masterlist đ¤ part one
everyone drifted upstairs to get settled for the night, their conversations kept between each other as they walked down the hallway.
y/n followed behind janet with a small overnight bag sheâd borrowed hanging from her shoulder.
âi really appreciate you lettinâ me stay,â she smiled, adjusting the strap, âi hope iâm not causinâ too much trouble,â
âgirl, youâve said that fifteen times,âÂ
âsorry,â
âstop apologisinâ,â
ââŚsorry,â
janet rolled her eyes, unable to keep herself from smiling.
before she could lead y/n any further down the hallway, another figure rounded the corner. randy. perfect, just like theyâd planned.
he straightened up almost immediately when he spotted the girls, clearing his throat as if heâd been sent on official business to deliver a message.
âuh, y/n?â
the girl stopped walking, looking to him.
âsmall problem,â he said, shifting on the balls of his feet as y/n raised a brow, confused.
âwhat happened?â
âwell,â randy scratched the back of his neck, avoiding y/nâs eyes, âall the guest rooms are taken,âÂ
âthey are?â y/n said, confusion lacing her tone. sheâd seen the front of their house, surely there was one spare room.
âyep,âÂ
âyouâre sure?â
randy nodded as y/n looked down the hallway, confusion still on her face.
âi didnât think there were that many people stayinâ,â she said, more to herself than anything as randy nodded, far too enthusiastically.
âwell maybe you could share with mi-,â
before y/n had the chance to question it any further, another bedroom door clicked open.
michael stepped out, shutting it carefully behind him, a book tucked beneath one arm.
âwhatâs goinâ on?â his eyes flickered between the two girls and then randy.
ârooms are full,â randy said, his voice a little thick as he avoided his brotherâs gaze.
âwhat?â
âthe guest rooms,âÂ
âno they arenât,â michael frowned, looking down the hallway, and then back at his brother.
âyes they are,âÂ
michael looked genuinely puzzled now.
he glanced down the hallway, almost as thought he was trying to picture every bedroom in his head.
âjackie has one,â michael counted on his fingers, âso does tito and marlonâŚand jan, rebbie, toya, you and mother and josephâŚthereâs still four left,âÂ
randy winced, looking at janet (who was busy looking at the ceiling). y/n looked more consumed than ever.
âtheyâreâŚbeing cleaned,â randy said, his voice a little more high pitched.
âatâŚnight?â michael blinked, unable to hide the skepticism in hid voice.
âyeah,â
ââŚwhoâs cleaninâ them?âÂ
randy paused, opening his both, before he closed it again, mulling the question over in his head.
âpeople,â he said, his voice hardly believable anymore.
âwhat people?â michael tilted his head, his face still the picture of confusion.
from somewhere behind them, marlon suddenly coughed loudly into his fist.
it sounded suspiciously like he was trying not to laugh.
jackie wasn't doing much better, having turned completely away from the conversation, one hand covering his mouth.
even katherine, who had just stepped into the hallway carrying folded towels, paused for a brief second, lowering her head so nobody could see the smile threatening to appear.
only michael remained completely oblivious.
âwhen did mother hire cleaners?â
âuhâŚtoday,â randy said, still avoiding his older brotherâs gaze.
âtoday?â michael repeated, his voice starting to fill in with some suspicion.
âmhm,â
âwhy?â
âthe rooms needing cleaninâ,â
âthey were cleaned yesterday,â
âthey got dirty again,â randy said, looking desperately to janet for help, who avoided his gaze still.
âhow?â
âpeople,âÂ
âwhat people?â
âthe people that were cleaninâ,â
michaelâs eyebrows knitted together in confusion, pausing for a few seconds.
âthe people that were cleaninââŚmade the rooms dirty,â he repeated, almost savouring the words in confusion.
âaccidents happen,â
âwell, iâll go see if theyâre nearly finished,â michael shrugged.
before any of them could stop him, he was down the hallway, opening the door to one of the rooms.
the room was spotless, bed made, the curtains open, and completely empty.
âthis oneâs empty,â he said, looking to y/n, âyou can have this one,âÂ
y/n just nodded, still utterly confused as she mumbled a small âthank youâ, and michael gave the brothers one last look of confusion, muttering something about âcrazy peopleâ.
as soon as his door clicked shut, janet huffed.
