hrrnngg thinking about the split soul thing again and oh man. oh man. imagine. au where after Memory World both Yugi and Atem are granted the memories of being Atem 3,000 years ago up until the moment he was sealed away. maybe Yugi doesn't say anything because he's a little preoccupied with other things and hey, they share a mind and body still, so it makes sense he might have access to Atem's memories just like Yugi gave him his. don't worry about it, he needs to focus on helping Atem be at rest.

and then Atem LEAVES.

and the memories are still there.

and Yugi is lost, reeling, confused, trying to make sense of it all. at first he worries something's gone wrong, what if he's taken some of Atem's memories and he's incomplete over there in the afterlife? but no, that can't be, he never lost memories just because he shared them with Yami.

and then he just feels tormented, because he misses Atem and now he has to carry not only the memories of their time spent together but also who Atem was before Yugi. the personhood and life he sacrificed — the exact weight of what leaving Yugi was worth. this is what he left him for.

and at some point he begins to realize these memories feel familiar in a way they shouldn't. he wonders if this is just his mind and heart overcompensating for missing Atem and wanting to feel like they're connected again, but eventually he can't deny that it feels like these are his memories just as much as Atem's. and maybe he speaks with others, the Ishtars or his friends or someone else, and they bring up the idea that they are the same soul, and he has to confront the fact that not only are these his partner's memories, they are his too. that he, too, is Atem.

and he doesn't know what that means now, how to be Yugi and Atem all at once, how to process these memories of a time and place that somehow still feel unfamiliar but Atem would be able to help explain, and he has to navigate all of this without his partner here. he is alone. his partner only exists in his memories in two ways now. and he just wants him back, wants him to be here to tell him how to get through this, how to feel about having this other personhood that feels familiar yet painfully and terrifyingly unknown. this identity and life that they should be sharing but they are ripped apart once again.

he wonders if Atem is out there feeling incomplete all over again.
