Erin had never felt at home in the ocean. This was where she had her friends, her family, her life, that much was true. But more than anything, Erin wanted to leave this place, to join the humans on the shore.
Her father put it down to teenage rebellion. Patty, her friend, called Erin crazy for her desires, but often covered for her nonetheless. While she didn’t understand the redhead’s obsession with the world above, she knew how important this was to her, and so she often just let her be.
Today wasn’t much different, Erin resting on one of the rocks a few miles from shore, Patty chastising her as she did. “Really, girl, you know how Humans treat the lot of us. Is this really worth it?”
“Oh, it is!” Erin nodded enthusiastically, before returning her gaze to the ship. Or more specifically, the blonde captain manning the ship. Erin had been following their travels for the past few days, sometimes swimming along and allowing herself to just gaze and dream. “I mean, look at them, Patty. They’re so beautiful.”
“They still look crazy to me.” The crab replied. “And Erin, baby, I’m pretty sure you’re just looking at one person in particular there.”
“Hush you.” Erin countered, but unable to hide the blush creeping up her cheeks. In the moment that she turned back, though, she could feel a set of eyes on her. “Wait, she’s looking this way. Quick, hide!” With that, she swiftly disappeared underneath the surface again, knowing full well that if she was ever found out, she and her family would be hunted.
Holtz stared across the deck of her ship, watching as the crew worked. A smile crept across her face as she looked around and off into the sea. Far off in the distance she could see land, her home. It was good to be returning after so many days away. As much as she loved sailing, and as much as she had needed to go to seal the deal between her country and and the neighboring one, she missed being home. The shore, just a few days sailing away was a welcome sight.
Her advisor, Abby, stood next to her, mostly watching the sailors man the ship. Holtz had been steering but she passed it off to her first mate, deciding to take a break and just enjoy the view. “It’ll be good to be back on land, eh Abby?” She smiled at the other woman.
Abby smiled back at her. “If my seasickness has anything to do with it, then yes, land would be good.” She had been suffering the whole trip, her stomach had not been happy with the travels. If Holtz didn’t need her and she wasn’t as close a friend, she wouldn’t have come at all. “It’ll also be good to bring back the good news of a deal made and finished. I can’t believe you managed it. Everyone knows how stiff Filmore of Columbia can be. But he warmed right up to you. ”
"It's all in the wink, Abs." Holtz grinned. She was about to add something about killer dance moves when something out in the water caught her eye. She stared at the rock, blinking. "Abby, Tell me you just saw what I saw. I think there was a girl out in the water, on that rock." She pointed to the side of the ship.