ârandy!â
âwhat was i supposed to say?!â he whisper-yelled back to her as she marched towards her own room.
âyou lasted thirty damn seconds!â
âhe started counting bedrooms! bedrooms, jan! who the hell counts bedrooms!?â
ââââ
y/n and michael were in the garden after breakfast, where it was quiet and serene.
she was sat at the edge of the fountain, fingers tracing light patterns into the stone.
michael stood nearby, hands loosely in his pockets and occasionally looking at her before his gaze would be pulled away to a bee buzzing away or a squirrel on a tree.
it wasnât awkward, just careful.
from the back door, marlon watched. janet had given him the plan - give michael a flower to give to y/n.
he walked round the edge of the garden, careful to make sure y/n didnât hear him as he examined the roses in the nearby flower bed.
marlon tiptoed past the fountain, careful to make sure he wasnât spotted as he picked up a small acorn, turning it over in his hand before he flung it at his brother.
michael jolted, his head snapping back as he spotted his brother crouched down comically behind the fountain, a flower in his hand, shushing him desperately.
he crept forward as michael blinked in confusion, the rose pressed into his hand.
âwhatâs that?â he whispered, looking at the pretty flower in his hand.
marlon rushed back behind one of the large flower pots, gesturing to michael.
small, frantic movements - pointing to michael, then to y/n, then to the rose. his movements were way too exaggerated, poor michael just staring at him in bewilderment.
he looked down at the rose, then to y/n again, who hadnât noticed marlon or the rose at all.
then, he tapped her on the shoulder.
âmarlon wanted me to give this to you,â he said, gently passing the rose to y/n as she carefully took the rose.
marlon blinked once. then he blinked again.
there was no way michael had just said the rose was from marlon.
he was hopeless.
âwhat happened?â janet said, her hands on her hips as marlon crept back inside, pinching the bridge of his nose.
âi gave him the damn flower and he said it was from me!â
janet blinked.
âoh for goodnessâ sake-,â she said, sighing deeply, âi guess we need to call in reinforcements,â
ââââ
âalright, move,â jackie said, waving a dismissive hand towards his younger brothers.
âmove?â randy echoed him, confused.
âthe grown-ups are handlinâ this now,âÂ
marlon looked personally offended at the suggestion that he wasnât one.
âgrown-ups?â
âme and tito,â
tito nodded once, folding his arms over his chest.
âyâall had your chance,â he said, âand it didnât go very well,â he gave randy a stern look.
âand what exactly are you gonna do?â janet said, eyeing them all suspiciously as jackie and tito exchanged a look.
âa proper dinner,âÂ
there was silence for a few seconds, before marlon spoke.
âthatâs it?â
the entire afternoon was spent prepping the dining room for the dinner.
katherine had been persuaded into cooking one of mikeyâs favourite meals, though she had never quite figured out why only two plates had been set up.
jackie insisted on using the small dining room, tito had been to three different shops to find candles, though janet wasnât entirely sure they were necessary.
the other two sisters had done wise in keeping out of it.
just before dinner was ready, tito found michael wandering through the hallway, a book tucked under his arm.
âmike,â he said, stopping his little brother.
âhm?â
âneed you in the dining room,â tito said, like he was announcing something important.
âwhy?â
âspecial dinner,âÂ
michael nodded simply, not asking questions.
âokay,â
âdonât ask questions,â
âi wasnât gonna,âÂ
at almost the same time, janet appeared outside y/nâs room.
she knocked twice before poking her head round the door.
âdinnerâs ready,âÂ
âalready?â
âmhm,â
âeveryoneâs downstairs?â
âkind of. just come downstairs,â janet waved a hand vaguely.
the dining room looked.. different.
the curtains had been drawn, candles flickered softly across the middle of the table, only two places had been set.
y/n stopped in the doorway.
before she could say anything, michael walked in through the opposite door.
he stopped too.
his eyes slowly travelled around the room, then to the table, then to y/n.
"âŚwhere is everybody?" he blinked, confusion in his voice once more.
âokay,â he said, accepting that answer immediately.
he walked over and pulled out a chair for her without a second thought.
