I don’t understand how on TV, people can break into homes and immediately find bank statements, passports and super important documents. If someone tried that at my place it would be “I’m sure she keeps her important stuff in her desk. No, wait, this draw is full of pens that don’t work. Aha! This box looks important! Oh, never mind. It’s full of cigarette lighters. She doesn’t even smoke!”
*I* can’t even find my own important documents in my own home half the time. If someone breaks in and instantly finds my stuff they’re hired
Robber, standing in the middle of the room: Now, if I were an anxious, possibly undiagnosed ADHD, bisexual disaster with a really bad memory, where would I put the documents?

…you catch her name?
too many people see evolution as just animals becoming better animals when the truth is that theres a species of boar that evolved to die because its tusks grow into its skull because the males with long tusks fuck the most
Yep.
And don’t forget the Irsih elk, which supposedly went extinct because its antlers were too bleeding huge for it to function, and the ladies wouldn’t bang a man if his antlers were not huge enough.
Correction: it’s not just that the ladies wouldn’t bang a man with subpar tasks.
Runaway sexual selection processes like the ones that result in huge antlers, huge tusks, or a noticeable size dimorphism between the sexes occur because sexual selection is driven by male competition and not female choice. Which is to say, stags compete amongst themselves for mating privileges and greater bulk (for males only) and huge antlers are something that impresses/intimidates/helps win against other males, it is not necessarily a trait females find desirable (as in a trait that signals good fitness).
Elk: Runaway sexual selection driven by male competition. There’s no real fitness benefit to being that huge (in fact the upkeep costs extra energy) but it helps against other males so males are noticeably bigger than females. They compete amongst each other and the females mate with whoever’s left.
Peacocks Runaway sexual selection driven by female choice. There is no size dimorphism between males and females and males don’t directly compete with each other. Instead they all try to be as fabulous as possible and the female chooses the most fabulous. Why? The handicap principle. It’s another way of saying “Look, I have this unnecessary and ostentatious tail that makes me a very visible target for predators and somehow I’m not dead yet, meaning the rest of me is also AMAZING”. And that’s attractive to females because, unlike extra bulk, it’s an honest signal of sexual fitness. (Dishonest signals are a thing, too.)
Now a fun little factoid to finish off with. Australopithecines (Hominini subtribe and likely our ancestors) had a much more pronounced sexual size dimorphism (around 50% difference, closer to certain modern apes like gorillas and orangutans) than modern humans (15% difference on average, which is actually very little in the grande scheme of things, compared to other animals). It’s quite likely that this decrease in sexual size dimorphism in the evolution of the modern hominid went hand in hand with a shift in sexual behaviour and mating choice, from a polygynous (”harem”-like) lifestyle where bulky males would compete with each other and the winner would mate with all the available females, to a more monogamous as well as female choice driven lifestyle with one-to-one bonded couples.
Probably not a coincidence, but early hominids is also when art as a practice began to emerge (you see this shift in early carvings and things like spearheads and hand axes which changed from being functional to being more clearly ornamental and pretty but impractical later on). While art has many potential evolutionary functions (e.g. as “social glue”), one possible explanation for it is that it was our equivalent of the peacock’s tail. something so ostentatious and auxiliary to basic survival needs that actually practising it and mastering it inevitably became something that would impress a potential mate (probably both female-to-male and male-to-female at this point!) and serve as a signal of sexual fitness. “Look at me juggling/dancing/carving a super tiny and refined sculpture of a mammoth, aren’t I sexy?” became the hominid equivalent of “This isn’t actually helpful to survival so the fact that I’ve had time to master this nonsense means I’ve got pretty sweet genes”. It probably helps that those early artistic practices (carving, painting, I don’t know if we technically know early hominids danced but let’s face it they inevitably did, it’s one of the most primal things a human can do) all require a good deal of coordination and control over your muscles and, much like the ridiculously elaborate mating dance of birds, it’s something you can pull off without a hitch more easily if you have good fitness (i.e. good genes, healthy, likely to have a lot of successful offspring).
Covid is not over and black lives still matter. Stop trying to "go back to normal" when shit is still happening.
Stop going on trips and going to restaurants without masks.
Keep educating yourself and protesting and calling and donating and signing petitions.
Wear a mask. End white supremacy. Defund police.
I know it's tiring but it's not over for either thing even though people are pretending it is. I know the overlap is exhausting. But be safe, social distance, and keep fighting the good fight.
