Why did you rate Nolan's Odyssey four white top hats out of five? What is with you and adaptations man

The thing I think that gets lost in all the discussion of this film as an adaptation, usually by people who don't know jack dick about the original work, is that Nolan has clearly done a stealth adaptation of The Aeneid and called it The Odyssey because nobody gives a shit about The Aeneid. All the Troy stuff, the whole "Civilization will return in Avengers Romesday," the Travel To The West, it's all straight out of the Aeneid. But it's also not just the Aeneid because this film is also heavily influenced by the Oresteia, and then of course it still is to some extent The Odyssey too. It's like a potpourri of several great classical works and I'll be honest it fucking owns, even if some of the lines are clunky and Nobody never makes an appearance and Nolan is still convinced dogshit audio mixing is good, actually. The final Troy flashback is incredible. Auramemnon is incredible. Sinon is incredible. I love the weird ratficification of myth here, where the Trojan War isn't about Helen it's about trade routes, where Telemachus and Penelope have these scenes of realpolitik scheming that grapple with the political reality of the ridiculous situation of the suitors.

I'm no Nolanhead, Interstellar sucks ass, but between Oppenheimer and this it's clear that whatever his faults he's on a serious cook spree right now.

Fascinating how what's considered feminine and what's considered masculine can change over time. The rebranding of being a horse girl into being a stereotypical feminine girly trait needs to be studied.

Look at classic children's novels. As recently as the 50s and early 60s, being obsessed with horses as a girl was depicted as strange and tomboyish, and the very concept of being obsessed with horses from early childhood and loving toy horses and desperately wanting your own horse being a "little girl thing" and not a "little boy thing" would send someone from the 1800s and earlier into a coma.

There's maybe a point to be made here somewhere about how when keeping and riding horses stopped being necessary to the functioning of society and became a more "frivolous" thing, it was rapidly rebranded as silly and girly and for women, but what do I know.

i wrote a paper in my masculinity studies class in college about this exact phenomenon, specifically about how high heeled shoes started as a practical way for Persian cavalry to keep their feet on their stirrups, then likely due to that association, became a popular fashion item and status symbol among the upper classes of Europe, before the Great Male Renunciation of the 18th-19th centuries, when men started shunning opulence in favor of utility, leaving them as a fashion item for women instead.

I've joked that the two genders are Aesthetic and Utility before but thats just kinda the case

Important detail: "Utility" is often not the same as actual utility. It's often the presentation of utility.

The trend a few years back for men to wear macrame bracelets and justify them as a way to always carry cordage so they could survive in the wilderness wasn't based on the actual behavior of cord that's been knotted for an extended period of time. It was based on the self-image of being someone who's likely to get into survivalist situations and excel at them. (and possibly on liking the aesthetics of the bracelet but not feeling able to choose to wear it unless it had a "utility" justification)

Feminists might kill joy simply by not finding the objects that promise happiness to be quite so promising. The word feminism is thus saturated with unhappiness. Feminists by declaring themselves as feminists are already read as destroying something that is thought of by others not only as being good but as the cause of happiness. The feminist killjoy “spoils” the happiness of others; she is a spoilsport because she refuses to convene, to assemble, or to meet up over happiness.

Does the feminist kill other people’s joy by pointing out moments of sexism? Or does she expose the bad feelings that get hidden, displaced, or negated under public signs of joy?

Does bad feeling enter the room when somebody expresses anger about things, or could anger be the moment when the bad feelings that circulate through objects get brought to the surface in a certain way?

Feminists do kill joy in a certain sense: they disturb the very fantasy that happiness can be found in certain places. To kill a fantasy can still kill a feeling. It is not just that feminists might not be happily affected by the objects that are supposed to cause happiness but that their failure to be happy is read as sabotaging the happiness of others.

This bug. This bug that, to most humans, is utterly useless, relatively gross, and completely foreign. Humans saved it because humans do not want to cause another extinction ever again if they can avoid it.