âthank you,â y/n said, smoothing down her skirt and taking her seat as michael murmured a small âyouâre welcomeâ.
every other jackson was crammed into the kitchen.
jackie and tito stood nearest to the doorway, janet trying to peak round them, randy and marlon knelt down on the floor.
âhave yâall lost your minds?â katherine stared at all her children crammed round the door.
âmother, shush! leave us be,â marlon said, crouched down.
ââŚin my own damn kitchen,â
back in the dining room, michael looked round again, spotting jackieâs favourite plate left on the counter.
âjackie forgot his plate,â he said.
y/n looked over, nodding as she swallowed her mouthful. theyâd been having a great conversation before, all about michaelâs favourite animals, littered with random facts.
âiâll go give it to him,â he said, standing up as he twisted the knob of the kitchen door.
the door burst open, five jacksons scattering in every direction.
jackie nearly dropped a bread roll, randy tripped over a chair, tito hit his head, and janet slapped a hand over her face.
âwhat are yâall doinâ?â he blinked, as silence fell over them.
everybody looked at everybody else, until finally, tito spoke, smiling for too widely.
âfamily meeting,â he said.
âin the kitchen?â
âyep,â jackie said, catching on to titoâs words.
âduring dinner?âÂ
âyep,â marlon nodded along too.
âokay,â michael said, looking to the plate in his hand, âyâall forgot your food,â
âiâll set the table,â y/n said, pushing her plate back as she helped lay out the other plates, and michael brought the pot of food in too.
so much for a date.
janet just groaned internally. there was no way they were this damn oblivious.
ââââ
by the third failed plan, katherine had seen enough.
sheâd watched randy lie about bedrooms, marlonâs failed flower plan, jackie and tito somehow mess up a perfectly normal dinner.
and through all of it, the two people they were trying to help still seemed as oblivious as ever.
âalright,â she said, hands on her hips, as all heads turned to her.
âmama-,â
âno,â she said, her voice not angry, just final.
âleave those two alone,â she said, as the room fell quiet.
âbut-,â
âjanet,â
the girl sighed dramatically, mumbling a small âyes mamaâ as katherine looked between them all.
âlove donât need all yâall pushinâ it,â
late that afternoon, katherine found y/n in the living room, a book in hand.
âdarlinâ?â
âyes, mrs jackson?âÂ
âwould you mind doinâ me a favour?â
y/n nodded, as katherine smiled warmly as her eagerness to help.Â
âthereâs a little gazebo at the back of the garden,â katherine smiled, âand i left my knitting basket there this morninâ,â
âiâll go get it,â y/n said.
âthank you sweetheart,â
a few minutes later, katherine found michael in the music room, quietly turning pages of his notebook.
âmikey, dear,â she said.
âyes, mother?âÂ
âiâve left my knitting basket in the gazebo, would you be a dear and get it for me?âÂ
michael closed his notebook without question.
âiâll go get it,â
y/n looked round the small gazebo - the basket was nowhere in sight, not under the clothes or near her flower pots.
âthatâs strange,â she muttered under her breath, her gaze drawn to the entrance of the gazebo at the sound of footsteps.
michael.
âmother sent you to find the knitting basket too?â he blinked, watching as she nodded, a confused frown on her face.
there was silence for a second as they both blinked, and then they understood.
âof course,â y/n finally said, realising why they had both been sent to look for it, michael realising a few seconds after her.
y/n just laughed, sitting down on the edge of tone of the benches.
it was obvious there was no point going back now.
michael laughed too, sitting down beside her.
âsoâŚmother sent us both here,â he said, his voice soft as y/n nodded, swallowing for a second.
he was close, she could feel the heat from his body next to her.
ây/n?â
âyeah?â
âyou knowâŚiâm surprised you didnât forget me,â
âyou are?â
âyeah,â
âhow could i forget you?â y/n said, shrugging for a second, âyou left me your book so i didnât get sad when yâall left. thatâŚthat tells me everything i needed to know about you,â
michael smiled softly.
âi kept the drawing you gave me,â
âthe dinosaur one?â y/n cringed at how bad it was.
âyep,â
âit looked more like a dog,â she said, shaking her head softly as michael shrugged.
