The chronically unstable Bulgarian government passed a nearly unanimous vote for a law that completely prohibits "LGBTI propaganda" in schools.
Essentially, they've made it impossible for queer children to look to teachers for help when they are bullied and over 73% of these children report they are harassed over their sexuality or gender identity.
But I want to take a step back and examine the mainstream reaction to this from (primarily) Western liberals.
These people do not care about us.
We are not living, breathing human beings to them. We do not exist.
There are hollow calls for sanctions, kicking us out of the EU, boycotting us and whatnot, but the reality is that most of these people probably couldn't even locate Bulgaria on a map.
They don't care that LGBTI children are abused. They don't care that the government basically took away the few rights transgender people had. They aren't interested in how, amid this gender war, there was another gruesome murder of a woman at the hands of her abusive ex-husband.
We are not human to them.
We are either backwards, lazy, stupid savages or (for the ones that want a life with less violence and harassment) we are just another batch of immigrants with funny accents, and we know those aren't welcome in your precious liberal bastions of equality either.
As Eastern Europeans, I feel we should have expected this. It was the same with Hungary, Poland, Georgia, and especially Russia.
Fuck the country, boycott it, sanction it, and use the examples of murdered gay men and arrested activists as cautionary tales. Watch those savages drown in their mess, their stupidity, their corruption. Pat yourself on the back for what a good, forward-thinking liberal you are and how you would never, ever let your country stoop so low.
But this is the reality on the ground.
No one is coming. No one is going to help us.
No one is going to rally for our liberation because they do not care.
