Warning to writers

While you are worrying about whether beta readers will steal your ideas, there is a more genuine threat on the horizon.

When offered a publishing contract, please do all your research before you sign. There are a number of fakes and scammers out there, as well as good-intentioned amateurs that don’t know how to get your work to a wide audience. I won’t tell the heartbreaking stories here - there are too many.

Being published badly is worse than being never published.

It can destroy your career and your dreams.

The quick check is to google the publishing house name + scam or warning.

But, to be sure, check with these places first. They aren’t infallible (nothing is) but they can help you protect yourself. They are written and maintained by expereinced writers, editors, publishers and legal folks.

There are days when I am having a horrible day. There are days where I hate being a teacher. Today was one of them. I say was, because every time I read this letter it makes me feel better. It makes me cry big tears of joy that one student realized how much I love and care about them. How I take their fears and hopes and wants home with me. I think about how they will grow up and how I can help them make all their dreams come true. It becomes emotionally draining when things go awry in a lesson or you have a student who is just a brat. You start to doubt yourself. You start to think you suck at this teaching thing. Maybe you should get into supply chain management, that will be good...

The worst is when you start getting bitter and angry. You start to loathe your classes. You start holding grudges against students. Today was one of those days, where I wanted to yell at students and I went home and cried. I was done. I don’t care about these kids. I can’t care. I have nothing left.

Then, all it took is one student to remind me that I have it all. I really do. One student to say thank you and I am done with my pity party and am ready to take on tomorrow.

So thank you Alex, for being the student who took time out to remind me that I do care and why I care. I care about students because they are people. They are humans who deserve to have every person possible cheering them on and helping them figure this stupid crazy world out. I truly appreciate everything you have done for me Alex.

I know you are reading this. Sorry about the weird stuff I reblog from time to time. I don’t think you are surprised at all. When you get back into town we should hang out, and when you turn 21 I am totally buying you a drink.
