Fanfic writing is 50% actually writing and 50% staring at the screen whispering ‘how do words work again’?
It is also:
10% googling “synonyms for said”
15% contemplating your life choices
20% changing one sentence 37 times and then changing it back
25% “research” (aka wikipedia rabbit hole until 4am)
30% crying because the scene was better in your head
It’s such a struggle!

favorite trope: the very important hand touch in period dramas
*begrudgingly reblogs while grumbling* this is exactly my aesthetic
That last one is FRISKY. I literally leaned back a little. BOTH HANDS? And that gentle glide over the top before the clasp? -fans self-
How dare you put this kinky hand holding on my dash? That little grope at the end was TOO MUCH
i seriously fainted at that last one. where are your gloves people! is this pornhub?
Do you think tumblr’s gonna flag this?
FUCK
this may be really nitpicky BUT I am listening to Solas speak about Elvhenan and he pronounces “Arlathan” as “Arla - than” which differs from how most modern elves say it as “Ar - lAth-an”
The interesting part of this is that these pronunciations could be linguistically distinct, as in they have different meanings.
“Arla” is canonically “trap” as in “Elgar’arla” - a spirit trap, where “Elgar” means “spirit.
“an” is a suffix to indicate location, and it is the same in both pronunciations (the /th/ in the first pronunciation could be written off as a linguistic insertion rule to separate two /a/ sounds from each other, but I digress).
So by how Solas pronounces it, with distinguishing between “Arla” and “than” we can translate “Arlathan” to mean something like “Trapped Place” or “Place of Traps” or “Place where there are Traps”. This makes sense considering Elvhenan’s history of slavery and ALSO the lore that says Arlathan was sunk under ground - it is literally trapped.
Here is where it gets interesting.
“Ar” is a first person pronoun, meaning “I” or “me”
“lath” means “love”
In the second pronunciation, we can say that “Ar-lAth-an” mean “Place I love” or “I love this place”, or perhaps even “The place where I love”.
Two very very different translations then! And an indication of how just a simple pronunciation can completely warp the concept of something. The first translation gives Arlathan an ominous feel, potentially even sinister, but the second is more loving and whimsical. Language actively shapes our perspectives, and so it would be no surprise then to see the Dalish have a romanticized idea of Arlathan and subsequently Elvhenan (in addition to the passage of time, being removed from it, and so forth).
Now this isn’t to say this is just a result of VA preference and interpretation *shrug* it could be coincidence. I could be reading into things, but it is a neat little thing to possibly consider. This is mostly to consider the interesting possible ambiguity and double meaning Arlathan’s name may have. This is by no means a perfect or even correct analysis. Mostly just a thought.
Also, I heavily sampled the wiki if you want a reference.
What’s even more interesting is that Arlathan might be the Black/Golden City in the Fade. If the theory “the Evanuris are trapped in the Black City together with the Blight” is true, then Solas’ pronunciation implies that Arlathan is literally the “Place of Trap”, “A Trapped Place”, because that’s where the Evanuris and the first Taint that threatened the world are locked away. That’s where they are trapped in.
We know for sure that there are some ancient elven ruins in the Forest of Arlathan: Tevinter claims that they sank the city underground using blood magic and powerful spells after conquering it, but we know that Elvhenan was already lost when the humans came, that the elves fought against each other in a bloody civil war caused by the absence of their gods and their new, disarming, weakened condition and magic.
So it’s probable that Imperium merely feasted on what remained of Arlathan and later came up with sly propaganda to show how powerful and mighty their empire was. The ruins found in the Forest of Arlathan are probably just a minor part of the city or the most external parts of it and the main, most important part of it might be what’s been floating in the Fade since the creation of the Veil.
It’s also not secret that the depiction of the Black City we can find in Solas’ frescoes and other pictures is very similar to elven architecture and the mosaics on the floor of elven temples that depict Arlathan.

