The Story of the Mage is exactly what a fantasy story calls for. He wouldn't be able to tell it as if it were true, but he should easily be able to write the story as "fiction." And, anyway, like you said, he literally told the story as he was saying he could never tell it.

Is Mike a bad writer, or is the it the Duffers for giving him that line?

Actually, as their self-insert, it's probably both. That would explain all the plot holes and hanging threads in Mike's previous campaigns.

duffers writing the tower scene as some kind of brutal shut down for bylers is so funny because their love literally shined through anyways. we ended up with a heavily queercoded mike who stumbled over his words and knew what "coming out" meant, will looking the most in love he's ever been, an indirect kiss through the water bottle sharing, and overall great chemistry that couldn't be matched even when mike's gf was dying.

I genuinely thought Byler was still endgame after this. That's how ambiguous this shit was. I literally thought this was like- "ok pre-end of the world acknowledgement of Mike being a bad friend in the past, but he doesn't reveal all his cards here yet until we get to a dire moment where Will is in trouble" and I kept waiting. And waiting. And waiting... And waiting. Every single one on one moment they had, all the way up to the epilogue moment in the basement, I kept going "ok they're going to do it here" and then the moment just never came. I was convinced the whole way through BECAUSE OF THIS SCENE ALONE. HOW THE FUCK DO YOU FUCK UP A REJECTION SCENE? BECAUSE GIRL IT DIDN'T FEEL LIKE ONE BECAUSE THEIR CHEMISTRY ALWAYS FUCKING READS AS ROMANTIC. YOU HAVE THE WRONG PERSON IN THE WRONG SPOT HERE AND IT'S PISSING ME OFF

It's amazing how they could screw up multiple characters to the point that Mike can't even function without Will there to reassure him, while also having Will constantly swallow his hurt to repeatedly reassure him. It's like they intentionally worked overtime to show them as being codependent, while ignoring the shitshow that was Mike and El's relationship.

Also, they went from volume 1 Mike, who had little to no concern that El was stuck in the Upside Down after chasing a demogorgon that attacked his family in there, to volume 2 Mike, who basically forgot Will existed and suddenly remembered he had a girlfriend.
