Beth's eyes left the field to glance up at the game clock. It was tied up twenty-one to twenty-one with less than two minutes remaining. The team needed the win, not only because it was homecoming week, but because they were facing the Southfield Tigers, their long-time rivals. The very team that defeated them by ten points in last year's championship game.

“Red 18… Red 18” Dean yelled, pointing to one of the defensive players, before signaling for the snap. “hut”.

Dean stepped back, remaining in the pocket until he could find an open receiver. It took awhile, but eventually Stan was able to break away and rush down the field.

Sneaking in another Good Girls WIP Wednesday snippet at the wire. This is from the long delayed Ch2 of Digging In, which is long delayed because evidently I can't write phone sex that isn't ludicrous.

Rio's laughter poured over the line, an abrupt and richly hoarse bark of mirth almost. “Oh, don't be mad, mama. Can't blame me for stopping by for more of your cooking.” He somehow managed to play along enough to make it sound very sexual, while also clearly enjoying her embarrassment and mocking her.

Let it never be said that he couldn't multi-task almost as well as Beth. And that he was kind of an asshole.

“You could've at least helped dig," Beth pointed out, much less seductively because he was being a bit of a jerk, and she maybe felt the red flames of that embarrassment creeping up her chest. She did this all while resolutely ignored Annie's voice saying in in Beth's canyon in her head.

“Yeah, I don't do that,” Rio responded with a quickly casual resolve. Of course he didn't. “Perks of being the King, darlin’. Don't have to do the digging anymore.”

In fact it might be time for me to do another re-read. (It's unfinished, and it doesn't start with her working at the bakery, but it's them meeting young and ending up in business together, and it's such an enjoyable read.)

Young Beth out of sheer desperation or just whimsy however you want to run with it- starts to dabble in a life of crime in her own girly pop way- I read this fic a long time back about her working in a bakery and baking drug-filled confectionary😭 (if someone remembers please rec)- yes so young Beth just trips and falls and wades into doing some mild criminal activity- meets young Rio who’s just starting out and has a lot to prove - some tension there- maybe they step on each others toes- maybe there’s some reluctant partnership, maybe they end up joining forces and being a young up-and-coming power couple🤭🤭. We could also do some exploration on Race and how Rio got into crime and how his life and experience as a young, poor brown man in a majority non-white city like Detroit is VASTLY different from Beth’s experience as a poor-ish, white woman (who has a neglectful at best parent.) We can also look similarities like how both, in a way became criminals due to financial necessity and also as a form of self-empowerment (Beth especially) as people who feel like they lack power in their lives. But also how different even that is really because how they are perceived by society. (Goody two shoes Beth who looks like she goes to church vs Young Rio who’s perceived as a threat at 15-16 etc)

Anyway this was supposed to be one prompt in a list but honestly my word vomit can be considered as seperate prompts. Please send recs or take inspiration- I’m starving😭

For fans of Beth and Rio’s utter ridiculousness, behold… A thing that I have done is now live over on AO3.

Summary:

Forcing herself to ignore the negative comments, she kept scrolling, occasionally replying with her thanks to a particularly supportive constituent. She had almost gotten to the end when one comment in particular caught her eye. It wasn’t a criticism, but it wasn’t exactly a compliment, either. At least, not in the same way the others were.

Reading it again, Beth’s breath caught in her throat.

“Nice looking garden, Councilwoman. What fertilizer you using these days?”
