The Most Amazing Russian Honey Cake
Hello bees!
honest to god canāt stop thinking about this song about jeff bezos by philip labes (link takes you to his spotify). itās such a good example of politically driven folk music.
Lyrics:
Jeff found a genie in a bottle Who said, āI can give you anything you askā āYou can have your wishes three And a million more for free Itās unlimited, just set me to the task.ā
Well, Jeff thought a while, Said, āI want houses, āI want boats, I want fancy modern art, I want tickets to the Met, I want my own private jet, And a rocket into space just for a start.ā
Well, the genie waved her arms and made it happen His every wish bolted from the blue And folks all over town grew enamored, gathered āround To admire the man whose wishes had come true
They said, āLetās hear it for the man who has everything! By good fortune heās been set so far apart.ā āYeah, letās hear it for Jeff who has everything! āCause his wishes are only at the start.ā
Well, Jeff heard their shouts and he grew worried He said, āEverybodyās getting in my way.ā The genie smiled as before, āYouāve got a million wishes more. You can even give a bunch of them away.ā
Well, Jeff got confused and sorta quiet āTil he finally said, āI have just one wish more.ā āI am satisfied, so I wish that you would die So you cannot grant wishes anymore.ā
Well, the genieās eyes got big and sad and shiny āTil she finally said, āYour wish is my command.ā And with an effervescent sigh, she disappeared before his eyes And no wishes were ever granted there again
So, letās hear it for the man who has everything! By good fortune he has set so far apart Yeah, letās hear it for Jeff, whoās got everything! Every single fucking thing except a heart
oh how iāve missed witnessing something so funny that it requires a six person perspective in a video
It does need to be reiterated that this was Samās character - a little automaton named Fresh Cut Grass - talkin about how his creator, Dancer, had built a lot of automatons, and named them all after her favorite smells.
heās like right there

neato: a 13th-century number notation system created by european monks
this isā¦. actuallly really cool? like, this is probably the shortest number notation in existence and yeah, itās tricky to use and absolute hell for doing math with, but the ability to denote a 4-digit decimal number into a single character is just really cool as an engineer and it probably had a ton of uses back then like denoting quantities or maybe even secret code you can probably draw this on a combination lock to remember the password and people would be none the wiser
Thereās a lot of accidental anti-semitism in the world , but sometimes I come across the deliberate and malicious anti-semitism im DND and Iām just reminded that no matter how much I love this game it does not love me back and the original creators never wanted me to play it.
Todayās example is: Phylactery
In d&d:
In real life
Thatās right. they named the evil artifact that the evil undead spellcaster hides their soul in after a Jewish ceremonial object.
Actually I want to add something because the genius of this particular kind of anti-semitism is that most gentiles wonāt know what a Phylactery really is, The only people who will notice are the Jewish players. Making them instantly feel isolated, alone, and unsafe in their d&d group.
when you come across that you should at the table paralyzed wondering
Do my fellow players know this is anti-Semitic?
If they donāt know and I bring it up will they be mad at me for ruining the fun?
If they do know and I bring it up will revealing myself as Jewish be dangerous?
Itās a tactic to deliberately push Jewish people out of the game. and nobody jump up to tell me it was an accident because it fucking wasnāt. Before d&d Phylactery only had one definitionand I find it impossible that they would know the word without knowing the meaning. Or at least knowing it was Jewish.
Iām just going to point out that phylactery, contrary to what OP says, has several meanings. The proper word for the boxes worn by observant Jews is Tefillin. If you go to Wikitionary, youāll see this.
Phylactery is merely the word applied to Tefillin by English-speaking Gentiles, and it literally just meansĀ āamuletā. Now we can have a whole another conversation about whether that in of itself is anti-Semitic, considering the Torahās ban onĀ āmagicā, but whatever. OP, I assume you were acting in good faith, but please at least do a cursory google search before making such grave accusations as these.
(There we go! I had forgotten the word I needed to look up.)
While phylactery does have several meanings, the most common usage (to my knowledge) is in reference to Tefillin, and the two terms are strongly associated with one another at this point. Even if other meanings do exist, the use of the term does have antisemitic undertones. It may not have been intended as such, it might just be an attempt at āgeneric fantasy wordā, but in practice it makes a lot of Jews, myself included, uncomfortable, especially considering how D&D treats Golems, another concept from Judaism that D&D and many other forms of pop culture have taken and twisted into something antithetical to its original form. Even if itās not intentional, @neala-shitposts is right about the ultimate impact it has. The only reason I havenāt felt alienated from the game as a result of tgese issues is because the groups I play with are also primarily Jewish.
I am not Jewish. I did not know this. I will not be usingĀ āphylacteryā to refer to liches/lichdom anymore. Iām also sharing this with my friends so they can learn better too.Ā