yanno i still think skip beat is one of the greatest things ever written
it’s just…. a shame about the art style
Agreeeeed! Sometimes I forget how terrifying the bodies were in the earlier chapters since it’s gotten a lot better in like the last 10 years but dammit this inspired me to reread and HOLY SHIT. Criiinnnnggge. I mean it’s most obvious in the faces (face shapes especially) but yeah, bodies too. Holy shit the proportions in the early chapters. I vividly remember not seeing much wrong with it when I was a lil teen but looking back… yikes. Hey, do you remember that one scene where Kyoko helps Ren find his Katsuki and she acts a Mizuki in his apartment? There is this one panel in chapter 71, I think it’s page 13 but I’m not sure, where the proportions between characters and background are so ridiculously mismatched that I will never be able not to laugh thinking about it. Like, that scene was really well written and super interesting and rather serious but goddammit if that panel didn’t totally rip me out of the scene. Also, do you have a favorite outfit in the manga? I admit I don’t like some of the really elaborate dresses like the angel dresses for Sho’s MV or the dress Kijima-san rented for Kyoko (even though I liked the complete picture of her). but yeah you’re right in general the clothes are just so damn detailed it’s insane. Don’t get me wrong I’m totally loving it but just imagining having to draw that myself makes be dizzy. Skip Beat is still one of my all-time favorite manga after all these years, kinda cool to see I’m not the only one who keeps returning to it. Any opinions on the upcoming Momiji arc?
A lot of the time I can kinda ignore it for the most part, but there are some pages like you said that the proportions are so insane that it takes you out of it a bit and you can’t help but laugh lol. Off the top of my head, I think the worst proportions that come to mind is that one scene where Ren is playing piano? And his arms and hands and face are just NUTS. Like you wouldn’t expect to find yaoi hands outside of yaoi but… there they were.
But I think the sheer attention to detail and dedication to consistency is amazing and certainly makes up for it, and also the rather interesting and dynamic poses that the characters are in a lot. The proportions may be bad, but the effort is there and that’s one of the things that saves the art for me. I think one of my favorite things in the manga was that the characters actually had like… a wardrobe! Especially in Kyoko! It made her character all the more real and lovable that I could be reading a chapter and she’s wearing a shirt that I can look at and say “Oh! It’s the same one she was wearing back during this arc of the story!” and that happens with some other characters too. It’s been a LONG time since I’ve read manga, but I remember when I read it as a liddo that really stuck out to me because I had never seen anything like it before. Usually in other mangas characters just had clothes for whatever the occassion called for when they needed it. A lot of special outfits were seen once and then never again. But Skip Beat does its best to not have that happen. Maybe I obsess over the clothes more than most since I love fashion and stuff but… still.
As for favorite outfit, I think… I would have to say a lot of the outfits whenever Kyoko is playing Setsuka Heel are some of my favorite ones bc im a predictable ass bitch who likes punk/goth shit lol.
I would have to read all the way through to really give a straight answer though! It’s been YEARS since I’ve read Skip Beat, and I’ve only got like vague “oh i THINK this thing happened? right? maybe?” memories of the specifics. That’s also why I can’t answer that last question - I’m actually pretty behind, it looks like! I’m rereading it right now, and I’m only on chapter 55 - but I stopped reading it a really, really long time ago. I think the last chapter I read that had just come out was like… 200? I think? I don’t know, it’s when Ren ran into Kyoko as Kuon at that one hotel? I think they kissed at that point too… But that was the last bit I read so I don’t know any of what happens after that stuff!
