hi love. i can’t decide for everyone, but as a bi woman and a bi black woman, i honestly say it was never intended for LGBTQ usage. black people during the 20th century steadily called each other sister and brother whether of not we knew one another. we’d say it to complete strangers and our closest friends.

i don’t consider it cultural appropriation or anything, but generations still living today turned a mere noun into a greeting. saying ‘hey sis!, ‘sista’, ‘brotha’— it was all produced by black people in the 60s-70s as an acknowledgement to the other black people in the vicinity. and if it wasn’t an acknowledgement, it was used in questionings; i.e. ‘is he a brotha?’ or ‘she a sista or she white?’— this case is about asking whether or not the person mentioned is black or not.

but the thing is, a lot of the popular and renown slang words we use today were made up and locally used in the black community specifically; this is African American Vernacular English (AAVE). words like ‘swag’ and ‘fleek’ ‘deadass’— 98% of the english slang words GLOBALLY were boosted and invented by black men and women. we were always considered ignorant and stupid until a white person began using the term, and suddenly it was cool and hip! but the minority who made the expression is never acknowledged in any way.

for example, the word ‘ain’t’ was originally part of high english, but once it trickled down to the field slaves and they began saying it, the word was abandoned by wealthy and poor whites alike because it was now ‘tainted’. since the time of european imperialism there’s been a troupe of black people/minorities poisoning whiteness; we do it it’s outlawed, white people do it and they get to go on ellen and meet the president.

as a bi black woman, i can and will speak for everyone, ‘Sis’ is not for the LGBTQ community unless they’re black. but then again, most of the LGBTQ community has benefited and rode on the back of black women.

I just saw people saying it one day and I was like wow I love this. Just in case anyone wants the context: He has been making music in Chicago, he recently performed to a large audience and met London on da track, who offered him an opportunity in LA. She didn’t want to leave Chicago because of her business there. He told her that she doesn’t have to go, he just needs to do this for his music. She got upset because he straight up told her that he valued his career over their relationship and she did this. 

Now I’m not a relationship expert, but I will never understand how some of y’all expect people to put you above the shit they have to do. Always put your career, your job, your livelihood first.