âwell, i knew it was a dinosaur,â he said, his finger brushing her hand lightly as he paused again.
âi was kinda scared when janet invited me round,â y/n admitted quietly, shrugging slightly as michael blinked.
âyou were?â
âyeah, i meanâŚyâall are famous now,â
âdoesnât mean youâre any less than us,â michael said, his voice gentle, âi was scared too,â
âwhy?â
âsaw those modelling magazines you did,â michael said quietly, âthought about reaching out when i first saw you on that runway,â
y/n flushed slightly.
âgod you looked so beautiful,â he whispered, âbut you were janetâs friend. couldnât do that to her,â
the girl nodded, choosing not to speak.
âbut now we know sheâs all good with itâŚand mother tooâŚâ michael looked up from the spot on the ground her been staring at, looking to her.
y/n swallowed.
he was close, his breath against her lips as he moved nearer, one hand coming to cup her cheek.
their lips met in a kiss - soft, and gentle.
y/nâs hands stayed on the bench beside her, as they moved back, her face flushed softly.
âthey know we can see âem, right?â she said, looking over his shoulder through the little window for a second.
once again, all the jacksons were crammed round the window, marlon practically on top of jackie.
âi canât see!â
âmove your big ass head-!â
âget off my foot!â
âwhat happened?!â janet demanded, shorter than all her brother as she huffed.
ây/n threw up on him, i think!â marlon squinted.
âshut your dumbass mouth,â tito huffed, âthey kissed,â
âmother, they kissed!â janet whipped round, her eyes shining as her mother hummed, not even reacting.
âwhy arenât you excited?â randy blinked to her.
âi knew itâd happen,â katherine placed her knitting basket on the side (sheâd never really left it), âsometimes love just needs some space,â

the rhythmic tinkling of the doorbell rang through the house as y/n dropped the blocks in her hand, her head shooting up, alert like a puppy.
âmama, door!â she called out, hearing her mother dust off her hands in the kitchen, a few pans clattering before she wiped her hands on her apron, walking past y/n to open it.
all the houses along the street were small, only one story and painted the same, striking white colour.
y/n paid no mind to whoever was at the door, continuing her block sorting, pushing the star-shaped one into the star-shaped hole.
âiâm katherine, i noticed you moved in next to us, i thought iâd bring over some fresh cookies for you,â
âthank you so much, you didnât have to,â
âitâs nothinâ big, donât worry! is it just you here?â
âjust me and my daughter. y/n darling, come say âhiâ!â
at the sound of her name, y/n looked up, dropping the blocks and scampering to where her mother was at the door.
opposite her, a kindly-looking woman stood in front of her, holding a tin packed full of cookies.
âdarling,â her mother crouched down beside her, âthis is mrs jackson,â
y/n looked between her mother and katherine, offering a small wave.
âyou know,â katherine knelt down, âi have a daughter around the same age, if little y/n was lookinâ for some friends in the neighbourhood?â
y/nâs mother looked to her, gasping softly.
âhowâs that, sweetheart? you can make your first friend,â
the small girl just nodded, still too shy to say anything in front of katherine, who clapped her hands together happily.
âjust send her over here whenever,â y/nâs mother smiled, âiâll make some lemonade for them,â
that was how y/n ended up standing opposite janet, who was holding onto a doll in one hand, the other bunched into the side of her dress as she swayed from side to side on the spot.
âhi,â y/n was the first to speak, still half-shy as she held her own doll in one hand, âthis is lily,â she held up the doll by the arm.
janet looked between her and the doll, before lifting hers too.
âdaisy,â
and that was how the two girls started their friendship, y/n showing janet all the dolls clothes she had in a little box under the sofa.
âi think daisy would like a pink dress,â y/n fished out a little tattered dress, but janet took it like chanel, her eyes wide.
katherine came round later in the evening to find the two girls surrounded by little clothes, and shoes, and hats, and jackets, changing the outfit of their dolls every few seconds.
âtheyâve been at it all afternoon,â y/nâs mother stood in the doorway beside katherine, a fond smile on both of their faces.
âjust glad my janet finally has a friend of her own,â katherine said, watching as y/n helped janet wrap a tiny scarf round her dollâs neck.