And- addressing what you said in your tags - I totally agree! My favorite thing about Skip Beat is, of course, the romance. It’s one of the best love stories that I know of, and slow burn is one of my favorite things in the world so it’s got a warm place in my heart, but I’m also in it to see how Kyoko’s life goes! Where she goes in her career! Like I genuinely want her to succeed, I don’t want it to just be “there and then they finally kiss, story done, wrap it up”. I’m also in it to see Ren overcome his bad past and PTSD (i… i thinK? LIKE I SAID ITS BEEN A WHILE but i do remember that like. someone… died because of him? like a family member? idfk dude all i know is Ren Is Not OK). I’m not just in it for the romance, I want the individual characters to prosper too. Skip Beat is just great. Message me if you ever wanna talk about it! I might give you my opinions as I read the newer chapters lol <3
The yaoi hands thing tho! xD “you wouldn’t expect to find yaoi hands outside of yaoi but… there they were“ SO GOLD. SO TRUE. Wiping a tear from my eye hear. Damn. And yesss, I totally agree with the wardrobe thing. In general, I get the impression that the author knows how clothes work. Like, not just with a fashion sense but that normal people don't have an unlimited amount of clothes. I think it speaks for the author when you can recognize the same piece of clothing in a different outfit. And it speaks for the clothes when they are memorable enough that you immediately recognize them even if there are literal months in between the times you get to see them in another chapter. Just- Skip Beat is just on a whole nother level when it comes to fashion compared to most other manga in the shoujo category.
About, slow burn. I quite like the way Skip Beat does it. There are some legit reasons why there is slow burn in the first place and while I admit I rolled my eyes a little about the whole “I am responsible for the death of a friend/mentor and watched them eye in the arms of his love, hence I don’t deserve love” thing from Ren but in a way it still makes sense. Plus, that’s not the only reason why he wouldn’t go for this (Kyoko being underage and all that). But all in all, yeah, this is some really good slow burn. Especially since the manga gives us more to focus on then just the two leads relationship. The world doesn’t revolve around their relationship. It feels... alive? I guess? At least more so than most Shoujo manga I read.

reblog if you hate summer
I’m curious. I get so much ‘Summer is so wonderful!’ shoved in my face and I cannot stand it. reblog if you cannot stand summer and you are more of an autumn, early winter type of person.
Summer can eat a bag of dicks, tbh. I wouldn’t mind skipping right to October and prancing happily into autumn and winter.
wanting and not wanting at the same time
a comic for asexual awareness week
bringing this back today for the start of pride month. still overwhelmed by how well this comic went down and with how many people relate. it’s easy to think aro-ace people are all totally accepting of their identities and really proud of who they are. i guess on websites like this you see a lot of people proudly putting their identity in their bio, a flag in their profile picture.
in fact i think a lot of aro-ace people really hate that part of themselves, hide it, and struggle for a long time to ‘accept’ who they are and feel any sense of ‘pride’. that’s the feeling i wanted to capture here. the disappointment, the loneliness, upon realising that you can’t feel what is such a wonderful thing. the embarrassment of not being ‘normal’, of being some random sexuality that nobody irl has heard of, and letting down those around you because you can’t be who they want you to be. how desperately you want to change, how desperately you want to feel. but you just can’t.
i know not all aro-ace people feel like this. i know lots of aro and/or ace people feel able to be in relationships, to feel closeness and have partners in other ways. but i think it’s important to be aware that some aro-ace people do feel like this.
the comments on this comic have mostly been great but a few have been very frustrating. a comment it got a lot was along the lines of ‘aw!! you don’t need to have sex to be in a relationship!’. you completely missed the point, hah. this is not a comic about sex. it’s about a lack of feeling, the lack of something beautiful other people seem to have. another comment that popped up a few times was ‘maybe she’s a lesbian’. well maybe lesbians and aro/ace girls have more in common than people think - maybe they both often struggle to accept that they feel no attraction to men, even though society has conditioned them to do so, sometimes spending years trying to force themselves to like men in that way, when they just can’t.
this comic is called ‘wanting and not wanting at the same time’ because she wants to love. but when it comes down to the reality, she can’t fulfil the requirements of that. she wants to love someone forever, to get married and have children and grow old with her soulmate, but she doesn’t want it with this person. or that person. or anyone she meets or will ever meet. a sort of catch 22, i guess.
hope that makes sense. thanks for listening, and have a lovely pride month ❤️
i’m simple….this is my fav character dynamic
