"Walking the Road"
A short comic inspired by the folklore developed and shared within the Troubled Teen Industry. "Walking the road" is a phrase to refer to AWOL'ing from a program, it is the height of heroism and bravery. Tales valorizing young heroes who escape and spend months hitchhiking back home are shared as inspiration, and sometimes as warning.
In some programs, walking the road was seen as a rite of passage despite few ever making it far or even off program grounds.
From a project about forbidden lesbian dating in treatment/rehab. Queer relationships weren't allowed, so many secret couples would pass notes in shared notebooks to communicate without being subject to staff scrutiny (which would lead to being forcibly separated and forbidden from talking and touching each other). Many of these notebooks were eventually stolen and destroyed by staff.
This was a draft for a student publication. I still like it far more than the final piece I did, for obvious reasons.
