It’s an expected tradeoff. A certain percentage of people are rude. A famous person gets more attention than the average person, and some of that is going to be from rude people. It’d be a little weird to get all indignant every time it happened.

I am shocked and horrified at the abuse allegations which have been put forward against Chiss Tuac.

Sexual abuse of purples by greens is a rampant problem in the industry; in a distressing number of countries, many cases don’t even fall under any existing legal coverage, since actors don’t technically employ stagehands, makeup artists, etc., despite the massive power imbalance that generally exists. Undeniable cases of harassment are too often dismissed by people who find the abuser attractive and believe that therefore no one could be traumatized by unwanted advances from them.

I am professionally acquainted with Chiss Tuac (he plays a significant role in the forthcoming Guarded By The King), but I don’t know him well personally; I don’t consider myself particularly well placed to comment on what may have taken place, and think that any speculation on my part is at this point much more likely to be harmful than helpful. I hope for a speedy and just resolution to the case, and help and healing for Chiss Tuac’s accusers regardless of the outcome.

Update: Chiss was convicted.

The judge sentenced him to a fine and community service. People more yellow than I have explained why the former is a slap on the wrist (short version: income brackets plus flexibility in actors’ pay structures mean he can renegotiate a couple of contracts and take essentially no loss). The latter is even more a sham. Note that the sentence is in value-of-labor not hours-worked; people like actors who are often paid significant amounts for brief appearances can get away with claiming a ludicrously high hourly salary for that purpose.

I don’t have any power to affect sentencing. What I do want to act to address is the fact that he is still slated to appear in Guarded By The King.

This isn’t a move I take lightly. In general, I think it’s a mistake to make artistic decisions, like casting a role, based on the personal life of the artists involved; by doing so, you not only violate the crucial boundary between art and artist, you also implicitly endorse the personal life of all others involved.

Given Chiss’s official non-apology, however, it seems clear to me that he has no intention of amending his behavior. As such, employing him creates an unsafe and hostile work environment for the purples on set. Stage crew may not appear on screen, but they are crucial to the final production that you see; if employing Chiss interferes with their work, the quality of the result is less. This is not only a matter of principle, but also a practical consideration for the artistic process.

I have informed the studio that I will not be taking part in further filming while Chiss is still involved with the production in any capacity. If you’re interested in supporting me in this, you can contact the studio and let them know that you will not watch the film if Chiss appears in it.

(A final note: while some of the other actors may choose to join me in this gesture, please don’t judge those who don’t. It’s an effective action for me to take because I can afford the breach-of-contract penalties if the studio refuses to cooperate, and because I have enough name recognition to expect that they will prefer losing Chiss to me. Those aren’t true of everyone.)

It’s a pity the music of the hour is recycled synth-pop. Dak introduced me to Namani Peyar the other day, and her music is an absolutely inspired combination of classical and experimental composition. 

You can’t predict the future based on what individual obscure artists produce, of course. They can only access their own psyche, and it's the wisdom of crowds that lends the music its predictive power. But I can tell you that if Peyar’s music does become popular (or more popular than one would expect, given that it’s pretty darn incredible), it’ll mean that its listeners can sense a continuity between the past and future. They’ll be at a point where they can sense a magnificent upoming change that they don’t fear.

Given the general state of the world, I can’t say I expect Peyar to be picked up by a major company any time soon, but I hope I live to see it happen.

Wayward Youth does not advise making half-caste green babies. I think there’s a case to be made that inflicting green culture on anyone is cruel, but we in particular are all messes, we expect our children to be messes, and being a green mess sounds harder than being a purple mess.

Little One’s school has the kids all subscribed to a service that delivers them short stories to read once a week and discuss in class.  Sometimes he reads them to me.

Six of the seven he has read to me prominently feature triangles/vees/group arrangements (and the other was about talking furniture).  The kids he’s reading about almost always have three parents or two parents and an allo or four parents and two allos or something.  They’re by different authors, although I think the school system does commission them.

It could be a coincidence or he just thinks those are the more interesting ones to read to me (he has not chosen to do this with all of them) but I suspect they’re trying to promote multiparent arrangements in schools.  I have nothing against those households but I worry about overrepresentation giving kids a skewed idea of how hard these things can be to work out, or causing them to judge their (mostly pairwise) parents for not having found a way to do the arguably more prosocial thing, or a way to give them more adults in their lives, or something.

The stories are also not very long; stories that bother to mention four parents and two allos without making any of the extras related (only one story had the extra household grownup be an aunt) do not have room for grandparents, aunts and uncles, siblings, cousins, neighbors, friends.  If the skew is as big as it looks the kids are going to get the idea that a family is one child doted on by three to seven adults who rained fully formed from the clouds and never talk to anyone except each other and their shared child.

I’m going to talk to Little Friend’s parents about it and see how they feel; a two-family complaint will be taken more than twice as seriously.  It’s probably too late to change the story lineup for this season but they probably don’t commission them all that far in advance and maybe some could get last-minute editing.

On the one hand, I’m jealous; I feel like Irdi will be lucky if four-parent households are so much as an afterthought when he goes to school, let alone parenting arrangements that involve a purple, a yellow, and two greens.

On the other hand, it’s really not for everyone, you know? Nothing is for everyone, and no two families are going to be quite the same. You have to be picky with your partners, and a breakup with multiple people involved is going to be more than twice as messy and heartbreaking for everyone involved, including the kid. Marriage isn’t something to take lightly anyway, but that goes double in this situation.

That’s also a really good point about the extended families. Of the four of us, only Dak is on bad enough terms with his parents that he doesn’t visit them anymore. My family includes Melray’s parents, Kass’s brother and dads, my mom, my dad, my uncle, and my little cousin. Some of that’s luck, but some of that is that everyone comes from somewhere, and if you don’t already have a good model to look back on, it’s that much harder to create another good relationship with one person, let alone three other people and a baby.

I don’t regret the place I’ve taken my life--Dak, Kass, Mel, the music, the dolls, the baby, that’s all part of who I am. But it’s not everyone, and what kids really need is the ability to figure out what works for them and theirs.

Everything else is noise.

So Dak somehow got us a gig as the live entertainment at this blue political dinner, but without telling them that half the band isn’t green. We get there and the guy running things is all “I thought you were a real band!” and like, we’re not a fake band, but personally I probably wouldn’t have hired us either, purely because our style is, shall we say, relatively niche.

But he also didn’t have any alternative entertainment lined up, and Dak and Kass can’t exactly perform by themselves, but performing as we are would make it really obvious that our hosts had a fairly limited budget, and long story short my hair is green now.

I don’t really think it suits me, honestly.

Hm. I can respect having a caste-abolitionist streak, but I don’t know if I’d say we were the best musicians available. We were definitely available, and evidence suggests that we are musicians, but we tend to charge less for live performances than people who can’t get hit with ooci violations, and I think that was more relevant than our skill level in this case.

I’m honestly not even sure we were the best available for the price. Some of it is always luck of the draw.
