So after seeing some more rancid takes + after seeing the results of my previous poll, I need to ask:

What's the most popular Star Wars fanon misconceptions that you HATE?

Attachments = love/the Jedi non-attachment policy is toxic and abusive

The Jedi Order kidnapped children and was a cult

The Empire was right, actually

The Jedi Order thought that all emotion was bad and needed to be supressed

Option 1 - Not a Misconception

Attachments do equal love.

First thing first, the entire plot of AOTC falls apart if Anakin was actually allowed to marry Padmé.

Oh, but Anakin COULD'VE married Padmé, but his love for her was unhealthy!

Anakin couldn't have married Padmé. If what really stopped Anakin from being allowed to marry Padmé was the inherent unhealthiness of their relationship, how would the Jedi even catch them? Anakin simply saying "I have a wife, and she is Senator Amidala" isn't immediately going to come off as bad unless *gasp* they actually perceived getting married as bad, which the Jedi do.

There's also the Shmi debacle, in which Jedi-Positives casually forget that Anakin would not obsess over Shmi nearly as much as he did if he knew she was safe.

Option 2 - Misconception

You're right. This is a misconception. The Force is clearly good and evil.

Option 3 - Nuanced

You're right; the Jedi didn't technically kidnap children as they did so under Republic rules, but there are definitely questions to be raised as to how early on children are taken.

Yes, Jedi are allowed to leave, but by that point, they have effectively no choice but to stay with the Jedi Order; they have no connections to their family or friends, and they've lived their entire lives in the Temple.

Option 4 - Nuanced

The Empire was definitely the bad guys, and anyone who says they're good are largely contrarian. However, the Empire didn't replace some perfect, benevolent democracy. The Galactic Republic was very obviously crumbling even before the Clone Wars, and in certain ways, the Galactic Empire was an improvement from the Republic, simply due to the fact that it wasn't falling apart.

The Republic vs Empire is basically chaotic, crumbling democracy vs brutal dictatorship. Both are definitely bad, but force anyone to take a pick, and many will choose the latter.

Option 5 - Not a Misconception

Maybe that's not what the Jedi intended, but based off of what they teach younger Jedi, that's definitely not what they encouraged.

When you teach younger Jedi that bad emotions are a gateway drug to the Dark Side, that's naturally going to fall on itself, even if it is technically true. It's like saying "drugs are bad" to a drug addict; what you are saying is true, but it won't do anything.

At best, the Jedi were grossly underprepared to raise pupils who know anything other than Jedi life.

Option 6 - Nuanced

Luke, Leia, and Han were definitely not abusive, and Kylo definitely had a very weak reason to go to the Dark Side, but I do feel like Leia and Han in particular weren't good parents, even if not abusive.

Even in Legends, Leia and Han were portrayed as being largely absent, which isn't abusive but still not very good parenting, and this was one of the reasons Jacen Solo fell to the Dark Side; this is probably a similar situation for Kylo.

Option 7 - Not a Misconception

First off, did you ever come to question where the song title "Across the Stars" comes from?

Secondly, George Lucas, one of the most pro-Jedi people out there, even said himself that Anakin and Padmé were inspired by tragic romances. The Knight (Anakin) falling in love with the Queen (Padmé) in a forbidden love is even found here.

I love me some post Mustafar Padme lives/Vader redemption fics but i feel like the ones that have him completely heal/become Anakin looking suit less Vader do not get it™️

I mean, I get that people treat the burns as the consequences of Anakin's actions, and I can definitely see the idea that people who have Anakin be healed mostly want him to look handsome again (because I have fallen into that trap, too, lol). That being said, there is justification for it.

GL has stated that Anakin's burns are a representation of his darkness, so when he redeems himself in ROTJ, Anakin's Force Ghost is completely healed, symbolizing his redemption.

In a Vader Redemption fic, the redemption would be a slow burn as opposed to the heroic sacrifice that ROTJ has, so Vader healing would be a slow process that is completed when he finally kills Palpatine.

Also, from a purely logical, in-universe perspective, Vader definitely could've healed. When his mask is taken off in ROTJ, we do see scars and pale skin, but his face is mostly intact, all while in a suit that constantly tortured him. With some surgeries, sunlight, and a hair transplant, he'd mostly look just fine again.

"OH, but there should be things that Anakin can't get back. Permanent consequences."

His limbs, lol. People nowadays forget that Anakin didn't just burn on Mustafar; he was also dismembered. Anakin is just a head, torso, and his upper right arm. Him healing isn't going to give those limbs back.

