“Absolutely not,” that was the first thing that came out of Michael's mouth when you suggested the idea of watching a horror movie.
“Mikey, c'mon! I'll be there and you won't be alone,” you pleaded with him, your hand covering the paper he was writing on.
“No, it'll be dark and who knows what comes out at night.” His skin was crawling at the thought of it, his eyes instinctively darting around the area of your room.
“Please, just this once it'll be fun, I promise,” you scooted closer, this time your face closer to his, scanning his face for any sort of hint that, maybe just maybe, despite his fear he'd suck it up just this one time for you.
“No, that's final.” He lowered his head, now focusing back on the paper he was writing some song lyrics on.
“Ugh, Michael,” you put your hands up, signaling your inevitable defeat, flopping down against the carpet of your floor, the hardness immediately causing back pain as you spread your arms out, the ceiling becoming your new view, your fan spinning in continuous circles cooling the room down as it rocked slightly.
That conversation led you exactly into tonight. With the influx of romance movies coming out, there was no way Michael would suspect that instead of a cute love story he'd instead see one of the most terrifying movies of the time, well, according to the critics. Honestly, you weren't too big in the romance department of movies, but what you did love was a good horror film. The whole ride there you were practically bouncing in the passenger seat, rambling on and on about the romance movie Michael thought he was seeing. The poor guy spent the whole ride smiling, excitement through the roof, blissfully unaware of what was actually going to be taking place tonight.
The drive-in theater was mostly packed, cars sat dark, headlights off as people waited for the screen. The light sound of chatter, mixed with the normal sounds of the night atmosphere.
“Wow, so many people here,” Michael spoke in between bites of his popcorn.
“Mhm, it's a really good movie!” The movie hadn't even started and somehow the two of you were taking down the large popcorn one handful at a time. Sure, you felt evil, maybe you felt bad too, but what better way to face your fear than exposure therapy.
The screen geared up, illuminating the grassy area of the drive-in as the intro filled the screen, with two quick flashes of lightning, the sound booming through the speakers.
Oh, not your typical romance movie intro, but maybe that was why it's so highly rated. The thought crossed his mind before he was immediately snapped back to reality, a blood-curdling scream filling his ears next.
“This doesn't seem like a romance,” he shifted in his seat, the unsettled look quickly spreading across his face.
“It's not!” You were a little too cheerful about it, stealing another handful of popcorn, eyes glued to the projector.
“What? Oh god, I can't handle this." He jumped at the sudden sounds, a large hand covering his eyes as if that would protect him from whatever else was to come. The popcorn was now in your hands.
"Too late now," you popped another piece of popcorn into your mouth.
"I don't think I'll be sleepin' tonight.”
