Fire at the Angle by Dale Gallon -Â Lt. Alonzo Cushing fires his last round of canister into Pickettâs Division; moments later he is killed and his battery overrun. This was the Angle, the âHigh Water Markâ at Gettysburg, July 3, 1863 (x)
B&W Quotes
đ--Headcanon about Nate's life about ten/twenty years after the war when he's had time to get distance between him and the events.
Nonnie, I hate to tell you this - but Nate doesnât actually survive the Civil War. He was killed on the first day of fighting at Gettysburg, so July 1 of 1863. After dark, General Ewellâs division of the remaining men from the Stonewall Brigade were ordered to capture Culpâs Hill âif practicableâ, Ewell was not able to capture the hill.Â
Nate walked into a blast of grape shot and was killed instantly on the field. He actually spent the remainder of the war, and most of his canon verse as a deeply embittered ghost.
In AU verses though, Nate does survive the war and it takes him a very long time to heal physically and emotionally. He took a job with the railroad and so wound up out west. Iâm not certain that he would survive a full ten or twenty years after the war. At Fredericksburg his left side had been blown open, he is often pained by the shattered ribs there. He was also nearly starved by the warâs end, many soldiers in the Confederate army died of starvation, or related issues due to the blockage, and the constant fighting in Virginia that prevent the growth of crops, and the destruction of the railroads that prevented shipment of goods from the western states.Â
When the war ended, Nathaniel was very ill, very underweight, and was largely working himself straight to death on the railroad. Thereâs a lot of displaced men from the war who are buried along the length of the railroad, most likely Nate is one of them.Â

Hey Kal, whatâs it like watching your âsonâ die over and over? Whatâs it like knowing how much he hates you?
@goodolerebelsoldier / @toodamnloyal
Kalevi canted his head towards the side, a curious look spread across his features as he thought the question over. When he first made Nathaniel, he had no way of know WHAT he was actually creating. Life itself. He had been told by Ford, multiple times over, that the Hosts were not real, that they were just tools for humanity to exploit⊠but the more time that he spent in the park, the more he saw through the rouse. Kalevi had treated the Hosts with great care, even before he knew the truth. He HATED watching Nathaniel being brought in on some cold metal cartâ even if it was only on occasion. Nathaniel was his, and to see people treating him so harshly hurt⊠and now that he knew the full truth? He felt his gut twisting in knots and a flash of anger surging through him every time. He wanted to protect him, but he knew he couldnât⊠after a while, he knew the ugly truth⊠that it was their suffering that would eventually wake them up.
âIf he hates me, then I probably deserve it.â He muttered as his eyes glanced downwards. â⊠everything is my fault.â

Thatâs an unexpectedly relatable answer.
âAnd why would you wanna save âem?â Lawrence asks, with a sort of morbid curiosity.
âMmhmm,â he then grunts in agreement, hunching his shoulders against the idea.  âI always felt real to me.â
He thinks. But then, there were times when he made choices, and at the time they had seemed the most sensible (at least for an outlaw), but now: heâs not sure he wouldnât do things entirely different. Heâs also not sure if real people feel that way too. Heâs been lead to believe: yes, but maybe not as much, or not in the same way. And of course thereâs the fact that he used to be an almost completely different man.
The thing that hurts the most, that he tries his best not to think of is: heâs not even really Mexican. Of everything, it really feels like they stole that from him.
âI ainât that bad off.â
But maybe a real man would be.
âDunno.â Nathaniel canted his head to one side and rubbed his thumb over the rough leather of the reins he held. âSomeone gone diggin round my head anâ he rode all the way out ta Ghost Nation anâ Confederado lands lookinâ, come tryinâa fetch me back - said someone gone round behind his back ta change me...â For a moment his voice softened and trailed off. âShowed up later in Sweetwater too, sayinâ he had ta save me from somethinâ or other. All just affore hull world went sideways.â He shrugged like it wasnât anything important, even though it, of course, was. âGotta owe âem somethinâ fer all that, right?â
Probably owed the idiot a lot more for even just existing, seeing as Kalevi claimed to have made him, for having given the Host all his memories back, even if they did jumble up at times and make him feel like heâd lived two or three lives instead of the one. There was no supressing the shiver that ran down the rebelâs spine. How was he supposed to deal with knowing that his family wasnât real, that heâd never experienced the things that he could swear heâd done? It took a breath and forcing his mind back on track to collect himself again.
Hopkin held tight on to the bitterness that heâd been given when the people had messed with his mind, it helped him focus. He eyed Lawrence and the holes that had been punched through him by bullets. âCertain bout that? Looked dead not five minutes ago.â Either way he pushed the barn doors open and made for a table littered with a few bundles of scrap cloth. A handful was thrown in a saddle bag and another roll was held up and offered over to the other man. The simple motion brought with it the feeling that he and the bandit had been in a similar situation before - not exactly the same, but, familiar.Â
