“I Can’t. There’s too many. I can’t save everyone. I can’t save anyone”

This line seems to indicate that Jon has given up on being the good guy. Every avatar he’s come across has made sure that he knows that he caused this, made sure he knew what he had done. Each encounter has shown him just how similar he is to all the other avatars, and it’s taking it’s toll on him.

Even before this he has been told over and over again that he’s just like the rest of them. This was especially true with Helen who made a point to make sure Jon knew that they weren’t really so different. Helen is an excellent character to compare Jon to as her evolution is similar to Jon’s, even if Jon’s has taken much longer. 

Specifically in MAG152, when she’s speaking to Jon about why she stopped feeling bad about taking her victims, you can see just how similar they really have become. 

She says: “Helen was like you at first. She felt such guilt overtaking people, until one day she realized she wasn’t going to stop doing it. So she chose to stop feeling guilty.”

This seems to be what Jon has done. He started out the apocalypse with good intentions, hoping to try to reverse what he has done. He doesn’t want to kill just for the sake of killing, so he spares Oliver Banks. 

Then we see him go after Jude for the sake of revenge. A couple episodes later, he confirms that it’s all about revenge for him, when Jared Hopworth asks him why he’s doing what he’s doing. 

I think that at this point, Jon has realised that he’s not going to stop what he’s doing. He’s reached the turning point where he’s starting to not feel so bad anymore, thereby becoming the very thing he is trying to combat. 

Martin asks him if they’re still doing good, but Jon just states that he doesn’t “know if that was ever an option.”

He’s realised that as much as he tries, he’s made to harm people, and that as much as he tries to fight it, he always ends up failing. The willingness to accept what he’s become is very reminiscent of all the other avatars we’ve encountered, and the only difference with Jon is that he has Martin to fight for. Perhaps if he can keep one person safe then it will be worth it in the end, but if/when that’s not enough anymore? 

What will be left to do but stop fighting?

the flesh could so easily have had a major guts and gore gross out vibe so it’s fun that jared hopworth’s fear generation schemes are so, idk, normal seeming. like he owned a gym, that gym just happened to turn people into fucked up frankenstein‘s gym bros. now he spends all his time gardening, the plants just happen to be made of people and feed on their deep seated discomforts with their bodies. it’s interesting that by focusing on a more existential kind of body horror the flesh ends up having a degree of depth which you wouldn’t expect from an entity that at first glance was just like “did you know there’s a skeleton inside of you? spooky, right?”