The fanbase's arguments over the Jedi Order would be a lot more peaceful if they acknowledge that George Lucas is not very consistent with his beliefs and that there are many different writers/directors with varying opinions

so, there was this one anidala-related post recently about some whiny fans going on about how padmé had never loved anyone but anakin even though she dated clovis before and i was wondering what are your thoughts on this? after all, you did make a recent post about how anidala was supposed to be a fairytale romance and how you hated the tcw2008 version

I'm guessing that you're referring to the idea that Padmé loved someone before Anakin.

I don't mind its existence. Besides, Palo was brought up in AOTC, so it's not like TCW was the first to give Padmé an ex, even if Palo's relationship with Padmé was more of a childhood crush rather than a serious romance.

The mere existence of Clovis as Padmé's ex doesn't bother me as failed first relationships happen all the time; I really just hated the way this was used to leverage Anakin's portrayal as a toxic husband and to portray Anidala in a negative light, specifically in S6. If I were tasked with writing TCW myself though, I would've never invented an ex for Padmé unless I want a character I can use as a punching bag.

Anyway, I'm not so much clinging onto Padmé never loving anyone but Anakin but more so Anakin being the one to take Padmé's v-card (and vice versa). I still believe Anakin and Padmé were each other's first.

If not Anakin though, the handmaidens maybe, but I'd likely only use that backstory for an erotica involving Anakin x Padmé x Handmaidens. I tend to not like ships involving Anakin w/o Padmé or Padmé w/o Anakin, but the ship will be much better if it is a threesome involving Anidala (i.e. I don't like sabedala, but I can enjoy sabeanidala; I've even written one with that a long time ago). Anyway, I'm already going off-topic, so bye.

i know you're a huge anidala fan but what are your thoughts on Padmé kills Vader AUs?

I personally think it's completely OOC for Padmé to do that, just like how in canon, Anakin choking Padmé is supposed to be seen as an OOC moment for Anakin. That's not to say that Anakin can just get away with choking Padmé because it's OOC; it's just that it's clearly meant to be seen as not how Anakin usually is and is there to portray how far Anakin had fallen.

I don't mind this trope existing if it's clearly meant to be portrayed as an evil, but it rarely is; it is usually portrayed as something justified or something done for the greater good.

There was this one what-if done by Fantasy Folklore a few weeks ago about "What if Padmé killed Anakin on Mustafar?". The way it's executed as if it was some sort of greater good type of deed or something justifiable just made me mad. Granted, it's a what-if, so it's less about being a narrative and more about realism, but still.

What really annoyed me though is that Padmé doesn't seem very guilty about it. Whenever she has any sad feelings about it, it's always portrayed as her being sad about Anakin's betrayal rather than her feeling guilty for murdering her husband, as if she blames someone else for it. This feels a lot like Vader coping with choking Padmé by saying that Anakin did it and not him, but the difference is we know Vader is coping and is just lying to make himself feel better while in these AUs, Padmé's coping is not portrayed as coping but rather a correct observation.

If Padmé had actually killed Vader on Mustafar, it would have haunted her for the rest of her life, just like how Vader was haunted by choking Padmé for the rest of his life. It should haunt her because killing family members is always evil.

"Oh, but Padmé is good while Vader is bad - it's not evil when she does it!"

The thing is killing family members, regardless of the context and morality of said family member, has ALWAYS been portrayed as an evil act in Star Wars. You need not look any further than in ROTJ; Luke killing Vader (who, by the way, had a much worse record by this point than he did at ROTS) is invariably portrayed as being an evil act, and Luke doing the right thing requires him reaching out to whatever good Vader has left.

So, if Luke killing Vader is evil, then maybe it's also evil when Padmé does it, too.

Sure.

Padmé has a Black Card granted to her from her time as queen which allows her to buy mostly whatever she wants. Apart from using it for necessity, she mostly uses it to buy new outfits, and more importantly, invest in Anakin's account.

During the Clone Wars, Padmé registered a bank account for Anakin on Naboo under a pseudonym and threw in lots of money into that bank account. Even though they are a couple and will live together, she wants to make sure Anakin is financially stable.

After leaving the Jedi Order after the Clone Wars, Anakin used the account and changed the name of the account to his actual name. Anakin mostly uses the account to buy all sorts of tech and mechnos which he would obviously be into as well as videogames. Apart from that, Padmé (who has left the Senate) has been urging Anakin to freshen up his wardrobe now that he's no longer a Jedi and filthy rich, so he also uses them on new clothes whenever Padmé takes him for shopping.

