last year when i was teaching 11th grade one of my fav students came in crying so i put the class on a filler activity and we just talked. they were doing ICE raids in the city and she was worried her parents wouldnt be there when she got home. then she was worried that ICE may come to the school and take her. we looked the laws up together and printed it out so she could carry the papers with her.Ā
it is illegal for ICE to raid a school and take children. ILLEGAL. i told my student (and eventually the class in like a blanket statement because i had quite a few undocumented students) that if anyone did come i would put my body between ICE and my students and really struggle. honestly my heart broke so much that day - take care of undocumented people in your life because they deserve so much better than this ffs. this woman is so very evil and has a black heart and i hope she rots in prison

If you have only just come online- there has been a terrorist attack in Sri Lanka. There were six explosions, three in hotels in the capital Colombo and three in churches in a number of areas. The reported death toll is somewhere between 130-160 people. The number of injured people is said to be over 400. The explosions in the churches occurred during Easter service, one of the holiest days in the Christian calendar. Nobody has yet claimed responsibility.

trump administration just proposed monitering disabled peoples social media accounts to decide if theyre having too much fun. they will use any pictures where you look just a little too happy to strip you of disability benefits. i wish i was joking but google it for yourself if you dont believe me.
the most depressing part of this is it fundamentally misunderstands how disability manifests. someone who canāt stand up 12 hours a day can go on a 20 minute walk and take a happy picture.
if the bill should pass this 20 minute walk with a commemorative picture could lose you your livlihood.
our government in the usa are straight up trying to say disabled people should never be happy or engage with the workd around us.

It already happens, but once itās clearly stated in law it can become much more difficult to avoid. It would sanction the use of ways to discover social media accounts that donāt use your actual name (which is how I post about good days now) using who knows what methods. Itās honestly as brutally anti-privacy as the Patriot Act was/is. And, just like the Patriot Act, it encourages people to out others. Imagine those people who sneer if you get out of your chair or can go without a cane one dayāimagine those people snitching on you. imho, itās not necessarily that on paper things have changed, but that the act of putting it in writing that changes attitudes.

Iām incredibly fortunate to be a self-diagnosed adult who never had to face ABA therapy, because just watching the videos in this article and reading the guidelines has me in actual tears and sick with rage. Maybe you canāt see it if youāre not autistic, but they treat these children in a way I would never even treat a dog. They treat them like things, like inconvenient problems to be solved, not human beings.
Why do they do that? Because the founder of ABA therapy said, āOne way to look at the job of helping autistic kids is you have to construct a person. You have the raw materials but you have to build the person.ā
ABA therapy is founded on the belief that autistics are not human beings. That our needs and our feelings donāt matter, the only thing that matters is forcing us into the shape of aĀ ārealā person, no matter what kind of damage or trauma it causes.Ā
Please understand that autistic people behave the way we do for a reason. Because weāre overwhelmed, or upset, or in pain, or tired, or confused. Forcing the behavior to change doesnāt change the feelings, it just teaches a child that their feelings donāt matter and they have to suppress them in order to be good. Please value an autistic personās needs over the appearance of normalcy. Please treat autistic children like human beings.

As a victim of ABA Therapy, this hit HARD. Itās EXACTLY why Iām so messed up. This is why Iām so submissive and worried about pleasing other people, especially those I love because I fear of losing love. They taught my mom to withdraw affection when Iām ābadā.

I know it is a lot to read, but this is really important. I have heard that ABA is bad from autistic people and I believed them, because I assume they know their experiences, but I didnāt know why. Watching the videos I thought it was weird behaviour but I didnāt understand why it was abusive until it was spelled out for me. Because Iām allistic and I donāt naturally understand.
