The Foxhole Court and All for the game series put better than how I could say it.
The Foxhole Court
“Hope was a dangerous, disquieting thing, but he thought perhaps he liked it.”
It’s hard to for me to do a spoiler free review for this first book but I’ll try. I’m going to leave the OMG stuff until the next review.
(So I’ll start with a trigger warning; this book contains violence, drink, drugs, sex, swearing, abuse and mental health. It’s milder in The Foxhole Court but the violence amps up throughout the rest of the series.)
The Foxhole Court begins with Neil being given the opportunity to play the (fictional) sport of Exy for the Palmetto Foxes at Palmetto University. Think a cross of lacrosse and very violent hockey. The Foxes are a team of talented misfits on the verge of dropping out of their league. I use the word team loosely, as the Foxes are hardly what you would call a united group at the beginning. They all have a past, however, Neil has secrets of his own. He has been on the run from his crime boss father for years and has recently lost his mother. Where it gets interesting is that Neil recognizes one of the Foxes, former champion Kevin, from a time in his past, but does Kevin realise who Neil really is? For someone who’s always been looking over his shoulder, the story sees Neil struggling with the choice of fight or flight, finding somewhere he could belong for the first time and something worth caring about. His arrival has an effect on all of the Foxes and the team. By the end of the book you’ll be going straight on to book two, you only have to read reviews on Amazon to see I wasn’t the only one that stayed up all night binge reading!
At first, I wondered where all of these characters were going to fit, and who was who, but their personalities come through and make it easy to distinguish. Each one is important to the development in one way or another. By the second book I cared about each one to some degree. Whilst the writing in this isn’t completely polished, what the author has achieved in making me feel made up for it.
I will say it right here, I’m not a sports fan. You do not need to be to enjoy this story. If you are into sports however, you are going to be interested in the team dynamic and the match scenes. The Exy match scenes held my interest, and I liked how not every match was written about in great detail, just the important ones. These action scenes were done in a way that made me feel like I was watching from the side, and as it’s a fictional sport, it didn’t matter that I don’t understand every sports term. Team spirit is catching.
What I liked most was how the reader was drip-fed information about the different characters pasts throughout the book. It keeps you reading as you are intrigued to find out what’s going on and why they are behaving the way they do, in particular with Neil. It’s written in a way where you’re not confused with what’s going on, but you are still sort of in the dark about some motives and needing to know more.
I also loved the characters, and what kept me reading was trying to find out if any of them had any redeemable qualities. Stick with me here; the Foxes are a messed up bunch, and from the start do not seem the nicest of folks, but as the book goes on, they seem more human. As they grow on Neil, they grow on the reader.
I would recommend this book to those who like character driven novels, who enjoy a cat-and-mouse mystery and secrets, and to those who like finding out what makes people tick. This book is raw. It’s not sunshine and rainbows. This is not for those that can’t handle troubled and at times unlikeable characters. This story isn’t for those that are overly critical of plot points, the plot with Neil’s family back story can seem far-fetched at first, but if you were to continue with the series you would see how it falls into place.
The first in the series is currently free on Amazon, and the others are low priced. They are not particularly long books either, so with that I think you should all take a chance on the Foxes.
You know when sometimes you meet someone so beautiful and then you actually talk to them, and five minutes later they’re as dull as a brick? Then there’s other people, and you meet them and think, not bad, they’re okay. And then you get to know them, and their face just sort of becomes them, like their personality’s written all over it. And they just turn into something so beautiful. Rory’s the most beautiful man I’ve ever met.
Listen… I’ve been thinking…

Okay, personal ramble coming up. At this point I’m pretty sure I’d appreciate every advice you guys could give me.
So, I’m turning 28 this month. Till this day I’ve never been in a relationship, never had sex, never kissed anybody, never flirted and probably never had a real crush on anyone.
The problem is… I want all of this. I’m scared as hell but I w a n t t h i s ! But like… not with too much commitment. It’d be great to get some experience first. I kind of feel like I missed out on stuff. I’m 27. Guys my age start losing their hair and thinking about a family. I’m okay with family. More than okay. I w a n t a child. Badly. But not with the first guy I “try”? I start feeling pressured concerning my biological clock. Lately I hear it ticking. A lot. Collegues only a few years older than me start getting married and having babies. And I want one too. But first I really want to go through all the other stuff. And time is starting to run out! (I won’t even start talking about stuff my mum says… You know mums.) I know I’m not too old. I know there are other people like me out there. I know I shouldn’t try to force it. But there have been zero steps in the right direction.
