as nasty as the bot I'm showing here has posted. That, as it was brought to our attention, made it very obvious to us that something new had appeared on AO3.

All the known writers you all respect and love have a registered account on AO3: please consider this fact when you see such a comment by an account whose name you might recognise.

No self-respecting writer posting on AO3 would post the nasty things that we're seeing floating around posted by those new types of bots

And they would certainly not go through the trouble of leaving that comment with their actual account name as a Guest name.

Report and block, and please stay safe. Do not engage with those accounts, they are entirely meant to discourage you and to make you delete your works.

If you do believe that you are being treated very unfairly by a GOAD member however, never hesitate to report it to the GOAD mods, as that is not the type of behaviour that we accept from our members.
