Made a comment expressing that I do believe transfems about their experiences, and I simply ask the same respect be returned for transmascs when we talk about our lives. I got attacked for being a pedophile (my bio says adult, my boyfriend’s says 17) and when I clarified that I’m 18 and only seven months older than him, I was just attacked further for defending pedophiles with technicalities. Whenever my friends pointed out the ad hominem attack to divert from the simple request that people listen to us and provided evidence that trans men are uniquely and brutally oppressed, they were blocked. Other posts OP made at the same time talked about how what an easy target I was for believing her, and essentially holding me and my distress up as evidence that ad hominem attacks can derail a conversation about something you don’t want to acknowledge, and how all this was somehow flipping the script on transmascs about ISFF. I was blocked when I responded to those posts, being upset that I was being held up as an example of transmasculine behavior. For being upset that I was being irrationally attacked when I asked just want trans women to believe me the way I believe them.

You Have to show the same level of respect and compassion that you show to people who are dysphoric/grieve over their inability to get pregnant to people who are dysphoric/grieve over their unwanted ability to get pregnant, btw. You simply Have To. It’s non-negotiable, especially in a world that physically and often violently prevents the latter group from exercising their right to bodily autonomy and removing unwanted parts of themselves.

You Have to show the same level of passion and interest that you show to future technologies and treatments that will allow people who can’t get pregnant to finally do so to future technologies and treatments that will allow people who can’t impregnate others to finally do so, btw. You simply Have To. One is not more worthy/morally virtuous than the other, one is not an easier burden to bear for those dysphoric about their current anatomy. Gentrification creates a stifling homogeneity in urban areas that makes it less suited for the everyday lives of the lower class and more suited towards the leisure and tourism of those with expendable income.

An old, decrepit laundromat gets replaced by an upscale bakery? And people are mad? It’s not that the poor hate organic vegan cupcakes, it’s that most of us don’t have a way to do laundry in our own home.

Run-down corner stores replaced by hand-made designer clothing boutiques? We don’t hate your eco-fabric shawl, but I can’t eat that for dinner after work like I could have a can of beans I grabbed from that corner store when I don’t have time to take the bus to the real grocery store after work.

What gentrification brings in and of itself is not typically bad, it’s that gentrification brings institutions of leisure and pleasure and makes it so that the poor have to go farther out of their way for basic necessities. It turns low-income living spaces into local tourist attractions. It can even create food deserts by putting restaurants, grocery stores, etc. in that the majority of the lower class cannot afford.

Imagine if someone totally renovated your house and turned it into a mini theme park - they took away your sleeping space, where you prepare food, where you clean yourself and get ready for your day, and replaced it with things that will please people who are visiting, who have their own homes they can go back to, who are here not for their entire life but just as a distraction from their otherwise mundane existence. It’s not that you hate theme parks, it’s not like you’ve never been to a theme park and vow to never visit one again. It’s just that you need to live! To survive! And the leisure of those who have more than you should not invalidate your existence.

I am glad this has made the rounds. Some people feel a dense misunderstanding or misinterpretation concerning gentrification, and I think it helps to hear a description/explanation of what gentrification is from those who are both affected by it and educated by the culture from which it hails. I and many others enjoy some of the delights of gentrification while simultaneously having their livelihoods threatened by it.

Breaking news, you don’t improve a neighborhood by taking away people’s social safety nets, the stores they shop in, the people they recognize. You don’t improve neighborhoods by gentrification.

You DO improve neighborhoods by giving the people there healthcare. You improve them by making sure their infrastructure is up to date. You improve them by helping new neighbors find safety and comfort. You improve them by making sure neighborhood institutions like the corner store, the laundromat, etc, stay there.

The capitalist class wants you to believe that just because you got a Starbucks or a Dutchies and some Whole Foods, your neighborhood is improved. This must be something we reject in every possible form.