Padmé and Anakin would be an idle rich couple, but they prefer to stay away from the spotlight and raise their children in peace. Padmé still consistently pours money into Anakin's account, but I do believe Anakin may distinguish himself at some point and get his own Black Card. Hell, if he milks his Hero with No Fear status for all its worth, he may as well already get that Black Card not long after retirement.

what are your thoughts on househusband anakin??

I don't really hate the idea on its own, but fanon has basically ruined the idea of househusbands for me because 90% of the time they headcanon a character as a househusband, it's a gateway drug to that character being turned into a pet trophy husband.

This is a common attitude in Anidala (and m/f relationship) fanon: they all but emasculate Anakin, turning him into a total dumbass unable to do anything on his own with his defining trait being his worship of Padmé. I wouldn't mind if Anakin basically worshipped Padmé if Padmé also treated him in a similar regard, but no, they always make it so that either Padmé can barely tolerate Anakin or Padmé treats him as a pet. Additionally, they masculinize Padmé to new heights, turning her into this unfeeling girlboss who only cares about her work.

Additionally, this also implies that Padmé wouldn't have stopped working, when she definitely would have. I made a post about this a while ago.

I do believe Anakin would perform household duties well; his training under the Jedi would've definitely taught him that as part of survival training. I just don't think that immediately means "househusband."

“1987″ is an old fanfic of mine that I wrote back in 2020, and after looking back at it now, I realize how much ketamine I was on when I wrote it. It has no plotline, just brings in time travel halfway through (the OG upload didn’t have Time Travel in the tags because I came up with it halfway through as I didn’t know how the plot could go), happens all in one week, and is generally unhinged.

On 1 April, I deleted it out of shame, but after finding out that it is good in an ironic “so bad it’s good” way, I am here to reupload it, for you crazy kriffers who might be into this kind of fanfiction.

you know what would have been funny? i was busy thinking of some Imperial! Anidala AUs and there's one which just crossed my mind.

Imagine Padmé joins Vader on Mustafar, Vader beats Obi, and kills Sidious to take over. Vader tries to deepen his connection to the Dark Side as he and Padmé rule over the galaxy. Vader tries to portray himself as this evil, fearsome autocrat but is way too popular: he doesn't create the Death Star because neither he nor Padmé likes it, he abolishes slavery because duh, literally all of the clones (they don't get replaced) love him, he's still seen as the war hero, he's very handsome, and Padmé's presence + coregency mellows him out a lot. Padmé and his children are also there, and his love for them is wayyyyyy too much that he isn't nearly as evil and dark as he should be

Eventually, Vader comes to Padmé crying about how his connection to the Dark Side is weakening because of how much he loves her and the children and how he can't fuel his inner darkness anymore. He isn't really a Sith anymore and eventually Padmé convinces him to just let it go, renounce his darkness, and let the love flow through him so now he's just emperor anakin, former jedi and failed sith

I hate the idea of Anakin leaving the Jedi and being Padmé's "trophy husband" not only because Padmé would never wish for Anakin to just be her trophy but also because it implies that Padmé wouldn't have stopped working.

By the time she was no longer queen, Padmé had already considered retirement but continued working when she was offered the position of senator. If she was already considering leaving, Anakin and the kids would've been the ones to push her over the line and get her to retire.

Happy Ending Anidala wouldn't have been a sexy rich senator/mother with a pretty trophy husband she has all to herself; it would have been a sexy rich retired couple in their 20s who have each other.

I always felt that Padme and Anakin’s sexual relationship was more mutual. It switches between who initiates and sometimes they’re hot and heavy and other times they take it slow. Padme would enjoy riding Anakin once and awhile like the scene from Annihilation.

Do you think it would be Anakin who sets the tone of their sex life more?

I think their sexual relationship is indeed mutual. It's just that it is Anakin who kicks it off more (though not by much - Padmé kicks it off quite often as well) while Padmé is the one who's along for the ride (no pun intended). If Padmé wanted to set the tone, however, she could easily do so, just as Anakin could easily set the tone when he wants to. It really just depends on who is the first to get horny.

I think Anakin and Padmé probably prefer the more energetic sex throughout the war, but when they really get to settle down (happy ending post-RoTS), they'll prefer the slower types.

you know, for as much shit I give to tcw for portraying anidala poorly, i will give it some credit for showing anakin as trying to put his foot down in a relationship and have padmé see him as an equal. it fits well with his more dominant nature in rots. they shouldn't have made him too controlling though because they kinda overdid it
