Grammy 2016 Predictions - Record Of The Year
Record of the Year –
Nominees:
D’Angelo and the Vanguard – Really Love
Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars – Uptown Funk
Ed Sheeran – Thinking Out Loud
Taylor Swift – Blank Space
The Weeknd – Can’t Feel My Face
Who should win?
For me, this is a hugely strong category for Record of the Year. Up for the gong are four of the biggest singles of the past 18 months, alongside D’Angelo’s soulful ‘Really Love’ which stands out as a favourite purely because it’s an industry expert voted award. However, if it were down to me, the winner would be Taylor Swift with ‘Blank Space. Lifted from Swift’s first full on pop album, Blank Space tells the tale of how the world’s media have perceived her love life to be. In the track, Swift portrays herself to be ‘an overly attached man-eater who dates for songwriting material’. Released at the end of 2014, Blank Space has remained a huge electropop anthem and definitely is one of 1989’s best tracks. This award should belong to Taylor.
Who will win?
This is where it all gets tricky. ‘Blank Space’ solidified Swift’s status as an international megastar and received mass critical acclaim, is it really the best received work of the category? Potentially not.
Mark Ronson and Bruno Mar’s now legendary track ‘Uptown Funk’ received widespread acclaim from both the general public and music industry experts. The track brought funk music right into the 21st century and led the way for artists such as Fleur East, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Olly Murs to find success with the same genre of music. Also, the track was the biggest selling single worldwide in 2015, and it’s video is the fourth most watched on YouTube to date.
Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’ came as a bit of a sleeper hit from smash hit album ‘X’. In the UK, the track reached the top of the charts in it’s nineteenth week in the top 40, making it the longest climb to number one in UK chart history. In the US, the track became Sheeran’s most successful to date. And of course, it is likely to be a staple at weddings for many years to come.
The Weeknd really emerged as a music powerhouse in 2015, and one of the tracks that helped him was ‘Can’t Feel My Face’. Clearly inspired by the works of the late, great Michael Jackson, the track sounds like the likes of ‘Billie Jean’ and Dirty Diana’ due to it’s similar disco-funk genre. The song is full of infectious hooks, explaining why it hit the top of the charts in the US and Canada. Finally, both Rolling Stones and Billboard magazine named the track the best of 2015.
And then there’s the dark horse. D’Angelo returned to the music industry in 2014 after a turbulent 14 years. The album ‘Black Messiah’ received critical acclaim from all corners of the world. Lead single ‘Really Love’ received equal praise, with many citing his much missed soulful vocals as to why the track was so great.
At an award ceremony which can surprise many at times, you have to ask if D’Angelo can possibly win this year’s award. I think it’s a strong contender, however I think I can see who will reign victorious in this category. So don’t be too shocked when The Weeknd takes home this gong for ‘Can’t Feel My Face’.