âwe best get goinâ, we gotta take our sons for a show,â she said, her smile faltering for a second.
âa show?â
âwellâŚseeâŚmy boys, theyâŚthey perform,â
âhow so?â
âsinginââŚdancinâ,â katherine said, her expression half-guarded, âwhatever joe wants âem to do,â
y/nâs mother nodded, noting the look of weariness on the other womanâs face, and knowing not to pry.
sheâd learn of the jackson 5 soon enough.
ââââ
~1971~
from that day on, y/n and janet had been best friends.
from visiting each otherâs houses after school, to going to the park together with their mothers, the two girls were inseparable.
so naturally, y/n had met all the jackson brothers.
jackie was the oldest, then tito, and they talked to y/n the least out of all the brothers.
marlon would occasionally walk past and ruffle her hair, and randy would sometimes join in on playful teasing.
and michael, well, he didnât talk as much either.
but all of them loved to tease y/n.
she was small, obviously being younger than them, and slightly smaller than janet too.
squirt.
thatâs what theyâd call her.
âwatch it, squirt!â from marlon when heâd rush past, basketball in hand.
or a, âyâall playinâ dolls again, squirt?â in a mocking tone from jackie.
even michael used the nickname. âwant anythinâ to eat, squirt?â
but when he used it, he made sure he didnât hurt her feelings. he made sure y/n was actually comfortable with the nickname, and not to hurt her feelings.
the other boys teased her and janet relentlessly for being bossy and playing with dolls at their âbig old ageâ.
but it was always michael whoâd walk over later, holding the dress randy had snatched and hidden from her and janet, kneeling down to make sure she was okay.
âthey werenât too mean, were they, squirt?â heâd say, handing it back softly, helping push the dollâs arms back through the holes, as y/n would shake her head.
and even if she did, heâd make sure she was definitely not lying.
âtheyâre idiots, yâknow that, squirt? pay âem no mind,â
and y/n would leave happy, knowing no matter where randy or marlon would hide her stuff, sheâd always get it back from michael.
for a whole year, her life was perfect.
that was, until, katherine came to the door, a solemn expression on her face as she spoke to y/nâs mother.
that was how y/n ended up standing outside the house of the jacksons, one hand in her motherâs, and the other clinging hard to her doll, still dressed in the outfit janet had picked out.
she blinked hard, hot tears filling her eyes as she watched jackie and tito carry a heavy box into the back of their volkswagon van.
janet followed the boys out of the house, also blinking back tears as she clutched her own doll to her chest.
âkatherine,â y/nâs mother said, as she walked to where they stood, watching.
janet stood beside her mother, swaying from side to side.
âiâm sorry about the girls,â katherine said, looking down where y/n and janet sniffled, mumbling things to each other.
âit was inevitable,â y/nâs mother said, watching as her daughter took off the miniature necklace from her doll, holding it out to janet.
âcome on baby,â y/nâs mother knelt down, âjanet needs to go with her brothers, alright?â
y/n just sniffled, gently handing the little necklace to the girl opposite her.
as much as it ached y/nâs mother to see her daughter upset, she knew visiting would be difficult too.
âbye y/n,â janet whispered, keeping her voice quiet as she sniffled.
any louder, and she wouldâve cried more.
âbye janet,â
y/n watched with her mother as katherine led janet away gently, strapping her into the back of the car, not even registering the soft sound of footsteps coming towards them.
âhey squirt,â
y/nâs teary-eyed gaze was snapped from janet as michael tentatively knelt down, so he was eye level with her.
âwanted to give you this,â he held a book in his hands, the words âpeter panâ in cursive writing written across the front.
the girlâs attention was momentarily drawn to the book, slightly tattered round the edges, but still in good enough condition to read.
her hands were shaky as she took the book from him, holding it with both hands.
âit was my favourite book,â michael said, his voice gentle, âthought maybe youâd wanna read it,â
âoh michaelâŚâ y/nâs mother said, her voice full of gratitude as her daughterâs teary eyes flickered over the cover with slight curiosity.
michael was quiet for a second, watching the girl in front of him.
