She always did love to dance.
When the House Fell || Solo
Alice had agreed to go. She knew exactly what was going to happen at the bridge, she was going to be told to hurt people. And she would. Because Mateus wanted her to. He asked her to. She couldn't say no to him. And so that afternoon, she walked right up to Emerson and Jackson and hugged them both goodbye. She was going on a trip to London, she told them, which wasn't a lie. She would bring them presents if they wanted, she told them which wasn't a lie. She was told she'd be back before dinner, she told them, which wasn't a lie. She'd be just fine, she told them.
That was a lie.
Alice knew, this was the last storm she'd see in her life. She could feel it. Her power had been running amok inside of her, breaking down things she probably needed. But she couldn't do any more damage, not if she could help it.
Alice was fine, on the way there. She sat in the furthest back seat in the van, turned as far away from anyone else as possible. Keeping quiet, ignoring the mocking tones when people spoke about her, the side-glances at the feral girl, skinny, dirty, underfed, underslept, angry, scared feral girl, who probably looked as dangerous as she really was. Not that Alice would attack unprovoked.
She ran and hid, the second they got out. She wanted no part of this. Mat asked her to come, he never asked her to hurt people. And she watched, peeking out from behind a tower, clutching the corner of the wall in fear. She felt the panic rising with the chaos, both around and within her. But she could control it, she could push it down and let it eat at her, and not at the people or the bridge around her.
It was working. It was. No-one was getting hurt because of her, nothing was being destroyed because of the storm that was ripping at the walls of her body. And for a moment, she thought she could do it. She could make it home and go back to her brothers and to Kit and everything would be all right. And then Mat fell. She had been watching him, he was the only important person here, he couldn't be hurt.
But there was one sound, one big release of thunder, and he fell. Alice screamed. She screamed, and ran, first towards him, and then away. As far away as possible. She couldn't keep it in. She couldn't keep anyone safe. Cracks appeared in the bridge wherever she stepped and widened if she lingered for only a second, and so she ran, breaking through the barrier of the bridge, unaffected by whatever force had been keeping the people on the bridge. Alice ran, and ran, and she did not stop running until she found the ocean. And still, she ran. The water was huge, and grey, and terrifying, and she still ran.
And then Alice couldn't keep the storm at bay any longer. The house fell.
Hey Alice
Oh, that’s a good idea! We can make a bridge out of sticks and paper.
Okay. Let's start now, okay? 'S gonna be fun.
Hey Alice
Yeah, fun.
All you do is pack the sand into the bucket, tip the bucket down and you have part of the castle.
Can we make it fancy? Can make a bridge with sticks. 'R a door, 'r something.
Hey Alice
Don’t be sorry, Alice. It’s okay.
Can we do something fun now? How does the sand castle work?
Hey Alice
I won’t make you do anything you don’t want to. Ever. Don’t think that.
Okay. Thank you, Jackson. Sorry, Jackson.
Hey Alice
Yeah, but it’s just different.
Please don't make me go swimming, Jackson.
Hey Alice
But it’s fun.
You feel different, like weightless. Easier to dance.
But dancing's easy already, see? I don't need to be weightless. Not in water.
Hey Alice
No it’s not. You’ve never wanted to go swimming or anything?
Nope.
Hey Alice
returns with the water
See? Safe and sound. Water isn’t mean.
Still water. 'S sneaky like that.
Hey Alice
shouts from the shorefront It’s okay Alice! I’ll be right back!
walks into the water about-knee deep and fills a bucket half-way with water.
Don't...don't, don't, Jackson, don't fall in, okay? No falling in!
Hey Alice
We’re gonna need a little bit of water. I’ll go get that. You can see that water is nice.
'M gonna...wait here. Is that okay? Away from the water?
Hey Alice
Um, we can build sand castles. I used to do it all the time when I was younger.
Okay. Sounds like fun.
Hey Alice
Yeah, It is nice. I’m glad you like it.
What do you do at the beach, 'sides from swimming, and airplanes, and dancing?
Hey Alice
The sand is nice. I like the sand.
I haven't been on sand since I was little. Forgot, it's fun to dance on it.
