* all i can think about is how i don’t want to be seen , that if i don’t get back inside soon i’m going to miss the rest of this golden girls re - run , and how i’ll have to wait another two weeks before i can catch it again. my fingertips itch for the twist of the doorknob , and my ears salivate for of the click of the lock behind me. it’s hard to talk to him this way and seem present when the only thing i can seem to do is ruminate on the idea of getting away. i’ve wasted too many nights picking at my brain , wondering how my mom could love my father but not want to be in the same room as him , to never bring herself to look at him or even touch him. but i think i understand now. we’ve been meeting this way a lot , recently , neil and i. my doorstep seems to be our convergence point , the gray area where we both come together only to circumvent each other and mince our words.
the entire scene is all very john hughes and equally as underwhelming: twilight is cast on a soft september evening. some cheesy arctic monkeys song plays softly overhead. teen heart - throb wears his heart on his sleeve and awaits the response from his homely , but - not - like - the - other - girls , love interest after heedlessly betraying her trust. does she take him back ? ❛ you act like i’m supposed to have all the answers. ❜
❝ i was hoping somebody might. ❞ . . . and just like that his role is assumed : post - breakup apology starring neil perry as lovesick boy next door. a role played with puppy dog eyes and a sorry sort of smile – rom - com love interest, unassuming and charming in a way you can’t quite resist. he looks the part, with his big doe eyes and floppy brown hair pulled right from the cover of a teen magazine. and yet the role only carries as far as his face, his hands in constant motion at his sides, one tugging at a hole in his jeans while the other picks at a hang - nail. hands that seem off in this movie, this scene that’s been played so many times it may as well be cliche, where the boy makes his big apology and is forgiven as the music swells – teenage love prevailing. happy ending for everyone . . .