I got hit on by a guy exactly two times in my life. In both cases I panicked and said no. In both cases I think I wasn’t interested and it probably turned out the right way. Two guys in 28 years. I’m proud of myself for not feeling completely insecure about my looks or worse my personaility! But I know I’m okay. I like the way I look, I have friends. It might be possible that I just don’t “get it” sometimes or block every move someone might try before it even happenes. That sounds like me. But I’m not doing it on purpose. What I am doing on purpose is avoiding “flirting grounds” (clubs, bars, parties) I don’t drink I don’t dance. I’m shy, I’m a chicken but most of all I really don’t enjoy myself in those situations.
I was okay with being alone. Although I get really frustated at times… But a year ago I started to get nervous. I tried a Dating-App as I’m obviously not able to find someone offline. Spoiler: The App didn’t work either.
Omg did I mention how picky I am?! Plus I seem to need to know a guy really well to start getting interested.
Oh, concerning the crush-thing. I do have crushes on characters in books and Tv-shows, sometimes on celebrities. I do think about what might happen with guys in my social circle (although there aren’t a lot available guys around anymore. But this was different at school. You get the idea.) or in certain situations but nothing ever happened. There was this one guy I met online when I was like 16 but he lived in another country and didn’t seem to be a hundred percent into it anyways. And then there was this other guy I met over the summer. But I only started liking him after he left.
With all this said… A year ago I talked to a friend in a similar position and she mentiond that she might be asexual. I said I wasn’t because I wanted all that stuff plus I didn’t like putting lables on everythig… I’m jush shy and awkward. But it made me google and well, maybe I am. As if it wasn’t hard enough already. But the fact that I might be some kind of asexual might be the reason why it is that hard. Right? Maybe I do need to put a lable on it to understand myself better.
Only you can define yourself, of course, but I’m happy to talk with you as well as throw around some terms! I would suggest looking onto the ace spectrum. Gray-asexuality is kinda a catch-all term for a lot of acespec identities that you may be interested in. The Many Ways to Be Between is one of my favorite pieces ever on grayasexuality: https://asexualagenda.wordpress.com/2012/08/08/many-ways-to-be-between/ Here’s a pretty thorough article on a bunch of more specific asexual spectrum identities: http://www.rebelcircus.com/blog/demisexual-cupiosexual-aromantic-many-different-forms-asexuality/ Particularly, I wonder if you might like the term cupiosexual. https://www.asexuality.org/en/topic/114673-what-exactly-is-cupiosexual/ Actually, I would also look into lithsexuality - maybe even lithromanticism as well: http://aromantic.wikia.com/wiki/Lithromantic As for the rest, if you don’t mind some unwanted advice (otherwise just ignore this), it kind of sounds like you’ve painted this really specific path for yourself where you have to follow it exactly to get what you want. If you really want to try dating or you really want a kid, don’t be afraid to step out of the box! There’s more than one way to live your life or follow your life’s path. Maybe you have a kid first and date later. Maybe you let loose a little and try more dating apps. Maybe you say yes to the next (non-creepy) man who asks. (Just because you go on one date with them doesn’t mean you have to go on more!) If there’s something else holding you back, maybe spend some time thinking on what that is so that you don’t have to sit here stewing in uncertainty and anxiety. ^^ Feel free to message me to talk or (or to block me if you don’t want me to interact at all - I’ll delete my reblog if you want)!
hey, thanks for your answer. I'm still not sure if I'm on the right track here but it helps to read more.
I always thought I didn't have too specific plans for my future. But maybe you are right. I'm at a point in my life where everything else is running great and there's only the one thing missing. Maybe that's why I'm starting to realise it.

Leigh Bardugo books: “I would come for you. And if I couldn’t walk I’d crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we’d fight our way out together - knives drawn, pistols blazing. Because that’s what we do. We never stop fighting.”
Also Leigh Bardugo books: “my ghost won’t associate with your ghost.”
pain is easy to portray, but to use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world, no one had ever done it before. perhaps no one ever will again. to my mind, that strange, wild man who roamed the fields of Provence was not only the world’s greatest artist, but also one of the greatest men who ever lived.
