Sweeter than either Charleston Sercial or Savannah Verdelho, Boston Bual still boasts incredible balance and refreshing acidity. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, Madeira was the United States’ most coveted wine.
Every public event-from the signing of the Declaration of Independence to George Washington’s Inauguration was toasted with a glass or two of Madeira. For more than 100 years, no other wine rivaled it in the eyes of connoisseurs. But after the Civil War, Madeira drifted into obscurity, the victim of a series of natural, political and economic calamities. It was not until the beginning of the 21st century that America once again embraced this enigmatic wine.
Madeira has a magical quality, an astonishing bouquet with a glorious #richness and #balance, and has versatility as an aperitif, dessert wine and food wine. To emphasize America’s deep historical connection to Madeira, each wine in the series is named for a U.S. city where Madeira was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Thus, Charleston Sercial and Savannah Verdelho celebrate the South’s love of drier Madeiras, while Boston Bual and New York Malmsey acknowledge the North’s appreciation of sweeter Madeiras. Each bottle bears an early engraving from that city, along with a back label describing the wine and America’s special link to Madeira’s illustrious history.

Effie’s Homemade mobile storefront on ScanKart
Effie’s homemade was launched in 2008 by two friends, Joan MacIsaac and Irene Costello who had known each other since high school. Before starting this venture, Joan was a professional chef while Irene had a comfortable corporate job in the financial sector but they always wished to do something on their own. Their first venture was a creative cooking school called Ruby Chard Cooking Classes which lasted for about 2 years. Their passion for food was deep and they decided to return to their roots and do something simple. The concept of their new company came from Joan’s mother’s (Effie MacLellen) farmhouse recipe of oatcakes that she got from rural Nova Scotia. The beauty of the product was wrapped in simplicity and high quality ingredients! After having tested it during the catering business, they knew they had a great product and that it was ready for the big games!
Launching a product like oatcakes had it own challenges. No one knew what an oatcake was. They spent a lot of time educating customers about their product through hundreds and hundreds of samplings. They would create a goodwill at stores by giving out sampling cases and get more and more people to taste their product. Another big challenge was that neither Joan or Irene had any retail experience. They wanted to build a successful wholesale business but started out small by going store to store in Boston and selling their product. Their biggest break came at their first Fancy Foodshow Festival where they were spotted by Grafton Village Cheese based in Vermont and ordered a bulk order for their biscuits. Since then Effie’s homemade biscuits have never looked back. They have had a meteoric rise and are now sold in 200 stores around the country. Amazing, isn’t it!! When asked about their favorites, Irene is biased towards the newly released Cocoa cake while Joan is crazy about the Corncakes. They say customers are still fanatical and loyal about the original oatcakes.

- Think about growth at a very early stage.

Al Freshco Meals - Healthy local food for all
Laurel Valchuis is the owner and founder of Boston based meal-kit startup Al Freshco Meals and we at ScanKart are huge fans. She creates delicious healthy meal-kits by sourcing food from local farmers and then delivers them to everyone around the city on her trike - whats not to love about that!! She found that a lot of people aspire to eat food that is grown locally but realized that factors like time, knowledge and preparing such foods were major hinderances. We paid attention to how people are using the app and what difficulties they were facing while using the app. So we went back to the drawing board, took a leaf out of the Apple’s user interface guidelines and restructured our app to introduce tabbed navigation. Turtle Creek Winery launches on ScanKart platform.
Turtle Creek is a small scale winery nestled in the shadow of Boston. Its slogan is “Classic Wines from Noble Grapes in a Dangerous neighborhood”. They produce around 1000 cases of wine per year and include plantings such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Riesling. They also source ultra premium wine grapes from select growers in Finger Lakes, NY and California and don’t make wine from hybrid grapes. Kip Kumler is the owner of Turtle Creek and his entrepreneurial journey to become a winemaker is very interesting. He left his business profession in 1997 and jumped into wine making without having any prior knowledge or preparation and has been producing world class handcrafted wines ever since. Even though it is a small scale operation, Kip thrives to be on the leading edge of innovation to produce the best possible wine in most unforgiving weather in the North East. If you fancy great local wine then make sure to find Turtle Creek at your neighborhood Farmer’s Markets.

Boston’s startup OoOTie launches on ScanKart.
OoOTie is a Boston-based fashion startup that is making the process of owning unique, high-quality bow ties affordable, fun and super easy.
The company was founded in 2010 and is run by our close friends and fellow entrepreneurs Diego Torres Palma (BU MBA grad) and Matthew Pearlson (MIT grad). Being bow tie enthusiasts themselves, they realized something was missing and not catered to the new generation and decided to create bow ties that were fresh, fun and non-traditional. You can find their awesome ties in the Barnes & Nobles store at B.U, Boston’s Museum of Science, Adler Planetarium, New York’s American Natural History Museum and many more.