âcatch you around, squirt,â he straightened, giving her hair one last ruffle as he headed towards the car.
marlon, tito, jermaine and jackie made sure to ruffle her hair as they walked past too, calling out a quick, âbye squirt!â as they did.
that was the last y/n saw of the jacksons.
she didnât forget her old friend, but her life eventually went on without them, their memory kept alive by the doll she had, and the book michael had left her.
ââââ
~1986~
y/n had taken to modelling like a house on fire.
she had a commanding presence on the runway, a specific charm only she could muster for magazine shoots, and a face people would kill for.
but beneath all that?
she was almost still a child at heart.
it was early when she awoke to the sound of the postman walking past her house (she still lived with her mother), walking down the stairs with a mug in her hands and wrapped in her nightgown, to open the door.
a single cream, thick envelope lay at the bottom of the door, and in the front, her address scrawled.
she didnât recognise the elegant, looped handwriting.
with a soft hum, y/n set her mug down on the table, mumbling a soft âmorningâ to her mother as she tore the envelope open.
a letter slid out from it, and on top?
a little, silver necklace.
the same one she had given janet when sheâd left for encino.
surely notâŚ
dear y/n,
oh god it took so long to find you! but im so grateful i did, and im so sorry it took so long for me to do so. us jacksons are having a reunion in encino next week, and iâd be so grateful if you could come. Iâve missed you so much.
lots of love,
janet
for a few seconds, y/n was frozen still.
her old best friend, janet, had remembered her? and invited her for a reunion? how could she say?
the compound in encino was huge.
it had a fountain in the middle and a long brick path, the house separate away from the public with a large black gate that had to be opened for her by security.
y/n hadnât exactly thought about what sheâd say, looking down at the dress sheâd chosen - a simple black one and some heels.
was it too little? too much?
it was too late to change now, of course.
with a deep swallow, she raised her fist to the thick wooden door, and knocked.
oneâŚtwoâŚthreeâŚfourâŚ
the door opened before she could count to five in her head, and there she was. janet.
and god, she was beautiful.
âjanet,â y/n finally spoke, her eyes wide as she stared at the best friend she had had long ago.
before either of them could say another word, they were wrapped in each otherâs arms, mumblings of âi missed youâ and âyouâre so gorgeous, girlâ between them.
the house wasnât too full, with all the brothers (except jermaine), sisters and their parents in the large living room.
jackie and tito were having a full discussion on the sofa, joe sat in his armchair and smoking a cigar.
marlon, michael and randy were sat on the floor, and rebbie and la toya were in their own seats, talking softly.
they only noticed y/n at the doorway when katherine froze from the kitchen door, a tray in her hands.
ây/n,â she said, her voice full of disbelief.
sheâd hardly expected y/n to actually turn up.
the whole room was silent for a second before it erupted into loud gasps and exclamations.
âsquirt, that you?â
âno way thatâs y/n!â
âyouâre pulling my leg, jan!â
only michael watched from the floor, silent, but a small smile on his face.
of course sheâd heard of his fame now.
heâd released off the wall and thriller, he was all famous now. y/n hardly expected him to remember her.
y/n and janet spent a whole hour on the sofa together, catching up on life; y/nâs modelling, how fancy janetâs life was now, all about y/nâs mother (who couldnât make it due to work).
it wasnât until after dinner that michael got y/n alone.
jackie and tito were arguing over a card game at the dining table, marlon and randy had disappeared outside with a basketball, and the girls were somewhere upstairs.
y/n stood by the sink with her sleeves rolled to her elbows, rinsing a few glasses despite katherine insisting she didn't have to.
"you really don't gotta do that," michael's soft voice came from the doorway.
the girl jumped, almost getting her sleeves wet as her head snapped back.
âdidnât mean to startle you,â michael said, his voice sheepish as she shook her head, mumbling a small âitâs fineâ.
he leaned against the frame, hands tucked into the pockets of his trousers, smiling almost sheepishly.
"old habits," y/n said quietly, âmy mama would've told me off if i left without helping,â
a silence settled over them.
it wasnât uncomfortable but it felt almostâŚnostalgic.
it wasnât broken til michael walked next to her, picking up a tea towel.
âwash,â he said, eyes on her hands where sheâs frozen, looking to him almost confused.
âyouâre helpinâ?â
âcourse,â
there was silence for a few seconds.
