On 6 November 2024, I edited this post to say the following: "It looks like the United States will be officially running under Project 2025 within the next few months. Naturism is not pornography but Project 2025 will classify it as such; it will be illegal to depict or discuss it on US-based websites, including this one, by this time next year."

Clearly this has not come to pass. There have been definite indications that the US is trending this way, as are other places, but a prediction without a timeframe isn't much of a prediction (since you can always say "no it just hasn't happened yet"), and within the time limit I specified, my prediction was wrong.

Things you need to know about me:

(1) I'm a naturist, and I will from time to time reblog images of nonsexual nudity if I feel like they make an important point. As of 6 May 2025 I am no longer reblogging multiple nude photos every day, as my goal was to desexualize nudity through repeated exposure and it's become clear that's not working. If you want to complain about this, find one of the thousands of porn bloggers I've had to block for ignoring my stated boundaries and go shout at them. Nude images will always be tagged #nude photo or #nude art, so those are the tags to filter if you don't want to see them.

(2) I don't give money to random strangers on the internet, and I don't pass on their requests to anyone else, ever, for any reason. Distinguishing genuine actors from predators is more work than I have the spoons for, and I'm not going to be party to some scammer stealing people's money. If you tag me or message me with requests for money, or reblog or comment on my posts with requests for money, I will block you and report you for spam. No exceptions.

(3) Occasionally I make art and put it on tumblr; that will be under the tag #nochd original. Likes are nice, reblogs are better.

(4) If you are a QAnon believer, a climate change denialist, an anti-vaxxer, a transphobe, or a Trumpist, don't waste your time following me; I will just block you. There was a time when I followed up internet arguments to the bitter end, but I don't do that any more, because lying awake all night thinking up replies that would force people to listen was harming my mental health.

(5) I vote Left, but I don't believe in violent revolution. Nor do I believe that the solution to any of the wars and conflicts troubling the world is for the side that isn't aligned with the US to murder the side that is (any more than vice versa). Nor do I believe, as distressingly many Leftists apparently do, that being spiteful to one's opponents on social media counts as praxis. Don't expect me to cheer on any of these ideas.

in new zealand, our evil government are trying to legislate definitions of women and men, in ways that are legally incoherent but clearly trying to pave the way for more horrifically transphobic legislation. we have an election in a few months but our main opposition party, and all our mainstream news media, are so spineless and cooked that there's a good chance the ghouls will win reelection.

it took 2 whole months for local terf group 'speak up for women' to get 2,000 signatures on the petition that led to this new bill in our parliament.

it's taken five days for this pro-trans 'they don't speak for us' petition to get 17,000 signatures.

this is a show of support that is really heartening for a lot of trans people in our corner of the world.

cis/ish women, if you're from here but haven't signed yet, please do. and if you're not from here and you know any new zealanders, could you send them this petition? a full fifth of our population lives overseas, and there's a good chance they don't follow the news.

Honestly, having grown up with this bullshit is probably a big part of the reason I'm fascinated with player-hostile game design. Giving a puzzle three different solutions with fully voiced and animated reactions to each, except two of those solutions render the game unwinnable in ways that won't become apparent until hours later is a level of "fuck you" that most modern games with pretensions of player-hostility can only dream of!

A critical piece of context that a lot of modern gamers completely miss is that Douglas Adams' adventure games are works of parody not only in terms of their narratives, but also in the sense that they're rather vicious parodies of adventure games as a genre. Each of their absurdly obtuse puzzles is lampooning some puzzle design trope or set of tropes that was legitimately commonplace at the time they were made, and many of the really nasty bits are crafted specifically to piss off experienced adventure game fans who otherwise wouldn't get caught out by that sort of thing. They're outliers in the genre only in the sense that they're putting forth extra effort to be annoying about it – most games of the type pull the exact same shit entirely without remark!

In the part of the world where I live, Mormons are not an especially white group; a very high proportion of Mormons in Aotearoa are Māori or Pasifika. The story is that shortly before his death in 1881, a Māori prophet named Pāora Te Potangaroa prophesied the coming of a new church for the Māori people, and then in 1882 the Mormons officially sent a mission to his iwi, and many people saw that as the fulfilment of the prophecy.

Also possibly relevant is the fact that the Mormons had no connection to the British, whose relations with Māori by that point were soured by decades of land theft and war; plus the fact that they were more interested in learning Māori genealogies (whakapapa) than in acquiring Māori land, which set them in contrast to the established churches.

There exists -- though I haven't been able to find reference to it recently -- at least one memorial in Salt Lake City to a Māori prophet or church leader.

Even if darkness is one of the things your story has to be realistic about (every story is realistic about some things and unrealistic about others), making your night scene as dark as actual night is not going to have the same effect on the audience's eyes as it's supposed to be having on the characters', for two reasons:

Your audience, unlike your characters, are watching a show or movie, which had a lit-up scene just seconds ago;

Other than cinema audiences when your movie is new, most of your audience are watching it on a screen in a lighted room.

Your characters are actually in the dark and have been in the dark for some time, under which circumstances their eyes should have adjusted to the darkness. Your audience's eyes, due to the above two points, cannot adjust to the darkness. Your job is to find a light level which will make your scene look, to an audience whose eyes haven't adjusted, the way real darkness looks to people whose eyes have adjusted.

i know folks are gonna call me a pedo for this one, but i grew up seeing my mom and grandma naked. they had health issues and at times needed care and help showering. and i truly think more kids need to be shown the nonsexual reality of naked women at a young age. there is nothing sexual about my grandmothers breasts, they were simply body parts. more women die of heart attacks because people are too afraid of breasts to do real chest compressions, because they are scared to touch their breasts. the sexualization of our bodies literally kills us. i need people to be more normal about naked bodies and i'm 100% serious.
