Sorry I don't know how to put this underwater but my notifications are now full of replies like the one screenshotted and I feel like I'm going insane. How is this not just full on naked transphobia. These guys rhetorically categorize themselves as False Men and don't see any problem with it ??? I know this isn't new but I just don't even understand how the appeal of placing yourself in an Ontologically Innocent Category outweighs the dysphoria you would think this would cause.

I'm now being informed by transandrophobia truthers that trans men rarely pass and are never ever seen as real men. Honestly at this point if it weren't for how strongly it resembles other MRA movements that are obsessed with biological determinism, I would suspect the whole thing to be a psyop intended to try and convince trans men to give up hope for transitioning and kill themselves. in a feminist context, "gender" has historically referred to externally imposed categorization and the internalization and performance of said categories. in a paper I wrote on this subject, I called this sense of the word "extrinsic gender"

"intrinsic gender," on the other hand, is what I used to refer to the sense of the word "gender" that a lot of trans people are talking about when they discuss social gender dysphoria and euphoria. it's the internal sense of category that's resistant to external impositions

but then we also use the word "gender" to refer to subconscious sex, which is the term Julia Serano coins in Whipping Girl to name the phenomenon we're talking about when we talk about bodily dysphoria. it is the "gender" being "affirmed" by gender affirming healthcare like HRT and bottom surgery

so, "gender" is: a social classing system, a performance, and at least two internal phenomena as well. and I really don't know if it's doing us a service to conflate all of these things!

a lot of people lately seem to be going heavy on the "performance" use of the word, ignoring (intentionally or otherwise) social classing, intrinsic gender, and subconscious sex. this seems to have led to a lot of "progressive" people treating trans women like men "amabs" who wear womanhood as a costume, and nobody understands why that's wrong because they also think gender is just a performance

And I think its relevant that people always misunderstand Judith Butler's intent with casting gender as "performative". They meant it in the philosophical sense, a social concept that can only exist through the actions of a social agent. You "perform gender" the same way you "perform tasks". Gender doesn't just exist, it must be created through actions. Society incentives certain actions to be performed in order to construct the gender binary, and if you do not perform those actions in the correct combination it disrupts the binary cohesion of gender as a social construct. But the gender binary as a social construct that can be dismantled doesn't naturally disprove subconcious sex.

Most people instead have a moralizing definition of it as a performance in the sense of an actor or a liar, something that isn't real because its done to convince someone of something completely false. This ends up rewarding people who treat gender as meaningless and silly like cis people who "dont care" about gender, or GNC TME celebrities and drag performers, or gender abolitionist transphobes, and punishes anyone who has an unacceptable investment in their subconcious sex and the way they are treated by others. Aka trans people. And of course trans women are opened to hyper-scrutiny in this framing since womanhood is treated as the most "performative" gender.

If youre a closeted person somewhere out there thinking "I want to transition but it would be less progressive/unique/countercultural for me to be that gender instead of this one" please know that you are a real person not a character in a narrative and cant live your life based on what is good media representation. You are real you can only be yourself and theres no moral weight to any identity over another

Liberal transphobes enjoy positioning trans identities as regressive compared to cis queerness or like non-transitioning transness or anything else they can leverage to make transphobia look progressive and I think its easy to absorb that message subconciously. But in real life we just are what we are and no ranking of validity can change the fact that you have an identity that is NOT chosen and is just your unchangeable truth. Not only should you not have to live a life dictated by what is most countercultural to identify as or whatever but also: being trans is extremely countercultural and feminist and leftist to begin with and theyre only trying to convince you otherwise bc theyre bigots

^^^ i spent all night and yesterday compiling information about a "phantom report bug", where people are getting emails from tumblr support about TOS reports they did not file. pjackk was banned off one of these phantom reports, i told tumblr support about it, and now he's unbanned. i think @garaks-padded-bra was also banned erroneously off a phantom report, so hopefully that will get reversed soon as well

PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAIL FOR PHANTOM REPORT EMAILS. if you spot any, even if theyre old, tell me about them so i can add them to the list (linked above), and report them to tumblr support. POLITELY. tumblr support wants to fix this.
