Despite her many accolades, actress Judy Garland lived a tragic life. At 13, she was signed to MGM studios almost on the spot, after co-founder Louis B. Mayer was stunned by her beautiful voice. She was immediately given the role of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, but the producers were less than impressed with her appearance and told her she was just a “fat little pig with pigtails”. They put her on a strict diet of chicken soup and plenty of cigarettes to supress her appetite. Brainwashed by the toxic industry, Garland developed bulimia.

She was not only starved by Hollywood, but she was regularly drugged, something that would give her a lifelong drug dependency. Garland would be pushed to work 18 hour days, six days a week, and producers needed something to keep their new star energised so they gave her amphetamines. When these gave her insomnia, they just plied her with sleeping pills. This vicious cycle of substance abuse ended tragically when Judy overdosed aged 47.
