"I'm going to need something stronger if you keep going."
Flash sat there drowning in his fourth drink, too numb the feeling of the alien tendrils squirm around him and the haunting voice that whispered in the corners of his mind. It was all becoming too much when he was bumped into making him spill some of his drink. He felt his new parasite recoil ready to fight, but instead, he just cleared his throat and rolled his chair slightly to the left. "Could you pay a little more attention next time?" His voice had little bite in it. He was too exhausted for aggression right this second.
"And here I thought I got to be the mean drunk."
Quentin laughed quietly to himself, glancing at the person to his right. He usually tried to avoid peoples random day to day thoughts--more so to spare his own sanity than their virtue--but sometimes a thought may as well be shouted across the room.
"Hey--you're the one thinking at the top of your lungs."
"No. Nope. Absolutely not. Get the fuck out of my head now." After Kilgrave, some things would always make her skin crawl. Jess was doing better than she had been. That didn't change the fact that she wasn't fucking with anyone in her head again. "You have five seconds."
"hi--welcome to the emporium! howcanihelpyou." the last bit rushed out of her. darcy totally hadn't been smoking in the back and barely heard the door open. not at all.
A sigh and an unimpressed look. That's all Jessica could muster. It was too early for this, and her drinking (which had evened out some) had increased once more with this whole reality shit. She was simultaneously hungover and buzzed. "This girl." The P.I. held up the printed photo taken from Instagram. "You see her recently? She was hanging around here."
"I'll allow you to keep your throat this time, but don't suggest such a thing again."
"Oh, blow me, asshole. This shit is hard enough without pricks like you pulling out your intimidation tactics."
"this is why i never come to time square--it always smells like urine and scammers keep trying to lure you into their shops."
"So why the hell did you go? Enter at your own peril, blah, blah, blah. It's a hellscape."
"I thought y'all said it gets cold here."
"Spend a few hours crouching on a fire escape and it starts to get into the bones." Thank god for the liquor jacket, right?
"First I'm in a new time period and then I'm in a new reality. I'm nervous to find out what's coming next."
Jessica knew what was coming next. A drink. Then another one. Anything to numb the torrent of feelings that threatened to overwhelm her. "You got a point, or are you just venting? I don't think I signed up to be your therapist."
"C'mon, you haven't heard that sound? Wait, you do have a tik tok, right?---don't tell me you're still on x..."
"Do I look twelve to you?"
"what is that!?"
"Whiskey. On the rocks. You unfamiliar?"
"hey, wanna hand me that first aid kit?"
A retort bubbled up on her tongue. Something sarcastic, something rude. It was her default for a litany of reasons that Jessica didn't want to get into with a therapist. Instead, she just grunted. Grunted and nudged the first aid kit over. "Do I wanna know how the other guy looks?"
@devilwithoutfear
"I'm still mad at you, asshole."
Jessica could count the number of people she cared deeply for one her hands. No matter how high she kept her walls, losing them still hurt. Deeply. Matt had been crushed under Midland Circle with his psycho ex. For all the Defenders knew, he was dead. Then, suddenly, Daredevil was just waltzing around Hell's Kitchen again. Just like that. Alive and in action. She stole one look at him, the scowl still affixed to her face.
"You could've called."
"well at least one thing remains consistent across space and time-- whether or not mind altering substances took ingestible liquid form wasn't always the case. but, surprisingly, more often than not.
"What the hell are you saying?"
