All God’s enemies shall perish, not that they cease to exist, but cease to be enemies.
—St Jerome, commenting on Micah 5:7-14.

where’s the body of christ?
Return of the Holy Women - Henry Ossawa Tanner
Whenever someone says something like "what is this unbiblical nonsense?," on posts about deep thinking, I realize more and more why "Christianity" has so many problems. Christianity is not about just flipping through pages and calling it a day. Do people really think an omnipresent being would be limited to a book? Yes, the Bible is very important in Christianity, but it doesn't mean that things outside of the Bible don't count.
The definition given to mysticism is as states, "In philosophy, Mysticism is either a religious tendency and desire of the human soul towards an intimate union with the Divinity, or a system growing out of such a tendency and desire." What is crazy to me is that there are Christians who fear this. They believe a relationship with God needs to be a copy and paste of every verse. It's not even a religion at that point, it's some performative system. They don't want union, they want to put on a show. They freak out about their "flesh," but don't realize that they are abandoning the very soul that God created.
So when they see that Christianity doesn't have to be people pleasing and limited, that it can be soul searching instead of total abandonment, full of symbolism, and connecting with the world around them they get scared. They call it "unbiblical" or "demonic."
Mystics are the ones who become saints. They find God in and beyond the pages.
Do you think Judas’s betrayal was an act of faith? Judas, who was pragmatic, who was trusted to handle their money, who made sure their resources could be spent wisely. Judas, whose sin had always been being too pragmatic and forgetting to leave room for the miraculous? Do you think Judas entered the city behind the donkey and thought “Something miraculous is going to happen.” Do you think he heard about the bounty and thought “Jesus has humiliated and outsmarted the Pharisees every other time they’ve tried to trap him. I’ll turn him in for the money and he will escape and think of how many things we can do with that silver.” ? Do you think his horror was just remorse, or recognizing a miscalculation?
Right. So during Holy Week we are being prevented from holding Palm Sunday mass for the first time in 500+ years. Cool. Source
It seems that because of this Pizzaballa instead led the group to the hill where Jesus wept over Jerusalem and did mass there. Very apropos.
Yes, he and a select number of bishops and priests held a mass overlooking the Holy City, covering the city with the Holy Cross in the same place Jesus wept, which is heartbreaking but apt. Source.
SAY TO THE DAUGHTER OF ZION
Behold, your King is coming to you,
humble, and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt, the beast of burden.
— Matthew 21:5

One thing I find revolutionary about Jesus is the commandment to love your neighbor. Yes even your MAGA neighbor. Doesn’t mean you let them walk all over you, but they still deserve to eat food, have shelter.
Saying “everyone deserves to eat, yes even that person” reaaaaally pissed a lot of people off.

Sarah Heveron-Smith regarding Duane Michals' 'Christ in New York' series:
"Michals’ use of the figure of Christ in this series, as a symbol of purity, sacrifice, and innocence, makes the violence he is juxtaposed next to all the more shocking. [...] Christ in New York is a series born out of Michals’ anger around the hot-topic issues of the 1980s, most of which are still relevant today. Michals, a gay man, grew up in an intensely religious Catholic community, where he says being gay was not recognized as an option. By recontextualizing the figure of Christ as someone who defends homosexuals and cries over the dead bodies of women who have had illegal abortions, Michals is making a clear political statement against the hypocrisy of some Christian communities, while forcefully reminding us of the pervasive acts of violence in the modern world."