âsurprised you didnât forget me,â michael said, his voice soft, almost vulnerable.
âforget you? kinda impossible now youâre a big hit- sorry,â y/n caught the expression he gave her, one eyebrow raised as she winced.
âwell, marlon always took my dolls,â
âhe did,â
âand randy hid their clothes,â
âhe did,â
âbut you always gave them back,â
âi did,â michael said, drying off another mug and accepting a plate from her.
there was another silence, but it was less awkward, this time.
janet watched, her eyes wide as she peeked round the doorframe. oh god.
she matched up the stairs where all the brothers were sitting, playing some board game between them as the sisters sat on the bed and talked.
âfamily meeting,â she said, her voice as bossy as it always was.
âwhat did i do?â marlon looked up from the game, his piece still in his hand.
ânothing,â janet waved a dismissive hand towards him.
âthen why're we havin' a meeting?" jackie asked.
janet folded her arms, letting them all watch her, waiting a deliberate second too long so theyâd all lean in closer, desperate to know.
"because michael's in love,â
the room went quiet.
"...what?" tito blinked.
"with who?" randy asked.
âand do they like him back?â
âof course not, itâs mikey-,â
âdonât be a jerk marlon,â
âshut up jackie,â
âwhy donât you-?â
âall of you, shut up!â janet hissed, narrowing their eyes in annoyance, âfocus on the task at hand,â
âso who is it?â randy asked again.
ây/n,â
there was a pause between them all as they exchanged looks, their eyes blown wide as the sisters gasped.
then the room erupted with cheers and gasps of âi knew it!â and âainât no way!â
katherine, who had wandered in carrying a basket of folded washing, looked around at all of them.
"..what are y'all yellin' about now?"
"michael likes y/n," janet announced proudly, a grin on her face.
katherine blinked, before she stepped into the room, still carrying the basket.
âso what are yâall waiting for?â she asked, âget them together,â
that was how janet officially started âoperation g.t.tâ (get them together).
janet didnât waste a second.
âokay,â she clapped her hands once, pacing in front of them like she was briefing a military operation, âweâve got a emergency,â
âthis is not an emergency,â jackie muttered, âthis is michael beinâ shy again,â
âitâs an emergency,â janet repeated sharply, pointing at him, âbecause y/n is here now. in the house. breathing the same air. do you understand the potential?â
âso whatâs the plan?â randy leaned forwards.
âwe make them alone together,â
âthatâs it?â tito frowned.
katherine set the basket down with a knowing smile, âjust donât make it obvious.â
âmama, itâs already obvious,â marlon said, rolling his eyes as tito gave him a slap on the leg.
janet was already halfway out the room before anyone could argue further.
âwhere you goinâ?â jackie called after her, looking to where she walked down the hallway in confusion.
âto initiate the first phase,â she grinned, like that was the most obvious answer in the world.
y/n was downstairs in the kitchen, still drying with michael alongside her when she saw janet walk in.
âhey jan,â
âhey y/n, got a sec?â
âuh sure,â y/n said, giving michael an apologetic look as he set down another cup, stepping off with janet.
âyou busy tomorrow?â janet asked, trying to hide the excitement in her eyes as y/n shrugged.
âuhâŚno, not really,â y/n said.
âgood,â janet nodded immediately, âstay a few days,â
michael blinked.
âwhat?â
âyou just got here. you came all this way. youâre not leaving after one night,â
âi donât wanna intrudeâŚâ y/n hesitated, glancing between her and michael.
âyouâre not intruding,â janet said quickly, stepping further in, âthis is literally the least intruding situation possible. youâre family,â
that word landed softly in the room.
michael looked down at the counter, like he was trying to pretend it didnât affect him.
y/nâs expression softened.
ââŚare you sure?â
âpositive,â
she turned slightly, finally looking at michael now.
âright, mikey?â
âohâŚuhâŚyeah. of course. you should stay,â michael straightened a little, caught off guard, âi mean, if you want to. not like- yâknow. you donât have to. but you can. obviously,â
y/n nodded, smiling softly.
âiâll stay a few days, then,â she decided softly.
janet smiled, turning her back to them as she moved towards the stairs.
their plan had officially began.
