re: eiffel's relationship with kate, i think it's worth keeping in mind:
kate had an unplanned pregnancy towards the end of their relationship. it seems they agreed that eiffel would be in anne's life as long as he got cleaned up, but he was always a visitor. they didn't live together. anne has kate's last name, and kate was her primary caregiver.
so: it's not a recent breakup. the timeline seems shorter because of the way eiffel tells it, but the events of it span years.
to tell his story in limbo, he has to make it a story. he keeps himself at a distance and provides context in third person, until "i didn't even make it onto the freeway." if it feels impersonal, that's why. that's what the story's about - that he feels he's "just those mistakes."
"things get real sid and nancy" suggests kate might have had her own struggles with addiction.
that potentially adds context to what he's choosing to talk around / omit in the lines "they started going out because... well, because he's had worse ideas" and "[kate] freaks out, because... well, because she has a brain."
even so, he still gets some shots in at her, calling her "his dream girl or his nightmare demon monster from the black lagoon" (jury's still out!) and "our story's angel-slash-demon-slash-ex-girlfriend."
beyond that, there's very little we can know for sure, and eiffel very purposefully does not say much about kate or about the details of their relationship... but he still kind of says a lot. what we can say for sure is that it's impossible to talk about why it fell apart without talking about addiction. i think it's pretty clearly portrayed as intense and ill-advised, that kate getting pregnant with anne was the wake up call they needed to rearrange their priorities, that the severity of kate's reaction to eiffel's relapse speaks volumes, and that, even despite eiffel's guilt, he still clearly has some lingering feelings of resentment. a lot went wrong, but i don't think the problem was ever disinterest.
